Abstract

Compounds, compositions, articles, devices, and methods for the manufacture of light guide plates and back light units including such light guide plates made from glass. In some embodiments, light guide plates (LGPs) are provided that have similar or superior optical properties to light guide plates made from PMMA and that have exceptional mechanical properties such as rigidity, CTE and dimensional stability in high moisture conditions as compared to PMMA light guide plates.

Claims (120)

1. A display device, comprising:

a glass light guide plate with a front face having a width and a height, a back face opposite the front face, and a thickness between the front face and back face, forming four edges around the front and back faces,

wherein one or more edges of the glass light guide plate are illuminated by at least one light source,

wherein the glass comprises about 50 mol % to about 90 mol % SiO 2 , about 0 mol % to about 20 mol % Al 2 O 3 , about 0 mol % to about 20 mol % B 2 O 3 , and about 0 mol % to about 25 mol % R x O,

wherein R is any one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and x is 2, or Zn, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba and x is 1, and

wherein the glass produces less than or equal to 2 dB/500 mm absorption and has a liquidus viscosity greater than 100 kP.

2. The display device of claim 1 , wherein R x O−Al 2 O 3 >0.

3. The display device of claim 1 , wherein 0<R x O−Al 2 O 3 <15.

4. The display device of claim 1 , wherein x=2 and wherein R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 <15.

5. The display device of claim 4 , wherein R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 <2.

6. The display device of claim 1 , wherein x=2 and wherein R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 −MgO>−15.

7. The display device of claim 1 , wherein 0<(R x O−Al 2 O 3 )<25, −11<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 )<11, and −15<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 −MgO)<11.

8. The display device of claim 1 , wherein −1<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 )<2 and −6<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 −MgO)<1.

9. The display device of claim 1 , wherein a roughness of at least one face of the glass light guide plate is less than 0.6 nm.

10. The display device of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the glass light guide plate is between about 0.5 mm and about 8 mm.

11. The display device of claim 10 , wherein the thickness has a variation of less than 5%.

12. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass light guide plate is manufactured from a fusion draw process, slot draw process, or a float process.

13. The display device of claim 1 , wherein at least 10% of iron present in the glass is Fe 2+ .

14. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises less than 1 ppm each of Co, Ni, and Cr.

15. The display device of claim 1 , wherein a concentration of Fe in the glass is <about 50 ppm.

16. The display device of claim 1 , wherein a concentration of Fe in the glass is <about 20 ppm.

17. The display device of claim 1 , wherein a concentration of Fe in the glass is <about 10 ppm.

18. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 60 ppm.

19. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 40 ppm.

20. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 20 ppm.

21. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 10 ppm.

22. The display device of claim 1 , wherein at least one edge of the glass light guide plate is a light injection edge that scatters light within an angle less than 12.8 degrees full width half maximum (FWHM) in transmission.

23. The display device of claim 22 , wherein the light injection edge is unpolished.

24. The display device of claim 22 , wherein the glass light guide plate further comprises a second edge adjacent to the light injection edge and a third edge opposite the second edge and adjacent to the light injection edge, wherein the second edge and the third edge scatter light within an angle of less than 12.8 degrees FWHM in reflection.

25. The display device of claim 24 , wherein the second edge and the third edge have a diffusion angle in reflection that is below 6.4 degrees.

26. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a transmittance at 450 nm with at least 500 mm in length greater than or equal to 85%, a transmittance at 550 nm with at least 500 mm in length greater than or equal to 90%, or a transmittance at 630 nm with at least 500 mm in length greater than or equal to 85%, and combinations thereof.

27. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a density between about 1.95 gm/cc at 20° C. to about 2.7 gm/cc at 20° C.

28. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a Young's modulus between about 62 GPa to about 90 GPa.

29. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a CTE (0-300° C.) between about 30×10 −7 /° C. to about 95×10 −7 /° C.

30. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a density between about 1.95 gm/cc at 20° C. to about 2.7 gm/cc at 20° C., a Young's modulus between about 62 GPa to about 90 GPa, and a CTE (0-300° C.) between about 30×10 −7 /° C. to about 95×10 −7 /° C.

31. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises chemically strengthened glass.

32. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises a T 200P temperature below 1760° C.

33. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises a T 200P temperature below 1730° C.

34. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises a T 200P temperature below 1700° C.

35. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises a liquidus viscosity greater than 500 kP.

36. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the glass comprises about 5 mol % to about 20 mol % B 2 O 3 .

37. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light source is selected from the group consisting of an LED, CCFL, OLED, and combinations thereof.

38. The display device of 1 , wherein a thickness of the display device is less than 5 mm.

39. A display device, comprising:

a glass light guide plate with a front face having a width and a height, a back face opposite the front face, and a thickness between the front face and back face, forming four edges around the front and back faces,

wherein one or more edges of the glass light guide plate are illuminated by at least one light source,

wherein the glass comprises about 60 mol % to about 80 mol % SiO 2 , about 0.1 mol % to about 15 mol % Al 2 O 3 , about 0 mol % to about 12 mol % B 2 O 3 , and about 0.1 mol % to about 15 mol % R x O,

wherein R is any one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and x is 2, or Zn, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba and x is 1, and

wherein the glass produces less than or equal to 2 dB/500 mm absorption and has a liquidus viscosity greater than 100 kP.

40. The display device of claim 39 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 60 ppm.

41. The display device of claim 39 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 40 ppm.

42. The display device of claim 39 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 30 ppm.

43. The display device of claim 39 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 20 ppm.

44. The display device of claim 39 , wherein the glass comprises 0<(R x O−Al 2 O 3 )<25, −11<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 )<11, and −15<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 −MgO)<11.

45. The display device of claim 39 , wherein the glass produces less than or equal to 0.5 dB/500 mm absorption.

46. The display device of claim 39 , wherein the glass produces less than or equal to 0.25 dB/500 mm absorption.

47. The display device of claim 39 , wherein the glass comprises about 5 mol % to about 12 mol % B 2 O 3 .

48. A display device comprising:

a glass light guide plate comprising about 50 mol % to about 90 mol % SiO 2 , about 0 mol % to about 15 mol % Al 2 O 3 , about 0 mol % to about 12 mol % B 2 O 3 , and about 2 mol % to about 25 mol % R x O,

wherein one or more edges of the glass light guide plate are illuminated by at least one light source,

wherein R is any one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and x is 2, or Zn, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba and x is 1,

wherein a liquidus viscosity of the glass is greater than 100 kP, and

wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 60 ppm.

49. The display device of claim 48 , wherein the glass comprises about 5 mol % to about 12 mol % B 2 O 3 .

50. A display device comprising:

a glass light guide plate comprising about 50 mol % to about 90 mol % SiO 2 , about 0 mol % to about 15 mol % Al 2 O 3 , about 0 mol % to about 12 mol % B 2 O 3 , and about 2 mol % to about 25 mol % R x O,

wherein one or more edges of the glass light guide plate are illuminated by at least one light source,

wherein R is any one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and x is 2, or Zn, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba and x is 1,

wherein a liquidus viscosity of the glass is greater than 100 kP, and

wherein the glass produces 2 dB/500 mm or less of light attenuation in the glass sheet.

51. The display device of claim 50 , wherein the glass comprises about 5 mol % to about 12 mol % B 2 O 3 .

52. A display device comprising:

a glass light guide plate comprising about 50 mol % to about 90 mol % SiO 2 , about 0mol % to about 15 mol % Al 2 O 3 , about 0 mol % to about 12 mol % B 2 O 3 , and about 0 mol % to about 25 mol % R x O,

wherein one or more edges of the glass light guide plate are illuminated by at least one light source,

wherein R is any one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and x is 2, or Zn, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba and x is 1,

wherein the glass produces 2 dB/500 mm or less of light attenuation in the glass sheet,

wherein a liquidus viscosity of the glass is greater than 100 kP, and

wherein the glass comprises 0<(R x O−Al 2 O 3 )<25, −11<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 )<11, and −15<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 −Mgo)<11.

53. The display device of claim 52 , wherein the glass comprises about 5 mol % to about 12 mol % B 2 O 3 .

54. The display device of claim 52 , wherein a concentration of Fe of the glass is <about 50 ppm.

55. The display device of claim 52 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 60 ppm.

56. A display device, comprising:

a glass light guide plate with a front face having a width and a height, a back face opposite the front face, and a thickness between the front face and back face, forming four edges around the front and back faces,

wherein one or more edges of the glass light guide plate are illuminated by at least one light source,

wherein the glass comprises about 50 mol % to about 90 mol % SiO 2 , about 0 mol % to about 20 mol % Al 2 O 3 , about 0 mol % to about 20 mol % B 2 O 3 , and about 0 mol % to about 25 mol % R x O,

wherein R is any one or more of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and x is 2, or R is any one or more of Zn, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba and x is 1,

wherein the glass produces less than or equal to 2 dB/500 mm absorption, and

wherein a roughness of at least one of the front face and back face is less than 0.6 nm.

57. The display device of claim 56 , wherein R x O−Al 2 O 3 >0.

58. The display device of claim 56 , wherein 0<R x O−Al 2 O 3 <15.

59. The display device of claim 56 , wherein x=2 and wherein R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 <15.

60. The display device of claim 59 , wherein R 2 O −Al 2 O 3 <2.

61. The display device of claim 56 , wherein x=2 and wherein R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 −MgO>−15.

62. The display device of claim 56 , wherein 0<(R x O−Al 2 O 3 )<25, −11<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 )<11, and −15<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 −MgO)<11.

63. The display device of claim 56 , wherein −1<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 )<2 and −6<(R 2 O−Al 2 O 3 −MgO)<1.

64. The display device of claim 56 , wherein a thickness of the glass light guide plate ranges from about 0.5 mm to about 8 mm.

65. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass comprises about 5 mol % to about 20 mol% B 2 O 3 .

66. The display device of claim 56 , wherein a concentration of Fe in the glass is <about 50 ppm.

67. The display device of claim 56 , wherein a concentration of Fe in the glass is <about 20 ppm.

68. The display device of claim 56 , wherein a concentration of Fe in the glass is <about 10 ppm.

69. The display device of claim 66 , wherein at least 10% of the Fe in the glass is Fe 2+ .

70. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass comprises less than 1 ppm each of Co, Ni, and Cr.

71. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 60 ppm.

72. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 40 ppm.

73. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 20 ppm.

74. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass comprises Fe+30Cr+35Ni<about 10 ppm.

75. The display device of claim 56 , wherein at least one edge of the glass light guide plate is a light injection edge that scatters light within an angle less than 12.8 degrees full width half maximum (FWHM) in transmission.

76. The display device of claim 75 , wherein the light injection edge is unpolished.

77. The display device of claim 75 , wherein the glass light guide plate further comprises a second edge adjacent to the light injection edge and a third edge opposite the second edge and adjacent to the light injection edge, wherein the second edge and the third edge scatter light within an angle of less than 12.8 degrees FWHM in reflection.

78. The display device of claim 77 , wherein the second edge and the third edge have a diffusion angle in reflection that is below 6.4 degrees.

79. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a transmittance at 450 nm with at least 500 mm in length greater than or equal to 85%, a transmittance at 550 nm with at least 500 mm in length greater than or equal to 90%, or a transmittance at 630 nm with at least 500 mm in length greater than or equal to 85%, and combinations thereof.

80. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a density from about 1.95 gm/cc at 20° C. to about 2.7 gm/cc at 20° C.

81. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a Young's modulus from about 62 GPa to about 90 GPa.

82. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a CTE (0-300° C.) from about 30×10 −7 /° C. to about 95×10 −7 /° C.

83. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises a density from about 1.95 gm/cc at 20° C. to about 2.7 gm/cc at 20° C., a Young's modulus from about 62 GPa to about 90 GPa, and a CTE (0-300° C.) from about 30×10 −7 /° C. to about 95×10 −7 /° C.

84. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass light guide plate comprises chemically strengthened glass.

85. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass comprises a T 200P temperature below 1760° C.

86. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the glass comprises a liquidus viscosity greater than 500 kP.

87. The display device of claim 56 , wherein the at least one light source is selected from the group consisting of an LED, CCFL, OLED, and combinations thereof.

88. The display device of claim 56 , wherein a thickness of the display device is less than 5 mm.
