Abstract

Systems for monitoring left atrial pressure using implantable cardiac monitoring devices and, more specifically, to a left atrial pressure sensor implanted through a septal wall are presented herein.

Claims (17)

1. A method of implanting a wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device into a left atrium of a patient, the method comprising:

obtaining the wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device, the wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device comprising:

a sensor;

at least one proximal anchoring element disposed proximally to the sensor, each proximal anchoring element comprising a free end and an attached end attached to the sensor; and

a bent sleeve disposed between the sensor and the proximal anchoring element, the bent sleeve providing a distal anchor and including a proximal sleeve portion coupled to the at least one proximal anchoring element and a distal sleeve portion coupled to the sensor such that the distal sleeve portion and the sensor extend obliquely relative to the proximal sleeve portion;

attaching the wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device to a catheter, the catheter comprising:

a catheter proximal end;

a catheter distal end; and

a tether protruding from the catheter distal end, wherein the tether is attached to each free end of each of the at least one proximal anchoring element;

situating the wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device and the catheter within a lumen of a sheath, the sheath comprising a sheath proximal end and a sheath distal end, wherein the sensor is situated nearest to the sheath distal end, each of the at least one proximal anchoring element is in a folded configuration extending in a proximal direction within the lumen, and the tether extends from the free end of each of the at least one proximal anchoring element in a proximal direction toward the catheter;

advancing the catheter, the sheath, and the wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device through a hole formed in the atrial septum from the right atrium into the left atrium; and

anchoring the wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device to the septum, wherein deploying the at least one proximal anchoring element into an unfolded configuration prevents movement of the sensor in the distal direction and the bent sleeve prevents movement of the sensor in the proximal direction and biases the sensor toward the septum.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retracting the sheath to expose the sensor within the left atrium.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising retracting the catheter, the sheath and the wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device together to situate the sensor against a left wall of the atrial septum in the left atrium.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising retracting the sheath to expose the at least one proximal anchoring element, allowing the proximal anchoring element to elastically rebound from the folded configuration to an anchoring configuration.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising detaching the tether from each free end of the at least one proximal anchoring element, and retracting the catheter and sheath from the patient.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising compressing each of the at least one proximal anchoring element from the anchoring configuration into the folded configuration to fit the wireless and leadless left atrial pressure measurement device into the sheath.
