Abstract

An approach is provided for providing a collaborative reply to a flooding message over an ad-hoc mesh network. A reply message to a flooding message is received by a wireless node within the ad-hoc network. The wireless node monitors for an acknowledgement of receipt of the reply message according to a routing table and initiates a scheduled transmission of the reply message based on the monitoring.

Claims (65)

1. A method comprising:

broadcasting a query message from a wireless node that comprises an application, wherein the application is based on awareness information;

receiving a reply message to the application of the wireless node from a neighboring wireless node positioned at a physical location, wherein the reply message comprises location information of the neighboring wireless node;

displaying the reply message in the wireless node based on the received location information and an associated context of the wireless node,

wherein the wireless node is a wireless device of a user,

wherein the wireless node and the neighboring wireless node communicate with each other via the query message broadcast as a flooding message from the wireless node and the reply message received by the application of the wireless node from the neighboring wireless node,

wherein the reply message relates to the application of the wireless node and is processed by the application, and

wherein information relevant to the user is displayed in the wireless node based on the processed reply message that relates to the query message of the application of the wireless node; and

displaying different information in the wireless node based on time and a local environment.

2. A method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises associating location information with one or more of social networking applications, location-based applications, applications for determining presence, applications for determining context associated with the wireless node, and advertising applications.

3. A method of claim 1 ,

wherein the method further comprises presenting restaurants ranked by a number of people in each restaurant that have other wireless nodes and that have same food preferences as the user,

wherein the presenting the restaurants is further based on the location information,

wherein a list of restaurants for ranking is collected based on the query message and the reply message between the wireless node of the user and the people that have other wireless nodes, and

wherein the query message and the reply message contain anonymous information of food preferences for the user and the people that have other wireless nodes.

4. A method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises discovering by the application events for the user of the wireless node based on the location information.

5. A method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises initiating by the application local discussion threads and/or group chats over an ad-hoc network.

6. A method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises establishing via the processor whether the application of the wireless node of the user knows the location at which a stored information is to be activated.

7. An apparatus in a wireless node comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one memory including computer program code for one or more programs,

the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following:

broadcast a query message from the wireless node that comprises an application, wherein the application is based on awareness information;

receive a reply message to the application of the wireless node from a neighboring wireless node positioned at a physical location, wherein the reply message comprises location information of the neighboring wireless node;

display the reply message in the wireless node based on the received location information and an associated context of the wireless node,

wherein the wireless node is a wireless device of a user,

wherein the wireless node and the neighboring wireless node communicate with each other via the query message broadcast as a flooding message from the wireless node and the reply message received by the application of the wireless node from the neighboring wireless node,

wherein the reply message relates to the application of the wireless node and is processed by the application, and

wherein information relevant to the user is displayed in the wireless node based on the processed reply message that relates to the query message of the application of the wireless node; and

display different information in the wireless node based on time and a local environment.

8. An apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the apparatus is further caused to:

associate location information with one or more of social networking applications, location-based applications, applications for determining presence, applications for determining context associated with the wireless node, and advertising applications.

9. An apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the apparatus is further caused to:

present restaurants ranked by a number of people in each restaurant that have other wireless nodes and that have same food preferences as the user,

wherein presenting the restaurants is further based on the location information,

wherein a list of restaurants for ranking is collected based on the query message and the reply message between the wireless node of the user and the people that have other wireless nodes, and

wherein the query message and the reply message contain anonymous information of food preferences for the user and the people that have other wireless nodes.

10. An apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the apparatus is further caused to:

discover by the application events for the user of the wireless node based on the location information.

11. An apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the apparatus is further caused to:

initiate by the application local discussion threads and/or group chats over an ad-hoc network.

12. An apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the apparatus is further caused to:

establish via the processor whether the application of the wireless node of the user knows the location at which a stored information is to be activated.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium carrying one or more sequences of one or more instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause an apparatus to at least perform:

broadcast a query message from a wireless node that comprises an application, wherein the application is based on awareness information;

receive a reply message to the application of the wireless node from a neighboring wireless node positioned at a physical location, wherein the reply message comprises location information of the neighboring wireless node;

display the reply message in the wireless node based on the received location information and an associated context of the wireless node,

wherein the wireless node is a wireless device of a user,

wherein the wireless node and the neighboring wireless node communicate with each other via the query message broadcast as a flooding message from the wireless node and the reply message received by the application of the wireless node from the neighboring wireless node,

wherein the reply message relates to the application of the wireless node and is processed by the application, and

wherein information relevant to the user is displayed in the wireless node based on the processed reply message that relates to the query message of the application of the wireless node; and

display different information in the wireless node based on time and a local environment.

14. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the apparatus is caused to further perform:

associate location information with one or more of social networking applications, location-based applications, applications for determining presence, applications for determining context associated with the wireless node, and advertising applications.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the apparatus is caused to further perform:

present restaurants ranked by a number of people in each restaurant that have other wireless nodes and that have same food preferences as the user,

wherein presenting the restaurants is further based on the location information,

wherein a list of restaurants for ranking is collected based on the query message and the reply message between the wireless node of the user and the people that have other wireless nodes, and

wherein the query message and the reply message contain anonymous information of food preferences for the user and the people that have other wireless nodes.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the apparatus is caused to further perform:

discover by the application events for the user of the wireless node based on the location information.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the apparatus is caused to further perform:

initiate by the application local discussion threads and/or group chats over an ad-hoc network.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the apparatus is caused to further perform:

establish via the processor whether the application of the wireless node of the user knows the location at which a stored information is to be activated.
