Abstract

In one embodiment, a system for tracking electronic transactions in a network environment includes a network entry point that may receive a transaction request, the transaction request comprising a communications protocol. The network entry point may generate a unique identifier and insert the unique identifier into the transaction request. The network entry point may then communicate the transaction request and the unique identifier to a first network device using the communications protocol. The network entry point may create a first transaction report associated with the transaction request and communicate the first transaction report to a transaction module. The first network device may receive the transaction request and the unique identifier from the network entry point, process the transaction request, create a second transaction report associated with the transaction request; and communicate the second transaction report to the transaction module, the second transaction report comprising the unique identifier.

Claims (57)

1. A system for tracking electronic transactions in a network environment, comprising:

a network entry point, the network entry point operable to:

receive a transaction request, the transaction request comprising a communications protocol;

generate a unique identifier, wherein the unique identifier is a uniform resource locator (URL) safe, alpha-numeric identifier;

insert the unique identifier into a header of the transaction request;

communicate the transaction request and the unique identifier to a first network device using the communications protocol;

create a first transaction report associated with the transaction request, wherein the first transaction report comprises information describing how the network entry point processed the transaction request; and

communicate the first transaction report to a transaction module, the first transaction report comprising the unique identifier; and

the first network device operable to:

receive the transaction request and the unique identifier from the network entry point;

process the transaction request;

create a second transaction report associated with the transaction request, wherein the second transaction report comprises information describing the process conducted by the first network device; and

communicate the second transaction report to the transaction module, the second transaction report comprising the unique identifier.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transaction module further comprises:

an interface operable to:

receive the first transaction report from the network entry point and the second transaction report from the first network device;

a processor communicatively coupled to the interface, the processor operable to:

aggregate the first and second transaction reports using the unique identifier; and

generate a transaction flow report based on the first and second transaction reports, wherein the transaction flow report comprises a list of each of the plurality of network devices processing the transaction request.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein second transaction report comprises a status field indicating that that first network device failed to process the transaction request; and

the transaction module is further operable to communicate a notification message to a network administrator responsible for the first network device, the notification message indicating the failed status field.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the communications protocol is a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP), and the network entry point is operable to insert the unique identifier into the transaction request as a header field of the transaction request.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first network device is a selected one from the group consisting of an application server, and a database.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network entry point 1 s a web server communicating with a web browser.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network entry point is an automatic teller machine (ATM).

8. A method for tracking electronic transactions m a network environment, comprising:

receiving, at a network entry point, a transaction request, the transaction request comprising a communications protocol;

generating, using the network entry point, a unique identifier, wherein the unique identifier is a uniform resource locator (URL) safe, alpha-numeric identifier;

inserting, using the network entry point, the unique identifier into a header of the transaction request;

communicating, using the network entry point, the transaction request and the unique identifier to a first network device using the communications protocol;

creating, using the network entry point, a first transaction report associated with the transaction request, wherein the first transaction report comprises information describing how the network entry point processed the transaction;

communicating, using the network entry point, the first transaction report to a transaction module, the first transaction report comprising the unique identifier;

receiving, using the first network device, the transaction request and the unique identifier from the network entry point;

processing the transaction request using the first network device;

creating, using the first network device, a second transaction report associated with the transaction request, wherein the second transaction report comprises information describing the process conducted by the first network device; and

communicating the second transaction report to the transaction module, the second transaction report comprising the unique identifier.

9. The method of claim 8 , the transaction module comprising:

receiving, using an interface, the first transaction report from the network entry point and the second transaction report from the first network device;

aggregating, using a processor communicatively coupled to the interface, the first and second transaction reports using the unique identifier; and

generating, using the processor, a transaction flow report based on the first and second transaction reports, wherein the transaction flow report comprises a list of each of the plurality of network devices processing the transaction request.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second transaction report comprises a status field indicating that that first network device failed to process the transaction request; and

the method further comprises communicating, using the transaction module, a notification message to a network administrator responsible for the first network device, the notification message indicating the failed status field.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the communications protocol is a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP), and the network entry point is operable to insert the unique identifier into the transaction request as a header field of the transaction request.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first network device is a selected one from the group consisting of an application server and a database.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the network entry point is a web server communicating with a web browser.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the network entry point 1 s an automatic teller machine (ATM).

15. Non-transitory computer readable medium comprising logic, the logic operable, when executed by a processor, to:

receive a first transaction report from a network entry point processing a transaction request using a communications protocol, the first transaction report comprising a unique identifier in a header of the transaction report, wherein the first transaction report comprises information describing how the network entry point processed the transaction request;

receive a second transaction report from a first network device processing the transaction request using the communications protocol, the second transaction report comprising the unique identifier, wherein the second transaction report comprises information describing the process conducted by the first network device;

aggregate the first and second transaction reports using the unique identifier; and

generate a transaction flow report based on the first and second transaction reports, wherein the transaction flow report comprises a list of each of the plurality of network devices processing the transaction request.

16. The non-transitory medium of claim 15 , wherein second transaction report further comprises a status field indicating that that first network device failed to process the transaction request, and the logic is further operable to:

communicate a notification message to a network administrator, the notification message indicating the failed status field.

17. The non-transitory medium of claim 15 , wherein the communications protocol is a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP), and the network entry point is operable to insert the unique identifier into the transaction request as a header field.

18. The non-transitory medium of claim 15 , wherein the first network device 1 s one selected from the group consisting of an application server and a database.

19. The non-transitory medium of claim 15 , wherein the unique identifier is a URL-safe, alpha-numeric header.

20. The non-transitory medium of claim 15 , wherein the network entry point is a selected one from the group consisting of a web server and an automatic teller machine (ATM).
