Extensible nonwoven fabric
Extensible nonwoven fabrics having improved elongation, extensibility, abrasion resistance and toughness. In particular, embodiments of the invention are directed to extensible spunbond fabrics comprising a polymeric blend of a metallocene catalyzed polypropylene, polyethylene, and a third polymer component.
1. A nonwoven fabric comprising a plurality of fibers that are bonded to each other together to form a coherent web, wherein the fibers are bonded to each other with a plurality of bond patterns consisting of cross-direction cylindrical or rod shaped bonds that extend only in the cross direction (CD) of the web.
2. The fabric of claim 1 , wherein the fabric exhibits one or more of:
an increase in High Speed Deformation Simulation machine direction elongation at 5 N that is from about 25 to 150% in comparison to a similar fabric that has been thermally bonded with an oval shaped bond pattern;
an increase in High Speed Deformation Simulation cross direction elongation at 5 N that is from about 75 to 100% in comparison to a similar fabric that has been thermally bonded with an oval shaped bond pattern;
an increase in High Speed Deformation Simulation machine direction elongation at 10 N that is from about 75 to 125% in comparison to a similar fabric that has been thermally bonded with an oval shaped bond pattern; and
an increase in High Speed Deformation Simulation cross direction elongation at 10 N that is from about 25 to 70% in comparison to a similar fabric that has been thermally bonded with an oval shaped bond pattern.
3. The fabric of claim 1 , wherein the bonds cover from 8 to 12% of the fabric.
4. The fabric of claim 1 , wherein the cross-directional cylindrical or rod shaped bond patterns have a length that is from about 1.5 to 10 times the width.
5. The fabric of claim 1 , wherein the cross-directional cylindrical or rod shaped bond patterns have an aspect ratio defined by a length of the bond pattern divided by the width of the bond pattern that is from about 2 to 10.
6. The fabric of claim 5 , wherein the aspect ratio of the bond patterns is from about 4 to 8.
7. The fabric of claim 1 , wherein the fabric comprises a spunbond nonwoven fabric.
8. A composite sheet material having a plurality of layers defining a spunbond-meltblown-spunbond (SMS) construction in which the spunbond layer comprises the nonwoven fabric of claim 1 .
9. A composite sheet material having a plurality of layers defining a spunbond-meltblown-meltblown-spunbond (SMMS) construction in which at least one of the spunbond layers comprises the nonwoven fabric of claim 1 .
10. An absorbent article comprising the fabric of claim 1 .
11. The absorbent article of claim 10 , wherein the article comprises a diaper.
