Abstract

Buried object locators including an omnidirectional antenna array and a gradient array are disclosed. A locator display may include information associated with a buried object based on both omnidirectional antenna array signals and gradient antenna array signals.

Claims (40)

1. A buried object locator antenna array, comprising:

an antenna array support structure;

an antenna node housing;

an omnidirectional three-axis antenna array including a plurality of nested antenna coils enclosed within the antenna node housing and disposed on the antenna array support structure;

a gradient antenna array having four or more outer antenna coils disposed about the omnidirectional three-axis antenna array; and

a processing element to process signals received from the omnidirectional three-axis antenna array and the gradient antenna array to generate information associated with a buried object.

2. The antenna array of claim 1 , further comprising a central antenna assembly including one or more vertical antenna coils.

3. The antenna array of claim 1 , wherein centerlines of a pair of antenna coils of the gradient antenna array substantially intersect a centerpoint of the omnidirectional antenna array.

4. The antenna array of claim 1 , wherein centerlines of two pairs of antenna elements of the gradient antenna array substantially intersect a center point of the omnidirectional antenna array.

5. A method of determining buried object information in a buried object locator, comprising:

receiving magnetic field signals from an omnidirectional antenna array and a quad-gradient antenna array; and

processing the omnidirectional antenna array signal and the quad gradient antenna array signal to generate display information associated with the buried object, wherein the display information includes a first set of display information generated from the magnetic field signals received from the quad-gradient antenna array at a distance from the buried object, and a second set of display information generated from the magnetic field signals received from the omnidirectional antenna array in a close proximity to the buried object.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the processing includes:

selecting a first diametrically opposed pair of antenna coils of the quad gradient antenna array to provide a first set of output signals;

receiving the output signals of the first diametrically opposed pair of antenna coils at a set of digital filters to use a first state buffer set;

selecting an inverse set of diametrically opposed antenna coils of the quad gradient antenna array to provide a second set of output signals;

receiving the output of the inverse set of diametrically opposed antenna coils at a set of digital filters to use a second state buffer set; and

store the digital filter outputs in a non-transitory memory of the buried object locator.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising providing a visual output display of the display information.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the display information includes information representing a position or location of the buried object.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the processing includes obtaining information from a positioning device.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the display information is generated based in part on the information obtained from the positioning device.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the positioning device is a Global Positioning System (GPS).

12. The method of claim 5 , wherein the display information includes a line representing the buried object.

13. The method of claim 5 , wherein the processing includes determining distortion of the magnetic field signals received from the omnidirectional antenna array and the quad-gradient antenna array.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the display information is generated based in part on the determined distortion of the magnetic field signals.

15. A method of determining buried object information in a buried object locator, comprising:

receiving magnetic field signals from an omnidirectional antenna array and a quad-gradient antenna array;

processing the omnidirectional antenna array signal and the quad gradient antenna array signal to generate information associated with the buried object based on both the omnidirectional antenna array signal and the quad gradient antenna array signal, wherein the processing includes:

selecting a first diametrically opposed pair of antenna coils of the quad gradient antenna array to provide a first set of output signals;

receiving the output signals of the first diametrically opposed pair of antenna coils at a set of digital filters to use a first state buffer set;

selecting an inverse set of diametrically opposed antenna coils of the quad gradient antenna array to provide a second set of output signals;

receiving the output of the inverse set of diametrically opposed antenna coils at a set of digital filters to use a second state buffer set; and

store the digital filter outputs in a non-transitory memory of the buried object locator; and

providing a visual output display including information associated with the buried object.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the information associated with the buried object includes a position or location of the buried object.

17. The antenna array of claim 1 , wherein the four or more outer antenna coils of the gradient antenna array are disposed within approximately one half antenna diameter or a ferrite core length of a center of the omnidirectional three-axis antenna array.

18. The antenna array of claim 1 , further comprising a switching circuit to selectively switch pairs of signals received from the gradient antenna array.

19. The antenna array of claim 1 , wherein the outer antenna coils of the gradient antenna array are coupled in an anti-series configuration to facilitate signal differencing.

20. The antenna array of claim 1 , wherein the processing element is configured in a printed circuit board (PCB).
