Abstract

Compounds, powders, and cathode active materials that can be used in lithium ion batteries are described herein. Methods of making such compounds, powders, and cathode active materials are described.

Claims (17)

1. A compound represented by Formula (III):

Li α Co 1−x M x Al γ O δ   (III)

wherein:

M is Mn,

0.95≤α≤1.10,

0<x<0.08,

0<γ≤0.05, and

1.95≤δ≤2.60.

2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.01≤γ≤0.03.

3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.02≤γ≤0.03.

4. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.002≤γ≤0.004.

5. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.001≤γ≤0.005.

6. The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 2000 ppm.

7. The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 900 ppm.

8. The compound of claim 1 , wherein Al is in an amount of at least 500 ppm.

9. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound has an R 3 m crystal.

10. The compound of claim 1 , wherein 0.95≤α≤1.00.
