Abstract

An intelligent power allocation architecture for a processor. For example, one embodiment of a processor comprises: a plurality of processor components for performing a corresponding plurality of processor functions; a plurality of power planes, each power plane associated with one of the processor components; and a power control unit (PCU) to dynamically adjust power to each of the power planes based on user experience metrics, workload characteristics, and power constraints for a current use of the processor.

a plurality of processor components for performing a corresponding plurality of processor functions;

a plurality of power planes, each power plane associated with one of the processor components; and

a power control unit (PCU) to dynamically adjust power to each of the power planes based on processing requirements of a device in which the processor is used, workload characteristics, power constraints, and thermal constraints for a current use of the processor, wherein the power constraints comprise a specified power budget, the PCU to ensure that the combined power used by the power planes does not exceed the specified power budget when dynamically adjusting power to each of the power planes, and wherein the thermal constraints comprise a specific thermal budget for each one of the processor components, the PCU to ensure that the power used by each power plane does not cause the temperature of the associated processor component to exceed the specific thermal budget of the associated processor component when dynamically adjusting power to each of the power planes.

2. The processor as in claim 1 employed using a system on a chip (SoC) architecture.

3. The processor as in claim 1 wherein the plurality of processor components include a memory component, an interconnect and/or cache component, a graphics component, and a general purpose processing component.

4. The processor as in claim 1 wherein each of the power planes comprises an independently modifiable frequency and voltage level for adjusting power.

5. The processor as in claim 4 wherein the PCU adjusts power to a power plane by adjusting an operational frequency for the processor component associated with that power plane.

6. The processor as in claim 1 wherein the device is selected from a group consisting of: a set-top box; a general purpose computer system; a tablet computer; or a smartphone device.

7. The processor as in claim 1 wherein the PCU is to continually monitor the workload characteristics for processes executed on the processor and to dynamically adjust the power to each of the power planes based on the workload characteristics.

8. The processor as in claim 7 wherein the PCU is to increase power to a graphics plane in response to detecting workload characteristics indicating that graphics commands need to be executed at a particular rate for an acceptable user experience.

9. The processor as in claim 8 wherein PCU is to increase power to an interconnect plane in response to detecting workload characteristics indicating that video images need to be displayed at a particular rate for an acceptable user experience.

10. The processor as in claim 1 wherein the power constraints comprise a maximum total power to be consumed by all of the power planes at a given instant in time.

11. The processor as in claim 10 wherein the PCU is to dynamically modify the power provided to the power planes in view of the power constraints while maintaining an acceptable user experience as specified by a set of user experience metrics.

12. The processor as in claim 1 wherein the PCU is to dynamically adjust power to each of the power planes based additionally on current detected external conditions in which a system in which the processor is being used is operating.

13. The processor as in claim 12 wherein the external conditions include an indication as to a power source for the system.

14. The processor as in claim 13 wherein the external conditions include an indication as to whether the system is running on AC power or battery power.

15. The processor as in claim 14 wherein the external conditions include an indication of a current level of the battery power.

16. The processor as in claim 1 wherein each of the processor components are to request power from the PCU and wherein the PCU is to responsively allocate power to the requesting processor components while still maintaining overall power consumption within the power constraints.

17. A method comprising:

defining a set of user experience metrics, power constraints, and thermal constrains for a particular use of a processor, the processor having a plurality of processor components for performing a corresponding plurality of processor functions, each of the processor components associated with a particular power plane; and

dynamically adjusting power to each of the power planes based on processing requirements of a device in which the processor is used, workload characteristics, power constraints, and thermal constraints for the particular use of the processor, wherein the power constraints comprise a specified power budget, a power control unit (PCU) of the processor to ensure that the combined power used by the power planes does not exceed the specified power budget when dynamically adjusting power to each of the power planes, and wherein the thermal constraints comprise a specific thermal budget for each one of the processor components, the PCU of the processor to ensure that the power used by each power plane does not cause the temperature of the associated processor component to exceed the specific thermal budget of the associated processor component when dynamically adjusting power to each of the power planes.

18. The method as in claim 17 employed using a system on a chip (SoC) architecture.

19. The method as in claim 17 wherein the plurality of processor components include a memory component, an interconnect and/or cache component, a graphics component, and a general purpose processing component.

20. The method as in claim 17 wherein each of the power planes comprises an independently modifiable frequency and voltage level for adjusting power.

21. The method as in claim 20 wherein the power us adjusted to a power plane by adjusting an operational frequency for the processor component associated with that power plane.
