Abstract

A downhole tool system includes a downhole tool string configured to couple to a downhole conveyance that extends in a wellbore from a terranean surface through at least a portion of a subterranean zone, the subterranean zone including a geologic formation; and a heating device coupled with the downhole tool string, the heating device configured to transfer heat to the geologic formation in the wellbore at a specified temperature sufficient to adjust a quality of the geologic formation associated with a rock strength of the geologic formation.

Claims (42)

1. A method for treating a geologic formation, comprising:

positioning, in a wellbore, a downhole heating device that is coupled to a downhole conveyance that extends from a terranean surface to a subterranean zone that comprises a geologic formation;

generating, with the downhole heating device, an amount of heat power at a specified temperature between 400° C. and 600° C. and a specified time duration between 30 minutes and an hour to transfer to a portion of the geologic formation in the wellbore;

reducing a static Young's modulus of the geologic formation by about 10 percent based on the generated amount of heat power at the specified temperature; and

generating one or more fractures in the geologic formation based on the generated amount of heat power at the specified temperature and specified duration.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating, with the downhole heating device, an amount of heat power at a specified temperature to transfer to a portion of the geologic formation comprises at least one of:

activating a downhole laser to generate the amount of heat power at the specified temperature to transfer to the portion of the geologic formation;

activating a downhole microwave to generate the amount of heat power at the specified temperature to transfer to the portion of the geologic formation; or

activating a downhole combustor to generate the amount of heat power at the specified temperature to transfer to the portion of the geologic formation.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising focusing the generated heat power on a portion of the geologic formation in the wellbore.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising performing a hydraulic fracturing operation subsequently to adjusting the quality of the geologic formation associated with the rock strength of the geologic formation.

5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

measuring a temperature in the wellbore adjacent the portion of the geologic formation during generation of the heat power;

comparing the measured temperature and the specified temperature; and

based on a difference in the measured temperature and the specified temperature, adjusting the downhole heating device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing a hydraulic fracturing operation subsequently to adjusting the quality of the geologic formation associated with the rock strength of the geologic formation.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring a temperature in the wellbore adjacent the portion of the geologic formation during generation of the heat power;

comparing the measured temperature and the specified temperature; and

based on a difference in the measured temperature and the specified temperature, adjusting the downhole heating device.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising performing a hydraulic fracturing operation subsequently to adjusting the quality of the geologic formation associated with the rock strength of the geologic formation.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein adjusting the downhole heating device comprises adjusting the downhole heating device from the terranean surface.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the specified temperature based, at least in part, on one or more of:

a property of a drilling fluid used to form the wellbore;

a mineral property of the geologic formation; or

a physical property of the geologic formation.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the geologic formation comprises a shale formation.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the shale formation comprises more than 50% clay by composition.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the geologic formation comprises a shale formation.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the downhole heating device is coupled with a hydraulic fracturing tool through the downhole conveyance.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the downhole conveyance comprises a tubular workstring.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising blistering, with the amount of heat power at the specified temperature and the specified time duration that is transferred to the portion of the geologic formation in the wellbore, the portion of the geologic formation in the wellbore.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the geologic formation in the wellbore comprises a first portion, the method further comprising:

rotating, in the wellbore, the downhole heating device;

generating, with the downhole heating device, another amount of heat power at the specified temperature and the specified time duration to transfer to a second portion of the geologic formation in the wellbore;

reducing the static Young's modulus of the geologic formation at the second portion by about 10 percent based on the generated amount of heat power at the specified temperature.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

measuring a temperature in the wellbore adjacent the second portion of the geologic formation during generation of the heat power;

comparing the measured temperature and the specified temperature; and

based on a difference in the measured temperature and the specified temperature, adjusting the downhole heating device.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising performing a hydraulic fracturing operation subsequently to adjusting the quality of the second portion of the geologic formation associated with the rock strength of the geologic formation.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein adjusting the downhole heating device comprises adjusting the downhole heating device from the terranean surface.
