Abstract

An energy applicator for directing energy to tissue includes a feedline having an inner conductor, an outer conductor and a dielectric material disposed therebetween, and an antenna assembly having a radiating section operably coupled to the feedline. The energy applicator also includes a first balun structure configured to substantially confine energy to the radiating section when the energy applicator is energized and disposed in tissue, and a second balun structure configured to substantially prevent energy emitted from the radiating section from propagating proximal to the second balun structure along the feedline when the energy applicator is energized but not disposed in tissue.

Claims (20)

1. An energy applicator for directing energy to tissue, comprising:

a feedline having an outer conductor;

a radiating section operably coupled to the feedline;

a first balun portion including:

a first balun insulator disposed around the outer conductor of the feedline; and

a first balun outer conductor disposed around the first balun insulator, the first balun outer conductor including:

a balun short disposed adjacent a proximal portion of the first balun insulator and electrically coupled the outer conductor of the feedline; and

a segment extending proximally relative to the balun short, the segment electrically coupled to the outer conductor of the feedline at a location proximal of the balun short; and

a second balun portion including:

a second balun insulator disposed around the segment of the first balun outer conductor; and

a second balun outer conductor disposed around the second balun insulator.

2. The energy applicator according to claim 1 , wherein the first balun insulator terminates distally of the balun short of the first balun outer conductor.

3. The energy applicator according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the second balun insulator or the second balun outer conductor extends proximally of the balun short of the first balun outer conductor.

4. The energy applicator according to claim 1 , wherein the second balun outer conductor has a proximal portion electrically coupled to the outer conductor of the feedline.

5. The energy applicator according to claim 4 , wherein the proximal portion of the second balun outer conductor is in contact with the segment of the first balun outer conductor.

6. The energy applicator according to claim 1 , wherein the first balun insulator extends distally beyond a distal-most end of the first balun outer conductor.

7. The energy applicator according to claim 6 , wherein the second balun insulator extends distally beyond a distal-most end of the second balun outer conductor.

8. The energy applicator according to claim 1 , wherein the first balun outer conductor is in direct contact with the first balun insulator.

9. The energy applicator according to claim 1 , wherein the balun short of the first balun outer conductor has a truncated tubular shape.

10. The energy applicator according to claim 1 , wherein the second balun portion extends both proximally and distally of the balun short of the first balun outer conductor.
