Abstract

Methods and apparatus involving extended depth of focus IOLs.

Claims (20)

1. An intraocular lens, comprising:

a monofocal lens body that defines a focal length, an optical axis, an optical outer edge, a radius extending from the optical axis to the optical outer edge, and a normalized radial distance (NRD) that extends over the entire radius, the monofocal lens body adding more higher order aberration (HOA) to an eye from a NRD of 0.15 to a NRD of 1.0 than would be added by a spherical IOL with the same focal length, wherein

the monofocal lens body defines a first region that extends from the optical axis to a radius between the optical outer edge and the optical axis, and a second region extending from the first region to the optical outer edge;

the monofocal lens body has an aspheric surface sag value that is configured to create a higher order aberration to normalized radial distance ratio (HOA-NRD ratio) profile within the eye that increases in slope as NRD increases within the first region and does not increase in slope as NRD increases within the second region; and

the first region and the second region are separated by an HOA-NRD profile inflection point.

2. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the HOA-NRD profile increases in slope as NRD increases within the entire first region.

3. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the HOA-NRD profile decreases in slope as NRD increases within at least a substantial majority of the second region.

4. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the HOA-NRD profile inflection point is between 0.4 NRD and 0.8 NRD.

5. The intraocular lens as claimed in any one of claims 1 - 3 and 4 where the HOA is selected from the group consisting of spherical aberration, trefoil and coma.

6. The intraocular lens as claimed in any one of claims 1 - 3 and 4 where the HOA is a spherical aberration.

7. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the monofocal lens body comprises a 20 D monofocal aspheric lens body that adds 0.4 μm of spherical aberration to the eye at a 6 mm entrance pupil and adds 0.1 μm of spherical aberration to the eye at a 4 mm entrance pupil.

8. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the HOA-NRD profile slope defines a sign and the sign is the same over the entire NRD.

9. An intraocular lens, comprising:

a monofocal lens body that defines a focal length, an optical center, an outer edge, a first region that extends from the optical center to a radius between the outer edge and the optical center, and a second region that extends from the radius to the outer edge; wherein

the monofocal lens body includes means for adding more longitudinal spherical aberration (LSA) to an eye, into which the intraocular lens is inserted, from a normalized radial distance (NRD) of 0.15 to a NRD of 1.0 than would be added by a spherical IOL with the same focal length and in such a manner that a longitudinal spherical aberration to normalized radial distance ratio (LSA-NRD ratio) profile that increases in slope as NRD increases within the first region and does not increase in slope as NRD increases within the second region is created within the eye; and

the first region and the second region are separated by an LSA-NRD profile inflection point.

10. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the LSA-NRD profile increases in slope as NRD increases within the entire first region.

11. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the LSA-NRD profile decreases in slope as NRD increases within at least a substantial majority of the second region.

12. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the LSA-NRD profile inflection point is between 0.4 NRD and 0.8 NRD.

13. The intraocular lens as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the LSA-NRD profile slope defines a sign and the sign is the same over the entire NRD.
