Device and methods for quantifying analytes
The present invention relates to devices and methods for measuring the quantity of multiple analytes in a sample. The device is designed such that each of the analyte sensing elements is configured to measure the quantity of a predetermined analyte and where the machine executable instructions are configured to select the proper analyte sensing element corresponding to the analyte to be measured.
1. A method for measuring the quantity of one or more analytes with an instrument, comprising:
receiving a selection of one or more specific analytes from an input device of the instrument;
exciting one or more labels associated with the one or more specific analytes using one or more analyte sensing elements, wherein the instrument includes at least two analyte sensing elements that each comprise an energy source, an excitation filter and an emission filter that differ between analyte sensing elements, wherein each analyte sensing element used to excite each of the one or more labels is automatically selected by a processor using machine executable instructions and the received selection of the one or more specific analytes from the input device;
measuring emission spectra from the one or more labels associated with the one or more specific analytes with one or more photodetectors, and
quantitating the one or more specific analytes based on the emission spectra and one or more standard curves associated with the one or more specific analytes.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selection of the one or more specific analytes with the input device occurs through a user interface.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of storing a result created from the measurement and quantitation in a memory storage device.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more specific analytes are selected from the group consisting of DNA, RNA, or protein.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of converting a relative fluorescence intensity into a known concentration using the processor, wherein the relative fluorescence intensity is based upon the emission spectra.
6. A method for measuring the quantity of one or more biological molecules with an instrument, comprising:
receiving a selection of one or more biological molecules from an input device;
exciting one or more labels associated with the one or more biological molecules using one or more energy sources, wherein the instrument includes at least two different energy sources, wherein each energy source used to excite each of the one or more biological molecules is automatically selected by a processor using machine executable instructions and the received selection of the one or more biological molecules from the input device;
measuring emission spectra from the one or more labels associated with the one or more biological molecules with one or more photodetectors, and
quantitating the one or more biological molecules based on the emission spectra and one or more standard curves associated with the one or more biological molecules.
7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of selecting an emission filter for each selected energy source based on the received selection of the one or more biological molecules using the processor.
8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of selecting an excitation filter for each selected energy source based on the received selection of the one or more biological molecules using the processor.
9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the selection of the one or more biological molecules with the input device occurs through a user interface.
10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of storing a result created from the measurement in the memory.
11. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more biological molecules are selected from the group consisting of DNA, RNA, or protein.
12. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of converting a relative fluorescence intensity into a known concentration using the processor, wherein the relative fluorescence intensity is based upon the emission spectra.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least two different analyte sensing elements have energy sources that emit different ranges of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy.
14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least two different analyte sensing elements have excitation filters or emission filters that isolate different ranges of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy.
15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least two different analyte sensing elements have energy sources that emit different ranges of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy, excitation filters that isolate different ranges of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy, and emission filters that isolate different ranges of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy.
16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more specific analytes comprise multiple analytes in the same sample, and wherein different analyte sensing elements are selected for each of the different analytes.
17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more standard curves are generated based upon (i) one or more samples without the one or more specific analytes and (ii) one or more samples with a known concentration of the one or more specific analytes.
18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the machine executable instructions include the one or more standard curves associated with the one or more specific analytes.
19. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more biological molecules comprise multiple biological molecules in the same sample, and wherein different energy sources and different filters are selected for each of the different biological molecules.
20. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more standard curves are generated based upon (i) one or more samples without the one or more biological molecules and (ii) one or more samples with a known concentration of the one or more biological molecules.
21. The method of claim 6 , wherein the machine executable instructions include the one or more standard curves associated with the one or more biological molecules.
