Abstract

A vertebral insert may include a first linkage, a second linkage, and a third linkage. The first, second, and third linkages may at least partially defining a cavity. The insert may be movable between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration, and the movement of the first and second linkages with respect to one another may be configured to reciprocally move the insert between the collapsed and expanded configurations.

Claims (22)

1. A vertebral spacer system, comprising:

a vertebral spacer;

a bracket coupled to the vertebral spacer;

a first plate; and

a second plate,

wherein the second plate is coupled to the first plate, the second plate being movable relative to the first plate,

wherein the second plate defines a cavity with a completely enclosed perimeter through which the vertebral spacer extends, and

wherein the second plate is coupled to the bracket while being movable with respect to the first plate.

2. The vertebral spacer system of claim 1 , wherein the relative movement of the first and second plates with respect to one another alters a size of the cavity.

3. The vertebral spacer system of claim 2 , wherein any one of the first and second plates includes a locking member configured to lock the relative positions of the first and second plates with respect to one another.

4. The vertebral spacer system of claim 3 , wherein the locking member is a rotatable flange.

5. The vertebral spacer system of claim 4 , wherein the locking member extends from the second plate through an elongate channel disposed through the first plate to couple the first and second plates to one another.

6. The vertebral spacer system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second plates includes a throughbore.

7. The vertebral spacer system of claim 6 , further including one or more fastening members, each fastening member being configured to extend through the throughbore of the first or second plates into a vertebral body.

8. The vertebral spacer system of claim 6 , wherein the throughbore of the first plate is defined on a first side by a raised annular lip.

9. The vertebral spacer system of claim 8 , wherein the throughbore of the first plate is defined on a second side by an atraumatic lip.

10. The vertebral spacer system of claim 1 , wherein the vertebral spacer includes a superior surface and an inferior surface each configured to contact a vertebral body.

11. The vertebral spacer system of claim 1 , wherein the vertebral spacer further defines a cavity configured to receive bone graft or bone-growth inducing material.

12. The vertebral spacer system of claim 1 , wherein the first plate includes a first stepped portion.

13. The vertebral spacer system of claim 12 , wherein the second plate includes a second stepped portion configured to slide against the first stepped portion.

14. The vertebral spacer system of claim 13 , wherein the first stepped portion is configured to slide over the cavity defined by the second plate to reduce an effective opening size of the cavity.

15. The vertebral spacer system of claim 13 , wherein a plurality of geometric configurations are configured to increase friction between the first and second stepped portions.
