Abstract

A surgical stapling apparatus is provided including a cartridge assembly defining a tissue contacting surface; an anvil assembly defining a tissue contacting surface; and a surgical buttress releasably secured to at least one of the tissue contacting surface of the cartridge assembly and the tissue contacting surface of the anvil assembly by at least one anchor. A loading unit is provided including a surgical buttress releasably secured to an anvil assembly and/or a staple cartridge secured thereto by at least one anchor, and a drive assembly including a knife blade, wherein movement of the drive assembly from a proximal position to a distal position results in the knife blade cutting the at least one anchor and freeing each surgical buttress from the anvil assembly and/or cartridge assembly.

Claims (15)

1. An apparatus for forming an anastomosis between adjacent sections of tissue, comprising:

a body portion;

an anvil assembly movably mounted at a distal end of the body portion for movement toward and away from the body portion;

an approximation assembly extending between the body portion and the anvil assembly for moving the anvil assembly toward and away from the body portion; and

a fluid dispersion assembly including at least one angled surface formed in a nozzle thereof for dispersing a fluid, wherein each angled surface is oriented at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the body portion;

wherein the dispersion assembly includes a plurality of ejection ports in communication with at least one of a first fluid source or a second fluid source, the first fluid source having a wound treatment material and the second fluid source having a second wound treatment material, the first wound treatment material being different from the second wound treatment material.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid dispersion assembly is operatively associated with the approximation assembly.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising a manifold having the plurality of ejection ports for dispensing the wound treatment materials.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein a distal end portion of the manifold is tapered at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the body portion.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , the fluid dispersion assembly including a cap operatively connected to the nozzle so as to define a channel therebetween.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising at least one conduit having a distal end in fluid communication with at least one of the plurality of ejection ports and an end in communication with the first fluid source or the second fluid source.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the first fluid source includes a first part of a multi-part wound treatment material, and wherein the second fluid source includes a second part of the multi-part wound treatment material.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the multi-part wound treatment material is one of a sealant and a bio-adhesive.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising a third fluid source comprising a gas.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid dispersion assembly is configured to direct a fluid from the third fluid source across the plurality of ejection ports.
