Abstract

The disclosed embodiments include a method for providing viewing notifications for a set-top box that includes the steps of: storing usage information associated with a media content received by the set-top box, the usage information containing a length of time that the media content was displayed; determining, using a processor, whether a viewing notification is to be sent to a particular user based on user preferences and the usage information; responsive to a determination that the viewing notification is to be sent to the particular user, retrieving a notification identifier associated with the particular user and sending the viewing notification regarding the usage information; receiving a response to the viewing notification from the particular user, wherein the response includes a partial command that is interpreted based on the viewing notification as a requested command to be performed by the set-top box; and performing, using the processor, the requested command.

Claims (58)

1. A method for providing viewing notifications for a set-top box, comprising:

storing usage information associated with a media content received by the set-top box, the usage information containing information, obtained without user input, regarding one or more of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content that have been viewed by a particular user and containing viewing information associated with one or more friends associated with the particular user;

determining whether the particular user has missed viewing at least one of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content based on an analysis of the information regarding the one or more of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content that have been viewed by the particular user and based on the viewing information associated with one or more friends associated with the particular user;

based on a determination, obtained without user input, that the particular user has missed viewing at least one of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content that is based on the analysis of the information regarding the one or more of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content that have been viewed by the particular user and based on the viewing information associated with one or more friends associated with the particular user, storing revised usage information, obtained without user input, associated with the media content, the revised usage information, obtained without user input, containing information regarding at least one of missed episodes, missed movies, or missed series associated with the media that the particular user has not viewed;

determining, using a processor, whether a viewing notification about the media content is to be sent to the particular user based on user preferences, based on the usage information, and based on the revised usage information;

responsive to a determination that the viewing notification is to be sent to the particular user, retrieving a notification identifier associated with the particular user and sending the viewing notification regarding the usage information;

receiving a response to the viewing notification from the particular user, wherein the response includes a partial command that is interpreted based on the viewing notification as a requested command to be performed by the set-top box; and

performing, using the processor, the requested command.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the requested command is to record the media content.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the requested command is to associate the usage information corresponding to the media content received by the set-top box with a user profile of a user of the set-top box.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the requested command is to not retain the usage information corresponding to the media content being received by the set-top box.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification identifier associated with the particular user is to a mobile device of the particular user, and wherein the notification is sent as a text message to the mobile device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising in response to receiving a request to display usage information, generating a calendar interface, and displaying the usage information in the calendar interface.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating content reminder notifications based on usage information associated with a user profile, and automatically inserting the reminder notifications into a calendar application of a user associated with the user profile.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the requested command is to block the displaying of the media content.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining commonly watched media content that is associated with two or more of user profiles in response to a query; and

returning a list of the commonly watched media content associated with the two or more user profiles.

10. A set-top box comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium in communication with the processor, the computer readable medium operable to store a set of instructions, wherein the processor executes the set of instructions to perform operations comprising:

storing usage information associated with a media content received by the set-top box, the usage information containing information, obtained without user input, regarding one or more of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content that have been viewed by a particular user and containing viewing information associated with one or more friends associated with the particular user;

determining whether the particular user has missed viewing at least one of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content based on an analysis of the information regarding the one or more of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content that have been viewed by the particular user and based on the viewing information associated with one or more friends associated with the particular user;

based on a determination, obtained without user input, that the particular user has missed viewing at least one of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content that is based on the analysis of the information, obtained without user input, regarding the one or more of episodes, movies, or series associated with the media content that have been viewed by the particular user and based on the viewing information associated with one or more friends associated with the particular user, storing revised usage information associated with the media content, the revised usage information, obtained without user input, containing information regarding at least one of missed episodes, missed movies, or missed series associated with the media that the particular user has not viewed;

determining, using the processor, whether a viewing notification about the media content is to be sent to the particular user based on user preferences, based on the usage information, and based on the revised usage information;

responsive to a determination that the viewing notification is to be sent to the particular user, retrieving a notification identifier associated with the particular user and sending the viewing notification regarding the usage information;

receiving a response to the viewing notification from the particular user, wherein the response includes a partial command that is interpreted based on the viewing notification as a requested command to be performed by the set-top box; and

performing, using the processor, the requested command.

11. The set-top box of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise:

detecting a change of media content received at the set-top box; and

updating the usage information to include the change.

12. The set-top box of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise determining which of a set of different users of the set-top box viewed a particular media content based on a biometric input.

13. The set-top box of claim 12 , wherein the biometric input is a fingerprint obtained from a fingerprint reader of a remote control associated with the set-top box.

14. The set-top box of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving a web-based content feed at the set-top box;

identifying a television program related to a portion of the web-based content feed;
