Abstract

Techniques and compositions for applying films to a variety of substrates, from water-borne coating compositions, are provided. The techniques involve providing desiccant and applying the desiccant with water-borne film-forming composition, in application to a substrate. The desiccant composition provides for take up of free water in of the film-forming composition, without total reliance on ambient conditions, to advantage. Compositions, methods, techniques and resulting constructions are described. The techniques can be applied in wet thick film applications, but are not limited to such applications.

Claims (49)

1. A method of forming a film on a substrate; the method including a step of:

(a) applying by spray coating, a wet, water-borne film coating to a vertical substrate; the substrate having a substrate surface including at least one joint; the wet film comprising:

(i) water-borne film forming composition including: water and acrylic polymer; and,

(ii) desiccant composition that is at least partially active, in an amount adequate to at least partially take up free water in the wet water-borne , film; the desiccant composition including: Portland cement;

(b) the step of applying comprising:

(i) mixing, during operation, two component streams: a first comprising the water-borne film forming composition; and, a second comprising the desiccant composition; and,

(ii) applying the coating to a wet film thickness of at least 10 mils.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises mixing, while applying, the water-borne film forming composition and the desiccant composition in a volume ratio of water-borne film forming composition to desiccant composition of at least 2:1.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises mixing, while applying, the water-borne film forming composition and the desiccant composition in a volume ratio within the range of 2:1 to 8:1, inclusive.

4. A method according to claim 2 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying a desiccant composition further comprising: attapulgite clay suspending agent.

5. A method according to claim 2 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying a desiccant composition including: non-ionic hydroxyl, propyl cellulose ether compatibilizer.

6. A method according to claim 2 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying a desiccant composition further comprising: emulsifier.

7. A method according to claim 4 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying a water-borne film forming composition including: ceramic microsphere filler.

8. A method according to claim 4 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying a water-borne film forming composition including: sufficient amine pH adjuster to provide a pH of the film forming composition at 9-10.

9. A method according to claim 4 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying a water-borne film forming composition including: xanthan gum freeze thaw agent.

10. A method according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying a desiccant composition comprising:

(i) attapulgite clay suspending agent; and,

(ii) non-ionic hydroxyl, propyl cellulose ether compatibilizer.

11. A method according to claim 10 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying a desiccant composition further comprising:

(i) emulsifier.

12. A method according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the step of applying is to a vertical substrate comprising styrene.

13. A method according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the step of applying is to a vertical substrate comprising wood.

14. A method according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the water-borne film forming composition further comprises coalescing solvent.

15. A method according to claim 14 wherein:

(a) the desiccant composition further comprises glycol ether coalescing solvent.

16. A method according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying the coating to a wet film thickness of at least 15 mils.

17. A method according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the step of applying comprises applying the coating to a wet film thickness of at least 20 mils.

18. A method of forming a film on a substrate; the method including a step of:

(a) applying by spray coating, a wet, water-borne film coating to a vertical substrate comprising at least one of styrene and wood; the substrate having a substrate surface including at least one joint; the wet film comprising:

(i) water-borne film forming composition including: water, acrylic polymer and coalescing solvent; and,

(ii) desiccant composition that is at least partially active, in an amount adequate to at least partially take up free water in the wet water-borne , film; the desiccant composition including: Portland cement; and, glycol ether coalescing solvent

(b) the step of applying comprising:

(i) mixing, during operation, two component streams: a first comprising the water-borne film forming composition; and, a second comprising the desiccant; and,

(ii) applying the coating to a wet film thickness of at least 20 mils.
