Abstract

A method and apparatus for service quality monitoring in a wireless network is provided. The network has both wired and wireless connections, and has at least one access point capable of providing wireless connectivity to client devices. Wireless connectivity is provided to client devices from the access point with at least one client-serving radio transceiver. Radio test signals are generated for network testing from a testing transceiver at the access point.

Claims (33)

1. A method for service quality monitoring in a wireless network, the network having both wired and wireless connections, the network having at least one access point capable of providing wireless connectivity to client devices, the at least one access point having at least one client-serving access point radio transceiver capable of serving clients and at least one client transceiver positioned as a part of the at least one access point and capable of creating wireless connections to access point transceivers in the network, the method comprising:

sending and receiving wireless signals from the client-serving access point radio transceiver to serve clients; and

generating radio test signals for network testing from the at least one client transceiver; wherein

the test signals measure the service quality of the network on at least one layer of the OSI layers L1-L7; and wherein

the starting point of the test route of the test signals and ending point of the test route of the test signals are a client transceiver positioned as a part of an access point in the network.

2. The method of claim 1 including minimizing radio interference between signals of the client-serving access point radio transceiver and the at least one client transceiver.

3. The method of claim 1 where the client transceiver for both the starting point and the ending point is positioned at the same access point as the at least one client-serving access point radio transceiver.

4. The method of claim 1 where client transceivers for the starting point of the test route and the ending point of the test route are positioned at different access points, with each of the access points having at least one client-serving access point radio transceiver.

5. The method of claim 1 where the test signals measure the OSI layer 1 radio spectrum characteristics.

6. The method of claim 1 where the test signals measure the OSI layer 2 radio data rates or radio retry rates.

7. The method of claim 1 where the test signals measure the OSI layer 3-7 connection availability or throughput.

8. The method of claim 2 where distance between client-serving radio transceiver antenna and client transceiver antenna is sufficient to minimize interference between them.

9. The method of claim 2 where the client-serving access point radio transceiver and the client transceiver each have an antenna, and where the minimizing of the radio interference is carried out by using a directional antenna pattern for the client transceiver, or the client-serving access point transceiver, or both the client transceiver and the client-serving access point transceiver, to increase attenuation between the antennas.

10. The method of claim 2 where the minimizing of the radio interference is carried out by transmitting the radio test signals using an antenna that is not directly connected to the at least one access point and is connected to the at least one access point through RF connectivity.

11. The method of claim 2 where RF filtering is used to reduce noise or interference leakage between the client-serving access point radio transceiver and the client transceiver.

12. The method of claim 2 wherein the minimizing of the radio interference is carried out by using a channel for the client-serving access point radio transceiver that is different from the channel for the client transceiver.

13. A method for service quality monitoring in a wireless network, the network having both wired and wireless connections, the network having one or more test servers, the network having at least one access point capable of providing wireless connectivity to client devices, the at least one access point having at least one client-serving access point radio transceiver capable of serving clients and at least one client transceiver positioned as a part of the access point and capable of establishing wireless connections to access point transceivers in the network, the method comprising:

sending and receiving wireless signals from the client-serving access point radio transceiver to serve clients;

establishing a wireless connection between the client transceiver and a client-serving access point in the network;

initiating test signals at one or more of the test servers in the network and directing the test signals towards the at least one client transceiver positioned at the at least one access point, where the test signals are directed at least in part over a wireless connection within the network, and where the test signals measure the service quality of the network.

14. The method of claim 13 including minimizing radio interference between signals of the client-serving access point radio transceiver and the client transceiver.

15. The method of claim 13 where distance between client-serving access point radio transceiver antenna and client transceiver antenna is sufficient to minimize interference between them.

16. The method of claim 13 where the client-serving access point radio transceiver and the client transceiver each have an antenna, and where the minimizing of the radio interference is carried out by using a directional antenna pattern for the client transceiver, or the client-serving access point radio transceiver, or both the client transceiver and the client-serving access point radio transceiver, to increase attenuation between the antennas.

17. A method for service quality monitoring in a wireless network, the network having both wired and wireless connections, the network having at least one access point capable of providing wireless connectivity to client devices, the at least one access point having at least one client-serving access point radio transceiver capable of serving clients, the network having at least one client transceiver capable of creating wireless connections to access point transceivers in the network, the method comprising:

sending and receiving wireless signals from the client-serving access point radio transceiver to serve clients;

positioning the client transceiver physically separate from the at least one access point in order to minimize interference during testing;

transmitting a test profile over a wireless connection from the client-serving access point radio transceiver to the client transceiver; and.

generating radio test signals from the client transceiver, based on the test profile, and directing the radio test signals through an end-to-end connection for network testing; wherein

the test signals measure the service quality of the network on at least one layer of the OSI layers L3-L7; and wherein

the end point of the test route of the test signals is a server or end point in network.

18. The method of claim 17 where the test signals measure the OSI layer 3-7 connection availability or throughput.

19. The method of claim 17 where the client device is powered by the at least one access point.

20. The method of claim 17 where the client device is powered by a source other than the access point.
