Resonance-shifting luminescent solar concentrators
An optical system and method to overcome luminescent solar concentrator inefficiencies by resonance-shifting, in which sharply directed emission from a bi-layer cavity into a glass substrate returns to interact with the cavity off-resonance at each subsequent reflection, significantly reducing reabsorption loss en route to the edges. In one embodiment, the system comprises a luminescent solar concentrator comprising a transparent substrate, a luminescent film having a variable thickness; and a low refractive index layer disposed between the transparent substrate and the luminescent film.
1. A method for increasing the efficiency of a luminescent solar concentrator, comprising:
providing a transparent substrate;
providing a low refractive index layer to a surface of the transparent substrate; and
providing a continuous luminescent film of laterally varying thickness, the laterally varying thickness defining a first thickness at a first location and a second thickness at a second location, such that the low refractive index layer is disposed between the transparent substrate and the luminescent film.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the continuous luminescent film is deposited onto a transfer medium by spin coating and is transferred to the low refractive index layer on the transparent substrate by float transfer.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the variable thickness of the continuous luminescent film is provided by depositing variable amounts of continuous luminescent film onto the transfer medium.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the low refractive index layer has a refractive index of about 1.1 to about 1.2.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the low refractive index layer has a refractive index of about 1.14.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first location is spaced from the second location such that resonant emission from either of the first and the second locations of the continuous luminescent film does not re-encounter that same resonance in reflectivity.
7. The method of claim 1 , evanescently coupling the continuous luminescent film to the transparent substrate.
8. The method of claim 1 wherein the continuous luminescent film comprises a thickness of one micron or less and the lateral varying thickness of the continuous luminescent film comprises a step-wise thickness variation.
9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising emitting light through the continuous luminescent film at a first position, then transmitted within the transparent substrate, and is reflected off the continuous luminescent film at a second position, wherein the continuous luminescent film thickness at the first position being different than the thickness at the second position.
