Abstract

A gastrointestinal device and method for inserting the device are disclosed. The device may include a stent including a plurality of strands. The stent may move between an insertion configuration, wherein the plurality of strands are substantially parallel, and a deployed configuration, wherein the plurality of strands form a proximal portion having a first diameter and a distal portion having a second diameter. The first and second diameters may be larger than a diameter of the pyloric sphincter. The device may include a connector assembly including proximal and distal connectors attached to the strands. A cable including an engagement portion may be configured to releasably couple to the distal connector and to cause the strands to move from the insertion configuration to the deployed configuration when the engagement portion is coupled to the distal connector and force is applied to the cable in a direction toward the proximal connector.

a connector assembly including a proximal connector and a distal connector, the plurality of strands being attached at the first end to the proximal connector and at the second end to the distal connector;

a cable including an engagement portion configured to releasably couple to the distal connector, the cable configured to cause the plurality of strands to move from the insertion configuration to the deployed configuration when the engagement portion is coupled to the distal connector and a force is applied to the cable in a direction toward the proximal connector.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the connector assembly further comprises a middle connector coupled to the proximal connector, the middle connector configured to couple to the distal connector when the force is applied to the cable in a direction toward the proximal connector.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the middle connector includes at least one projection extending towards the distal connector and the distal connector includes a flange, the at least one projection including a snap fit element configured to engage the flange on the distal connector and lock the middle connector to the distal connector when the force is applied to the cable in a direction toward the proximal connector.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the cable is configured to release from the distal connector after the plurality of strands moves from the insertion configuration to the deployed configuration.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the engagement portion of the cable is threaded and is configured to releasably couple to a threaded portion of the distal connector.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the threaded engagement portion of the cable is configured to be unscrewed from the distal connector after the plurality of strands moves from the insertion configuration to the deployed configuration.

7. The device of claim 1 further comprising a sleeve attached to the distal connector and configured to move from a condensed configuration when the plurality of strands is in the insertion configuration to an expanded configuration after the plurality of strands is in the deployed configuration, the sleeve configured to extend into a duodenum of the patient and to receive partially digested food from a lumen defined in the connector assembly in the expanded configuration.

8. The device of claim 7 further comprising a release wire configured to cause the sleeve to move from the condensed configuration to the expanded configuration when actuated.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal connector defines a passage therethrough and the cable is configured to extend through the passage to releasably couple to the distal connector.

10. The device of claim 2 , wherein the proximal connector and the middle connector each define a passage therethrough and the cable is configured to extend through the passages in the proximal and middle connectors to releasably couple to the distal connector.

11. A method of deploying a gastrointestinal device for reducing flow through a pyloric sphincter of a patient, the method comprising:

inserting a device including a stent having a plurality of strands into a sheath while the plurality of strands are substantially parallel to each other;

positioning the device in the pyloric sphincter of the patient;

removing the sheath from around the device;

exerting a force in a proximal direction on a cable coupled to a distal connector of the device to cause the plurality of strands to form a first portion proximal to the pyloric sphincter and having a first diameter and a second portion distal to the pyloric sphincter and having a second diameter, wherein the first and second diameters are larger than a diameter of the pyloric sphincter;

locking the first and second portions in place to anchor the device in the pyloric sphincter; and

decoupling the cable from the distal connector and removing it from the patient.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the locking step includes coupling a proximal connector and a middle connector to the distal connector.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the middle connector includes at least one projection extending towards the distal connector, the at least one projection includes a snap fit element and the distal connector includes a flange, the locking step including exerting a force in a proximal direction on the cable to cause the snap fit element to engage the flange.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein decoupling the cable from the distal connector includes unscrewing the cable from a threaded connection between the cable and the distal connector.

15. The method of claim 11 further comprising releasing a sleeve connected to the distal connector into the duodenum.

16. The method of 15 , wherein releasing the sleeve includes pulling a release wire.

17. A gastrointestinal device for reducing flow through a pyloric sphincter of a patient, comprising:

a stent including a plurality of strands, the plurality of strands forming first and seconds ends and configured to move between an insertion configuration, wherein the plurality of strands are substantially parallel, and a deployed configuration, wherein the plurality of strands form a proximal portion having a first diameter and a distal portion having a second diameter, the first and second diameters being larger than a diameter of the pyloric sphincter;

a connector assembly including a proximal connector, a middle connector, and a distal connector, the plurality of strands being attached at the first end to the proximal connector and at the second end to the distal connector;

the middle connector coupled to the proximal connector and including at least one projection extending towards the distal connector, the at least one projection including a stop and a ramp;

the distal connector including a flange;

a cable including an engagement portion configured to releasably couple to the distal connector, the cable configured to cause the plurality of strands to move from the insertion configuration to the deployed configuration when the engagement portion is coupled to the distal connector and a force is applied to the cable in a direction toward the proximal connector;

the force applied to the cable further configured to cause the middle connector to move towards the distal connector such that the ramp of the at least one projection engages and slides distal to the flange of the distal connector, the stop configured to engage the flange and prevent proximal movement of the middle connector relative to the distal connector when the ramp is distal to the flange.

18. The device of claim 17 , wherein the engagement portion of the cable is threaded and is configured to releasably couple to a threaded portion of the distal connector and the cable is configured to be unscrewed from the distal connector after the plurality of strands moves from the insertion configuration to the deployed configuration.
