Abstract

A method and apparatus for controlling operation of an electro-optic modulator is disclosed. A first intensity of light is obtained at an input to the electro-optic modulator. A second intensity of light is obtained at an output of the electro-optic modulator. A difference between the obtained first intensity and the obtained second intensity is used to control a biasing of a modulator transfer function of the electro-optic modulator to control the electro-optic modulator.

Claims (13)

1. An apparatus for controlling operation of an electro-optic modulator, comprising:

a first optical tap configured to tap input light that is input to the electro-optic modulator;

a second optical tap configured to tap output light that is output from the electro-optic modulator, wherein the electro-optic modulator includes two coupled optical waveguides for producing the output light from the input light; and

a circuit configured to generate a control signal for heating one of the two coupled optical waveguides to control a bias point of operation on a modulator transfer function of the electro-optic modulator that relates an intensity of light at the output of the electro-optic modulator to a wavelength, wherein the control signal is based on a difference between an intensity of the input light and an intensity of the output light.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control signal is configured to control operation of a heating element coupled to the one of the two coupled optical waveguides to control the bias of the modulator transfer function.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the circuit includes a differential amplifier that drives the heating element based on the difference.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the heating element is configured to change an optical path length of the one of the two coupled optical waveguides of the electro-optic modulator.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuit heats the one of the two coupled optical waveguides to move the modulator transfer function so that a wavelength of a laser providing of the input light is at a selected bias point.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuit is further configured to convert an intensity of the tapped input light to a first voltage input to an operational amplifier and convert an intensity of the tapped output light to a second voltage input to the operational amplifier, wherein the difference between the first voltage input and the second voltage input drive the operational amplifier to provide the control signal for controlling the modulator transfer function.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first optical tap taps a first percentage of light at the input to the electro-optic modulator and second optical tap taps a second percentage of light at the output by the electro-optic modulator, wherein the first percentage and the second percentage are selected so that the first percentage of the input light is substantially equal to the second percentage of the output light when the electro-optic modulator is properly biased.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electro-optic modulator is one of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a ring resonator modulator.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light at the input to the electro-optic modulator is a continuous wave laser light.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light at the output alternates between a ‘0’ state and a ‘1’ state and the circuit is configured to respond to an average intensity of the tapped output light over a time period to reduce the effect of alternation of the output light on the tapped output light over a time period.
