Abstract

Apparatuses and methods of optically analyzing fluid within a pipette are described herein. In an embodiment, an optical reader subassembly includes a housing including an internal area, a container configured to hold a fluid sample at a sample position in a light tight manner within the internal area of the housing, a light source configured to project light onto the fluid sample within the container, and an optical sensor configured to move between different sensor positions while the fluid sample remains stationary at the sample position, the different sensor positions including at least two of: (i) a first sensor position for taking a luminescence reading of the fluid sample; (ii) a second sensor position for taking a dark current or other background measurement; and (iii) a third sensor position for taking a fluorescence reading of the fluid sample.

Claims (38)

1. An optical reader subassembly comprising:

a housing including an internal area;

a container configured to hold a fluid sample at a sample position in a light tight manner within the internal area of the housing;

a light source configured to project light onto the fluid sample within the container, the light source including a bifurcated fiber optic bundle; and

an optical sensor configured to move between different sensor positions while the fluid sample remains stationary at the sample position, the different sensor positions including at least two of: (i) a first sensor position for taking a luminescence reading of the fluid sample; (ii) a second sensor position for taking a dark current or other background measurement; and (iii) a third sensor position for taking a fluorescence reading of the fluid sample.

2. The optical reader subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the different sensor positions include each of the first sensor position, the second sensor position and the third sensor position.

3. The optical reader subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the optical sensor is attached to a mechanism that moves the optical sensor between the different sensor positions.

4. The optical reader subassembly of claim 3 , wherein the mechanism pivots the optical sensor between the different sensor positions.

5. The optical reader subassembly of claim 3 , wherein the mechanism includes a cam.

The optical reader subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the bifurcated fiber optic bundle includes a first bundle to project the light onto the fluid sample within the container and a second bundle to receive emission light and transmit the emission light to the optical sensor while the optical sensor is in the third reading position.

7. The optical reader subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the container is a pipette.

8. An optical reader subassembly comprising:

a housing including an internal area;

a container configured to hold a fluid sample at a sample position in a light tight manner within the internal area of the housing;

a light source configured to project light onto the fluid sample within the container, the light source including a bifurcated fiber optic bundle; and

at least one optical sensor configured to take both a luminescence reading of the fluid sample and a fluorescence reading of the fluid sample while the fluid sample remains stationary at the sample position.

9. The optical reader subassembly of claim 8 , wherein the at least one optical sensor is configured to move between a first sensor position to take the luminescence reading and a second sensor position to take the fluorescence reading.

10. The optical reader subassembly of claim 8 , wherein the bifurcated fiber optic bundle includes a first bundle to project the light onto the fluid sample within the container and a second bundle to receive emission light and transmit the emission light to the at least one optical sensor.

11. The optical reader subassembly of claim 10 , wherein the emission light is used to take the fluorescence reading of the fluid sample.

12. The optical reader subassembly of claim 8 , wherein the at least one optical sensor is further configured to take a dark current or other background measurement.

13. The optical reader subassembly of claim 12 , wherein the at least one optical sensor is configured to take the dark current or other background measurement while the fluid sample remains stationary at the sample position.

14. The optical reader subassembly of claim 8 , wherein the container is a pipette.

15. A method of optically analyzing a fluid sample, comprising:

placing a fluid sample into a light tight area in proximity to a bifurcated fiber optic bundle and an optical sensor;

projecting light through the bifurcated fiber optic bundle onto the fluid sample;

taking a luminescence reading of the fluid sample with the optical sensor;

moving the optical sensor to a second position; and

taking a fluorescence reading of the fluid sample while the optical sensor is in the second position.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein taking the fluorescence reading includes transmitting an emission light through the bifurcated fiber optic bundle to the optical sensor while the optical sensor is in the second position.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein moving the optical sensor includes pivoting the optical sensor to the second position.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein placing the fluid sample into the light tight area includes lowering a pipette including the fluid sample into the light tight area.

19. The method of claim 15 , which includes moving the optical sensor to a third position to take a dark current or other background measurement.

20. A method of optically analyzing a fluid sample, comprising:

placing a fluid sample into a light tight area in proximity to a light source and an optical sensor;

projecting light from the light source onto the fluid sample;

taking a luminescence reading of the fluid sample with the optical sensor;

moving the optical sensor to a second position; and

transmitting an emission light to the optical sensor through a bifurcated fiber optic bundle to take a fluorescence reading of the fluid sample while the optical sensor is in the second position.
