Optical trocar with scope holding assembly
An optical access apparatus for receiving an endoscope to permit visualization during passage through tissue includes an access member dimensioned for insertion through body tissue. The access member defines a longitudinal axis and has a longitudinal opening for receiving an endoscope. The access member has a closed penetrating end adapted to pass through tissue. The closed penetrating end is transparent to permit visualization of tissue with the endoscope. The optical access apparatus further includes a locking collet coaxially mounted relative to the longitudinal axis of the access member and a manual member mounted adjacent the locking collet and operatively engageable therewith. The locking collet has internal surfaces defining an internal passage to permit passage of the surgical instrument. The manual member is adapted for rotational movement about the longitudinal axis to reduce an internal dimension of the internal passage of the locking collet to cause the internal surfaces of the locking collet to securely engage the surgical instrument.
1. An optical access apparatus for reception of an endoscope to permit visualization during passage through tissue, the access apparatus comprising:
an access member dimensioned for insertion through body tissue, the access member defining a longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal opening for introduction of an endoscope, the longitudinal opening being closed by a penetrating end adapted to pass through tissue, the penetrating end being at least partially transparent to permit visualization of tissue with the endoscope;
a locking collet coaxially mounted relative to the longitudinal axis of the access member, the locking collet having internal surfaces defining an internal passage to receive the endoscope, the locking collet having alternating outer cam surfaces and grooves, the locking collet including a collar having collar sections with adjacent collar sections separated by slots, the collar sections defining the internal surfaces and adapted to be deflected radially inwards relative to the longitudinal axis of the access member; and
a manual member coaxially mounted about the locking collet and having internal cam shelves, the manual member fixed from longitudinal movement relative to the access member and adapted for rotational movement about the longitudinal axis from an initial position where the internal cam shelves are accommodated within the grooves of the locking collet to an actuated position where the internal cam shelves traverse the grooves to engage the outer cam surfaces of the locking collet to at least partially compress the locking collet to reduce an internal dimension of the internal passage of the locking collet to thereby cause the internal surfaces of the collar sections of the locking collet to directly engage the endoscope and maintain the endoscope at a desired longitudinal position relative to the access member.
2. The access apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the locking collet is fixed from longitudinal movement relative to the access member.
3. The access apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the penetrating end of the access member is closed and defines a general tapered configuration.
4. The access apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the penetrating end includes opposed concave surfaces and opposed convex surfaces.
5. The access apparatus according to claim 1 including an endoscope.
6. An access apparatus, which comprises:
an access member dimensioned for insertion through body tissue, the access member defining a longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal opening for passage of an instrument, the access member including a tapered distalmost end;
a locking collet coaxially mounted relative to the longitudinal axis of the access member, the locking collet including a collar having collar sections with adjacent collar sections separated by slots, the collar sections of the locking collet defining an internal passage to receive the instrument and being adapted to deflect radially inwards relative to the longitudinal axis of the access member; and
a manual member coaxially mounted about the locking collet, the manual member fixed from longitudinal movement relative to the access member and adapted for rotational movement about the longitudinal axis from an initial position to an actuated position to at least partially deflect the collar sections of the locking collet radially inwards to reduce an internal dimension of the internal passage such that the collar sections directly engage the instrument, thereby securing the instrument and maintaining the instrument at a desired longitudinal position relative to the access member.
7. The access apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the locking collet includes internal surfaces, the internal surfaces at least partially defining the internal passage and being configured to securely engage the instrument when the manual member is in the actuated position.

The access apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the locking collet and the manual member include corresponding camming surfaces whereby, upon rotational movement of the manual member to the actuated position, the camming surfaces cooperate to reduce the internal dimension of the internal passage of the locking collet.
9. The access apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the locking collet is fixed from longitudinal movement relative to the access member.
10. The access apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the manual member includes internal cam shelves and the locking collet includes alternating outer cam surfaces and grooves, the internal cam shelves being accommodated within the grooves when in an initial position of the manual member whereby, upon rotational movement of the manual member to an actuated position, the internal cam shelves traverse the grooves to engage the outer cam surfaces of the locking collet to at least partially compress the locking collet.
