Abstract

A base station is configured to communicate with at least a first user equipment (UE) and a second UE, wherein the base station is configured to communicate with the first UE using a first modulation scheme, and with the second UE using a second, different, modulation scheme, wherein communications with the first and second UEs are arranged to be substantially orthogonal to each other. A method of allocating resources in a communication network comprising a base station operable to communicate with a first user equipment (UE) and a second UE, the method comprising using a first modulation scheme for communication with the first UE, and using a second, different, modulation scheme for communication with the second UE, wherein communications with the first and second UEs are configured to be substantially orthogonal to each other.

Claims (37)

1. A base station comprising:

a transceiver; and

a controller configured to:

receive, from a first user equipment (UE), a first message including first information on at least one signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of at least one reference signal, wherein each of the at least one reference signal is transmitted by a different base station on a different resource element,

receive, from a second UE, a second message including second information on at least one SINR of at least one reference signal, wherein each of the at least one reference signal is transmitted by a different base station on a different resource element,

determine a first modulation scheme for the first UE based on the first information on the at least one SINR received from the first UE,

determine a second modulation scheme for the second UE based on second information on the at least one SINR received from the second UE,

performing communicate with the first UE using the first modulation scheme, and

performing communicate with the second UE using the second modulation scheme,

wherein communications with the first UE and the second UE are configured to be substantially orthogonal to each other.

2. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the communications are configured to be orthogonal to each other in at least one of time, frequency or spatial domains.

3. The base station of claim 2 , wherein orthogonality in the spatial domain utilizes beamforming to steer a first beam at the first UE and a second beam at the second UE, and whereby the first beam uses the first modulation scheme and the second beam uses the second modulation scheme.

4. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to determine the first modulation scheme or the second modulation scheme for the first UE according to a switching criterion that is determined either in a centralized manner or in a distributed manner.

5. The base station of claim 2 , wherein the base station is configured to determine whether to use the first modulation scheme or the second modulation scheme according to a switching criterion that is determined either in a centralized manner or in a distributed manner.

6. The base station of claim 3 , wherein the base station is configured to determine whether to use the first modulation scheme or the second modulation scheme according to a switching criterion that is determined either in a centralized manner or in a distributed manner.

7. The base station of claim 4 , wherein the switching criterion is determined using a first threshold test related to the SINR of the at least one reference signal received from the first UE and a second threshold test related to a number of aggressors, and

wherein if both first and second threshold test are satisfied, modulation scheme used in connection with the first UE switches from the first modulation scheme to the second modulation scheme.

8. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the first and second modulation schemes are quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) and Feher's QAM (FQAM), respectively.

9. The base station of claim 2 , wherein the first and second modulation schemes are quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) and Feher's QAM (FQAM), respectively.

10. The base station of claim 3 , wherein the first and second modulation schemes are quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) and Feher's QAM (FQAM), respectively.

11. A method of allocating resources in a communication network by a base station, the method comprising:

receiving, from a first user equipment (UE), a first message including first information on at least one signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of at least one reference signal, wherein each of the at least one reference signal is transmitted by a different base station on a different resource element;

receiving, from a second UE, a second message including second information on at least one SINR of at least one reference signal, wherein each of the at least one reference signal is transmitted by a different base station on a different resource element;

determining a first modulation scheme for the first UE based on the first information on the at least one SINR received from the first UE;

determining a second modulation scheme for the second UE based on second information on the at least one SINR received from the second UE;

performing communication with the first UE using the first modulation scheme; and

performing communication with the second UE using the second modulation scheme,

wherein communications with the first UE and the second UE are configured to be substantially orthogonal to each other.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the communications are configured to be orthogonal to each other in at least one of time, frequency or spatial domains.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein orthogonality in the spatial domain utilizes beamforming to steer a first beam at the first UE and a second beam at the second UE, and whereby the first beam uses the first modulation scheme and the second beam uses the second modulation scheme.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the determining of the first modulation scheme comprises determining the first modulation scheme or the second modulation scheme for the first UE according to a switching criterion that is determined either in a centralized manner or in a distributed manner.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the base station is configured to determine whether to use the first modulation scheme or the second modulation scheme according to a switching criterion that is determined either in a centralized manner or in a distributed manner.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the base station is configured to determine whether to use the first modulation scheme or the second modulation scheme according to a switching criterion that is determined either in a centralized manner or in a distributed manner.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the switching criterion is determined using a first threshold test related to the SINR of the at least one reference signal received from the first UE and a second threshold test related to a number of aggressors, wherein if both first and second threshold test are satisfied, modulation scheme used in connection with the first UE switches from the first modulation scheme to the second modulation scheme.
