Abstract

The present invention relates to novel combined laundry detergent, bleach, and antimicrobial composition incorporating novel sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid compounds, and methods for making and using them. The sulfoperoxycarboxylic compounds used in compositions of the invention are storage stable, water soluble and have low to no odor. Compositions of the invention may be in the form of a liquid, a solid, or a gel. The sulfoperoxycarboxylic compounds useful in preparing compositions of the present invention can be formed from non-petroleum based renewable materials.

Claims (47)

1. A laundry composition, comprising:

one or more compounds of the following formulas:

or salts, or esters or mixtures, thereof;

an oxidizing agent;

a surfactant;

a C 1 -C 22 carboxylic acid;

and

a stabilizing agent.

2. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a viscosity reducer.

3. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a defoamer.

4. The composition of claim 3 wherein the defoamer is an alkyl alkoxylate containing in part or whole poly-propylene oxide units.

5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition is a liquid, gel or solid.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said compound in the composition includes one or more of:

salts, esters, and mixtures thereof.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the pH of the composition is less than about 7.

8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the compound is present at about 0.05 wt % to about 50 wt %.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the compound is present at about 0.05 wt % to about 30 wt %.

10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the compound is present at about 1.0 wt % to about 20 wt %.

11. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing agent comprises hydrogen peroxide, an organic peracid, an organic peroxide, or combinations thereof.

12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the carboxylic acid is comprised of at least one C 1 to C 4 carboxylic acid.

13. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a peroxycarboxylic acid.

14. The composition of claim 13 , wherein the peroxycarboxylic acid comprises peroxyoctanoic acid, peroxynonanoic acid, peroxydecanoic acid, or combinations thereof.

15. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the peroxyoctanoic acid is present at about 0.1 wt % to about 10 wt %.

16. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the stabilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of organic amino polyphosphonic acid complexing agents, organic hydroxyl polyphosphonic acid complexing agents, and mixtures thereof.

17. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the stabilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acids, hydroxycarboxylic acids, aminocarboxylic acids, heterocyclic carboxylic acids and mixtures thereof.

18. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is substantially phosphorous free.

19. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises:

(a) about 0.05 wt % to about 50 wt % of a compound according to claim 1 ;

23. The composition of claim 19 wherein the surfactant is comprised of linear alkyl benzene sulphonate or linear alkyl benzene sulfonic acid, or mixtures thereof.

24. A laundry composition prepared by the following method:

forming a peroxycarboxylic acid from a sulfonated fatty acid to make a sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid of one or more of the following formulas:

combining said sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid with an oxidizing agent; a surfactant; a carboxylic acid; and a stabilizing agent to form a laundry composition.

25. The laundry composition of claim 24 wherein said sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid is formed in an oxidative environment.
