Abstract

Multiple tumors are grouped into multiple treatment groups. Tumors in different treatment groups are treated by a radiosurgery in different treatment sessions than the tumors in the same treatment groups. The tumors can be grouped so as to decrease the biologically effective dose received by normal tissue in the treatment area. The radiosurgical planning system can divide the tumors into groups based on their location relative to each other and the radiation the tumors will be treated with and create a plan for treating the tumors according to the treatment groups.

Claims (42)

1. A method of treating multiple tumors using radiosurgery, the method comprising:

assigning each of the tumors to one of multiple treatment groups, wherein a quantity of the treatment groups is less than a quantity of the tumors; and

irradiating the tumors using a radiosurgery device in multiple treatment sessions based on the assigning, wherein any two of the tumors that are assigned to different ones of the treatment groups are treated during different ones of the treatment sessions.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the different ones of the treatment sessions are on different days.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the quantity of treatment groups is in a range from 2 to 5.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing a scan of a region of a body including the tumors to generate scan images;

determining boundaries of the tumors in the scan images;

expanding the boundaries by a safety margin to determine a planned target volume for each of the tumors; and

determining a location and the planned target volume for each of the tumors, using the location and the planned target volume when assigning each of the tumors to one of the treatment groups.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the scan is performed by a computed tomography scanning device.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein using the location and the planned target volume when assigning each of the tumors to one of the treatment groups is achieved by placing each of the tumors that have a greater dose impact on each other into different ones of the treatment groups.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the location is a centroid coordinate.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the assigning each of the tumors to one of the treatment groups is performed to minimize a biologically effective dose to healthy tissue in a region of a patient containing the tumors.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the assigning each of the tumors to one of the treatment groups comprises:

determining a quantity of the treatment groups;

assigning a first subset of the tumors with the greater dose impact to separate ones of the treatment groups; and

for each remaining tumor, assigning the remaining tumors to the separate ones of the treatment groups in order of largest to smallest dose impact by:

determining, for a next remaining tumor, which one of the treatment groups contains a subset of the tumors that would create a lowest dose impact to a normal tissue if the next remaining tumor were to be added, and

assigning the next remaining tumor to that one of the treatment groups.

10. The method of claim 9 , where in determining which one of the treatment groups contains a subset of the tumors that would receive a lowest amount of radiation is estimated based on a summed dose impact for the subset of the tumors on a normal tissue.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radiosurgery device is a device that can perform stereotactic radiosurgery as one of its functions.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the radiosurgery device is selected from a proton beam device, a Gamma Knife device, a CyberKnife device, an arc therapy device, or a multiple static beam device.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the assigning each of the tumors to the one of the treatment groups comprises assigning each of the tumors to the one of the treatment groups using a computing device.

14. A method for radiosurgical treatment, the method comprising:

assigning each of multiple tumors to one of multiple treatment groups using a computing device, wherein a quantity of the treatment groups is less than a quantity of the tumors;

generating a treatment schedule including multiple treatment sessions using the computing device, wherein any two of the tumors that are assigned to different ones of the treatment groups are treated in different ones of the treatment sessions; and

treating an area containing at least some of the tumors according to the treatment schedule using a radiosurgical device.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

generating at least two different ones of the treatment groups; and

determining that a selected one of the treatment groups would result in a higher therapeutic ratio than another one of the treatment groups when treated, wherein the treating comprises delivering a radiation dose to the selected one of the treatment groups.

16. A method for treating tumors in a patient using radiosurgery, the method comprising:

identifying the tumors in the patient;

calculating a dose impact for each of the tumors;

placing a first one of the tumors having a largest dose impact into a first one of multiple treatment groups;

placing a second one of the tumors having a second largest dose impact into a second one of the treatment groups;

placing each other tumor into either the first one of the treatment groups, the second one of the treatment groups, or a third one of the treatment groups based on which placement would result in a lowest summed dose impact and a lowest group dose impact;

calculating a first radiation dose needed to treat each of the treatment groups;

fractionating the first radiation dose to minimize a second radiation dose to normal tissue in the patient;

delivering the first radiation dose to each of the treatment groups at different times using a radiosurgical device.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising calculating the lowest summed dose impact as a sum of dose impacts between a given one of the tumors and all other ones of the tumors that would be in a given one of the treatment groups.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising calculating the lowest group dose impact as a sum of dose impacts for each pair of tumors that would be within a given one of the treatment groups.
