Abstract

Method and system for providing continuous calibration of analyte sensors includes calibrating a first sensor, receiving data associated with detected analyte levels from the first sensor, and calibrating a second sensor based on a predetermined scaling factor and data associated with detected analyte levels from the first sensor, is disclosed.

Claims (49)

1. A method of analyte sensor calibration, comprising:

receiving analyte signals from a first analyte sensor positioned in fluid contact with bodily fluid under a skin surface during a first time period;

receiving analyte signals from a second analyte sensor positioned in fluid contact with bodily fluid under a skin surface during a second time period;

defining an overlap time period beginning with the positioning of the second analyte sensor and ending with the removal of the first analyte sensor from fluid contact with the bodily fluid;

determining that the second analyte sensor meets an acceptable stability level during the overlap time period; and

transferring a calibration parameter associated with calibration of the first analyte sensor to calibration of the second analyte sensor, wherein the calibration parameter includes a scaling factor associated with the analyte signals from the first and second analyte sensors, and wherein the scaling factor is determined by performing an autocorrelation function.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the second analyte sensor meets the acceptable stability level includes correlating the signals generated by the second analyte sensor with the signals from the first analyte sensor during the overlap time period.

3. The method of claim 1 , further including calibrating the second analyte sensor solely based on the transferred calibration parameter.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the level of accuracy of the signals from the calibrated first analyte sensor is the same as the level of accuracy of the signals from the calibrated second analyte sensor.

5. The method of claim 1 , further including calibrating the first analyte sensor with a reference measurement.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second analyte sensor is calibrated without any reference measurement during the entire life of the second analyte sensor when positioned in fluid contact with the bodily fluid.

7. A system for analyte sensor calibration, comprising:

a first analyte sensor for positioning in fluid contact with bodily fluid under a skin surface during a first time period;

a second analyte sensor for positioning in fluid contact with bodily fluid under a skin surface during a second time period; and

one or more processors configured to process signals generated by the first and second analyte sensors, the one or more processors further configured to:

define an overlap time period beginning with the positioning of the second analyte sensor and ending with the removal of the first analyte sensor from fluid contact with the bodily fluid;

determine that the second analyte sensor meets an acceptable stability level during the overlap time period;

perform an autocorrelation function to determine a scaling factor associated with the signals generated by the first and second analyte sensors; and

transfer a calibration parameter associated with calibration of the first analyte sensor to calibration of the second analyte sensor, wherein the calibration parameter includes the scaling factor.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to correlate the signals generated by the second analyte sensor with the signals from the first analyte sensor during the overlap time period to determine that the second analyte sensor meets the acceptable stability level.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to calibrate the second analyte sensor solely based on the transferred calibration parameter.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the level of accuracy of the signals from the calibrated first analyte sensor is the same as the level of accuracy of the signals from the calibrated second analyte sensor.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to calibrate the first analyte sensor with a reference measurement.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second analyte sensor is calibrated without any reference measurement during the entire life of the second analyte sensor when positioned in fluid contact with the bodily fluid.

13. A method of analyte sensor calibration, comprising:

receiving analyte signals from a first analyte sensor positioned in fluid contact with bodily fluid under a skin surface during a first time period;

receiving analyte signals from a second analyte sensor positioned in fluid contact with bodily fluid under a skin surface during a second time period;

defining an overlap time period beginning with the positioning of the second analyte sensor and ending with the removal of the first analyte sensor from fluid contact with the bodily fluid;

determining that the second analyte sensor meets an acceptable stability level during the overlap time period; and

transferring a calibration parameter associated with calibration of the first analyte sensor to calibration of the second analyte sensor, wherein the calibration parameter includes a scaling factor associated with the analyte signals from the first and second analyte sensors, and wherein the scaling factor is determined based on an average error between the signals generated by the first and second analyte sensor.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein determining that the second analyte sensor meets the acceptable stability level includes correlating the signals generated by the second analyte sensor with the signals from the first analyte sensor during the overlap time period.

15. The method of claim 13 , further including calibrating the second analyte sensor solely based on the transferred calibration parameter.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the level of accuracy of the signals from the calibrated first analyte sensor is the same as the level of accuracy of the signals from the calibrated second analyte sensor.
