Abstract

A user speech interface for interactive media guidance applications, such as television program guides, guides for audio services, guides for video-on-demand (VOD) services, guides for personal video recorders (PVRs), or other suitable guidance applications is provided. Voice commands may be received from a user and guidance activities may be performed in response to the voice commands.

Claims (40)

1. A system for providing customized features based on voice controls, comprising processing circuitry configured to:

receive an audio input from a user, via a microphone of a first device, for performing a guidance operation on a second device, wherein the a first version of an interactive media guidance application is implemented on the first device and a second version of the interactive media guidance application is implemented on the second device, and wherein the first version of the interactive media guidance application and the second version of the interactive media guidance application function with a server to perform interactive media guidance application functions on the second device;

transmit the audio input to a voice recognition system included in the server;

receive a command from the voice recognition system of the server, wherein the command was determined by the voice recognition system based on the audio input;

identify a user profile associated with the first device based on an association of the user profile with the first device;

retrieve, from the user profile, information provided by the user;

determine the guidance operation to be performed on the second device based on the command and the information provided by the user retrieved from the user profile; and

transmit an instruction to perform the guidance operation on the second device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the voice recognition system comprises media cancellation circuitry configured to:

receive audio output of the first device or the seconds device; and

subtract the audio output from the audio input.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to invoke a remote procedure on the server using a remote procedure call.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to store an association between the user profile and the first device.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the guidance operation comprises a request for one of a customized guide interface, targeted advertisement, favorite media source, or media content of the user.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information provided by the user comprises demographic data such as age, gender, nationality, profession, income, and location, or a favorites list that includes media content or media sources that are preferred by the user.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the command comprises a request for information identifying media content that is available on the second device; and

the second device is configured to present the information in response to receiving the instruction to perform the guidance operation.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instruction to perform the guidance operation is executed by the second device.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry configured to identify the user profile is further configured to identify the user profile based on an association of the user profile with a sound of the audio input.

10. A method for providing customized features based on voice controls, comprising:

receiving an audio input from a user, via a microphone of a first device, for performing a guidance operation on a second device, wherein the a first version of an interactive media guidance application is implemented on the first device and a second version of the interactive media guidance application is implemented on the second device, and wherein the first version of the interactive media guidance application and the second version of the interactive media guidance application function with a server to perform interactive media guidance application functions on the second device;

transmitting the audio input to a voice recognition system included in the server;

receiving a command from the voice recognition system of the server, wherein the command was determined by the voice recognition system based on the audio input;

identifying a user profile associated with the first device based on an association of the user profile with the first device;

retrieving, from the user profile, information provided by the user;

determining the guidance operation to be performed on the second device based on the command and the information provided by the user retrieved from the user profile; and

transmitting an instruction to perform the guidance operation on the second device.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the voice recognition system comprises media cancellation circuitry that:

receives audio output of the first device or the second device; and

subtracts the audio output from the audio input.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising invoking a remote procedure on the server using a remote procedure call.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising storing an association between the user profile and the first device.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the guidance operation comprises a request for one of a customized guide interface, targeted advertisement, favorite media source, or media content of the user.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the information provided by the user comprises demographic data such as age, gender, nationality, profession, income, and location, or a favorites list that includes media content or media sources that are preferred by the user.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the command comprises a request for information identifying media content that is available on the second device; and

the second device presents the information in response to receiving the instruction to perform the guidance operation.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the instruction to perform the guidance operation is executed by the second device.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the identifying the user profile further comprises identifying the user profile based on an association of the user profile with a sound of the audio input.
