Abstract

Systems and methods for initiating a drill by receiving an indication to start a drill. Initiating the drill also includes verifying that a remote device used to initiate the drill is within proximity of a device used to propagate the drill. Once proximity is verified, the drill is conducted.

Claims (38)

1. A method for conducting a drill comprising:

receiving, at an electronic device, an indication to conduct a drill;

sending, from the electronic device, a drill command to a remote device to be used conducting the drill;

indicating, via the electronic device, that the drill is being conducted using at least one hazard detector and at least one thermostat; and

sending, via the electronic device, an indication to cause verification of proximity of the electronic device to the remote device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote device comprises a hazard detector of the at least one hazard detector or a thermostat of the at least one thermostat.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the indication comprises receiving scheduled drill data that indicates that the drill is to be conducted in the future.

4. The method of claim 3 , causing the scheduled drill data to be stored in one of the at least one hazard detector or the at least one thermostat.

5. The method of claim 3 , comprising:

determining a level of occupancy for a location to be drilled; and

varying timing of a scheduled drill when the level of occupancy is not greater that a threshold of occupancy for a location being drilled.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining the level of occupancy comprises determining proximity of the electronic device and delaying the scheduled drill until proximity is determined.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising using additional smart devices in a smart network comprising the at least one hazard detector and at least one thermostat to assist in conducting the drill.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending the indication to cause verification of proximity comprises instructing a user to physically touch the remote device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device and the remote device connect via a wireless connection, and verifying proximity comprises determining whether the electronic device and the remote device are on the same wireless network.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device and the remote device connect via a wireless connection, and verifying proximity comprises determining whether a signal strength of a communication between the electronic device and the remote device or a wireless router exceeds a threshold strength.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device and the remote device connect via a wireless connection, and verifying proximity comprises verifying that an auditory or visual signal is transmitted at the electronic device and detected at the remote device or verifying that the auditory or visual signal is transmitted by the remote device and detected at the electronic device.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the auditory or visual signal comprises a hypersonic signal or an infrared signal.

13. An electronic device comprising:

a processor; and

memory storing instructions, that when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receiving, from a remote device, an indication to conduct a drill;

verifying proximity of the electronic device to the remote device; and

sending, to one or more network devices, a drill command to initiate a drill.

14. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the instructions are configured to cause the processor to light a path to an exit using the one or more network devices during the drill.

15. The electronic device of claim 13 , wherein the one or more network devices comprises devices wireless connected to the electronic device and to be used in the drill.

16. The electronic device of claim 15 , wherein the one or more network devices comprises a thermostat or a light bulb.

17. An electronic device comprising:

an input interface;

a processor; and

memory storing instructions, that when executed, are configured to cause the processor to:

receive, via the input interface, an indication to initiate a drill;

connect to a remote device;

determine whether the remote device is within a threshold proximity of the electronic device; and

if the remote device is within the threshold proximity of the electronic device, cause the remote device to initiate the drill.

The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein receiving the indication to initiate the drill comprises receiving an indication of a drill type; and causing the remote device to initiate the drill includes instructions for implementing drill-type specific rules based at least in part on the received indication of the drill type.

19. The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein the instructions are configured to cause the processor to present diagnostic information for network devices used to conduct the drill.

20. The electronic device of claim 18 , wherein the instructions are configured to cause the processor to receive an update to behaviors for one or more of the network devices.
