Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for calculating point values for users who participate in activities. An activity is first captured with a sensor. A processor classifies the activity by comparing a sensor signal to templates. Once the activity is classified, an activity factor is selected. Point values are then calculated as a function of the activity factor and duration of the activity.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the at least one sensor comprises an accelerometer.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the detecting the level of user inactivity during the first time period further comprises:

determining that the user fails to exceed a first predetermined heart rate threshold during the first time period.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

classifying the received first set of sensor data indicating the first activity; and

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein at least one activity template is created by a user.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the comparing the at least one signal from the at least one sensor further comprises:

comparing, to activity templates, the at least one signal from the at least one sensor of the first set of sensors using a best match approach and leaving an activity unclassified if there is not a sufficient match.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a first threshold of activity performed by the user to counteract the detected level of user inactivity.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the recalculating the energy expenditure point value further comprises:

initiating, a threshold time period after detecting the level of user inactivity, the recalculating of the energy expenditure point value, wherein the threshold time period is determined based on an inactivity state of the user.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the recalculating the energy expenditure point value further comprises:

determining a first inactivity conversion factor based on the detected level of user inactivity; and

decreasing the energy expenditure point value in accordance with the first inactivity conversion factor.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a first inactivity state of the user based on the detected level of user inactivity.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the first physical body posture of the user further comprises:

determining that a location of a first sensor, of the second set of sensors, satisfies a first threshold distance from a location of a second sensors of the second set of sensors.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the detecting the level of user inactivity during the first time period further comprises:

determining, based on the received first set of sensor data, that the first activity does not have a corresponding activity factor satisfying a first threshold during the first time period.

14. An activity tracking device comprising:

a first set of sensors that monitor activity performed by a user;

a second set of sensors mounted to different portions of the user's body;

one or more processors;

tangible memory containing computer-executable instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the activity tracking device to perform the steps comprising:

receiving, from the first set of sensors, a first set of sensor data indicating a first activity performed by the user during a first time period;

calculating, based on the received first set of sensor data and the first time period, an energy expenditure point value;

receiving, from a second set of sensors, location data indicating a location of one or more sensors, of the second set of sensors, relative to other sensors in the second set of sensors;

determining, based on the data received from the first set of sensors and the second set of sensors, at least a first physical body posture of the user;

in response to determining that the user is in the first physical body posture, detecting, based on the received sensor data, a level of user inactivity during the first time period;

transmitting, based on the level of user inactivity, a first message indicating that the user is approaching a first inactivity threshold;

prompting, based on a duration of the detected level of user inactivity, the user to perform a second activity during a second time period;

receiving, from the first set of sensors, a second set of sensor data indicating the second activity performed by the user during the second time period;

recalculating, based on determining that the second set of sensor data satisfies an activity threshold associated with the detected level of user inactivity, the energy expenditure point value; and
