Abstract

A surgical implant includes at least two porous film layers each having a plurality of pores. The porous film layers are in a stacked configuration and are interconnected to one another at a plurality of attachment points to define at least one void between the porous film layers.

Claims (26)

1. A surgical implant, comprising:

a first porous film layer including a plurality of pores, and having a first degree of porosity and a first modulus of elasticity;

a second porous film layer including a plurality of pores, and having a second degree of porosity that is different from the first degree of porosity and a second modulus of elasticity; and

a third porous film layer including a plurality of pores, and having a third modulus of elasticity that is greater than the first and second moduli of elasticity of the first and second porous film layers to reinforce the surgical implant,

the first, second, and third porous film layers being in a stacked configuration with the third porous film layer interposed between the first and second porous film layers, the first, second, and third porous film layers bonded to one another at a plurality of attachment points to define a plurality of separate discrete pockets between the first and third porous film layers and the second and third porous film layers, wherein the attachment points form a boundary around each of the plurality of separate discrete pockets, and the plurality of separate discrete pockets have at least a portion of the plurality of pores of the first or second porous film layers disposed within the boundary.

2. The surgical implant of claim 1 , wherein each of the first porous film layer and the second porous film layer is fabricated from at least one of a biodegradable material, a non-degradable material, or combinations thereof.

3. The surgical implant of claim 1 , wherein each of the first, the second, and the third porous film layers is substantially planar.

4. The surgical implant of claim 1 , further comprising a filler material disposed within at least one of the plurality of separate discrete pockets, and at least one of the plurality of pores of the first and second porous film layers.

5. The surgical implant of claim 4 , wherein the filler material comprises a drug.

6. The surgical implant of claim 4 , wherein the filler material is a hydrogel.

7. The surgical implant of claim 1 , wherein the first porous film layer has a first thickness and the second porous film layer has a second thickness that is different from the first thickness.

8. The surgical implant of claim 1 , wherein the second modulus of elasticity is different from the first modulus of elasticity.

9. The surgical implant of claim 1 , wherein molecules of the first porous film layer are uniaxially oriented in a first direction and molecules of the second porous film layer are uniaxially oriented in a second direction that is different from the first direction.

10. The surgical implant of claim 1 , further comprising an adhesion barrier layer applied to an outer surface of at least one of the first or second porous film layers.

11. The surgical implant of claim 1 , further comprising an adhesive layer applied to an outer surface of at least one of the first or second porous film layers.

12. The surgical implant of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of attachment points between the first and third porous film layers is different from one of the plurality of attachment points between the second and third porous film layers such that at least one of the plurality of separate discrete pockets defined between the first and third porous film layers is different in size from at least one of the plurality of separate discrete pockets defined between the second and third porous film layers.

13. The surgical implant of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of pores of the first porous film layer are liquid-permeable pores, and the plurality of pores of the second porous film layer are gas-permeable, liquid-impermeable pores.

14. A surgical implant comprising:

three porous substrates in a layered configuration, the three porous substrates being bonded by a plurality of spaced attachment points forming a boundary and defining a plurality of separate discrete pockets between successive layers of the three porous substrates, wherein a plurality of discrete pores are provided within the boundary, and the three porous substrates include a first porous substrate, a second porous substrate, and a third porous substrate interposed between the first and second porous substrates, wherein at least one of the plurality of spaced attachment points between the first and the third porous substrates is different from one of the plurality of spaced attachment points between the second and the third porous substrates such that at least one of the plurality of separate discrete pockets defined between the first and third substrates is different in size from the at least one of the plurality of separate discrete pockets defined between the second and third porous substrates; and

an adhesion barrier layer applied to an outer surface of the first porous substrate or the second porous substrate.

15. The surgical implant of claim 14 , wherein each porous substrate of the three porous substrates is formed entirely from a film.

16. The surgical implant of claim 14 , wherein the surgical implant is a surgical buttress.

17. The surgical implant of claim 14 , wherein the surgical implant is a hernia repair device.

18. The surgical implant of claim 14 , wherein the surgical implant is a scaffold.

19. The surgical implant of claim 14 , wherein the surgical implant is a tissue sealant patch.

20. The surgical implant of claim 14 , wherein each of the three porous substrates is substantially planar.
