Abstract

A stemless humeral component for replacing the humeral head of a patient's humerus includes a support flange having a number of cantilevered legs extending distally away from a bottom surface thereof. Instruments and methods for surgically installing the stemless humeral component are also disclosed.

Claims (64)

1. A surgical instrument assembly for use during a surgical procedure to implant a stemless humeral component to replace the humeral head of a patient's humerus, comprising:

a sizing instrument having a size that mimics the size of the stemless humeral component to be implanted to replace the humeral head of the patient's humerus, the sizing instrument having a generally round body with a plurality of punch guide holes formed therein,

wherein (i) the round body of the sizing instrument is sized such that the radial outer edge thereof is positioned in contact with cortical bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus, and (ii) each of the plurality of punch guide holes is positioned in a location that (a) is located over cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus, and (b) aligns with a plurality of legs of the stemless humeral component, and

wherein:

the sizing instrument has an upper surface and a lower surface,

each of the punch guide holes extends from the upper surface to the lower surface,

the sizing instrument further includes a number of bone-engaging spikes extending downwardly from its lower surface, and

each of the number of bone-engaging spikes is positioned in a location to engage cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus.

2. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the punch guide holes of the sizing instrument is generally T-shaped.

3. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

an elongated drill guide bore extends through a center of the sizing instrument from the upper surface to the lower surface, and

the drill guide bore is positioned in a location that is located over cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus.

4. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a surgical punch configured to punch holes in the cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus to receive the plurality of legs of the stemless humeral component, wherein:

the surgical punch comprises a plurality of tines, and

each of the plurality of tines of the surgical punch is positioned in a location that aligns with one of the punch guide holes of the sizing instrument.

5. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a trial head component, wherein:

the trial head component comprises (i) a generally hemispherically-shaped trial bearing surface, and (ii) an underside surface opposite the trial bearing surface, and

the diameter of the underside surface of the trial head component is substantially the same as the diameter of the round body of the sizing instrument.

6. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 5 , wherein:

the trial head component further comprises a center lug extending laterally away from the underside surface, and

the center lug is configured to be frictionally secured to the sizing instrument when the center lug is inserted into an elongated drill guide bore extending through a center of the sizing instrument.

7. A surgical instrument assembly for use during a surgical procedure to implant a stemless humeral component and a humeral head component to replace the humeral head of a patient's humerus, comprising:

a trial head component having a size that mimics the size of the humeral head component to be implanted in the patient's humerus, the trial head component comprising (i) a generally hemispherically-shaped trial bearing surface, and (ii) an underside surface opposite the trial bearing surface, and

a sizing instrument having a size that mimics the size of the stemless humeral component to be implanted in the patient's humerus, the sizing instrument having a generally round body with a plurality of punch guide holes formed therein,

wherein (i) the diameter of the underside surface of the trial head component is substantially the same as the diameter of the round body of the sizing instrument, and (ii) each of the plurality of punch guide holes is positioned in a location that aligns with a plurality of legs of the stemless humeral component.

8. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 7 , wherein the round body of the sizing instrument is sized such that the radial outer edge thereof is positioned in contact with cortical bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus.

9. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 7 , wherein each of the plurality of punch guide holes is positioned in a location that is located over cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus.

10. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 7 , wherein:

the sizing instrument has an upper surface and a lower surface,

each of the punch guide holes extends from the upper surface to the lower surface,

the sizing instrument further includes a number of bone-engaging spikes extending downwardly from its lower surface, and

each of the number of bone-engaging spikes is positioned in a location to engage cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus.

11. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 7 , wherein each of the punch guide holes of the sizing instrument is generally T-shaped.

12. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 7 , wherein:

the round body of the sizing instrument is generally dome-shaped having a flattened upper surface and a planar opposite, lower surface,

an elongated drill guide bore extends through a center of the sizing instrument from the upper surface to the lower surface, and

the drill guide bore is positioned in a location that is located over cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus.

13. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 7 , further comprising a surgical punch configured to punch holes in the cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus to receive the plurality of legs of the stemless humeral component, wherein:

the surgical punch comprises a plurality of tines, and

each of the plurality of tines of the surgical punch is positioned in a location that aligns with one of the punch guide holes of the sizing instrument.

14. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 7 , wherein:

the trial head component further comprises a center lug extending laterally away from the underside surface, and

the center lug is configured to be frictionally secured to the sizing instrument when the center lug is inserted into an elongated drill guide bore extending through a center of the sizing instrument.

15. A surgical instrument assembly for use during a surgical procedure to implant a stemless humeral component to replace the humeral head of a patient's humerus, comprising:

a sizing instrument having a size that mimics the size of the stemless humeral component to be implanted to replace the humeral head of the patient's humerus, the sizing instrument having a generally round body with a plurality of punch guide holes formed therein,

wherein (i) the round body of the sizing instrument is sized such that the radial outer edge thereof is positioned in contact with cortical bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus, and (ii) each of the plurality of punch guide holes is positioned in a location that (a) is located over cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus, and (b) aligns with a plurality of legs of the stemless humeral component, and

wherein:

the round body of the sizing instrument is generally dome-shaped having a flattened upper surface and a planar opposite, lower surface,

an elongated drill guide bore extends through a center of the sizing instrument from the upper surface to the lower surface, and

the drill guide bore is positioned in a location that is located over cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus.

16. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , wherein:

each of the punch guide holes extends from the upper surface to the lower surface,

the sizing instrument further includes a number of bone-engaging spikes extending downwardly from its lower surface, and

each of the number of bone-engaging spikes is positioned in a location to engage cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus when the sizing instrument is secured to the patient's humerus.

17. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , further comprising a surgical punch configured to punch holes in the cancellous bone tissue of the patient's humerus to receive the plurality of legs of the stemless humeral component, wherein:

the surgical punch comprises a plurality of tines, and

each of the plurality of tines of the surgical punch is positioned in a location that aligns with one of the punch guide holes of the sizing instrument.

18. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , further comprising a trial head component, wherein:

the trial head component comprises (i) a generally hemispherically-shaped trial bearing surface, and (ii) an underside surface opposite the trial bearing surface, and

the diameter of the underside surface of the trial head component is substantially the same as the diameter of the round body of the sizing instrument.

19. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 18 , wherein:

the trial head component further comprises a center lug extending laterally away from the underside surface, and

the center lug is configured to be frictionally secured to the sizing instrument when the center lug is inserted into an elongated drill guide bore extending through a center of the sizing instrument.

20. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , wherein each of the punch guide holes of the sizing instrument is generally T-shaped.
