Abstract

An electronic device can output a priming cue prior to outputting an alert on the electronic device. A priming cue can be a haptic priming cue, a visual priming cue, an audio priming cue, or various combinations of these priming cues. The priming cue can be perceived by a user either consciously or subconsciously and can increase a user's perceptual state for the alert.

Claims (61)

1. An electronic device, comprising:

a haptic priming and alert system comprising a haptic output device; and

a processing device operably connected to the haptic priming and alert system and adapted to:

detect an alert condition indicating the haptic priming and alert system should output a haptic alert;

in response to detecting the alert condition, determine whether to output a haptic priming cue before the haptic alert based on at least one of:

an elapsed time from a user interaction with the electronic device;

a detected user activity;

a motion of the electronic device; or

an operational state of the electronic device;

in response to a determination to output the haptic priming cue, cause the haptic output device of the haptic priming and alert system to output the haptic priming cue before producing the haptic alert; and

in response to a determination not to output the haptic priming cue, cause the haptic output device of the haptic priming and alert system to output the haptic alert without a corresponding haptic priming cue;

wherein:

the haptic priming cue is below a conscious perceptual threshold that is selected so that the haptic priming cue is imperceptible or barely perceptible to a user for an entire duration of the haptic priming cue; and

the haptic priming cue has at least one of a distinct, intensity or waveform from the haptic alert.

2. The electronic device as in claim 1 , further comprising a sensor operably connected to the processing device and configured to sense at least one of light, motion, touch, heat, position, pressure, sound, or images.

3. The electronic device as in claim 2 , wherein the processing device is adapted to determine at least one of an intensity or a duration of the haptic priming cue based on input from the sensor.

4. The electronic device as in claim 2 , wherein the processing device is adapted to determine at least one of an intensity or a duration of the haptic alert based on one or more factors prior to outputting the haptic alert.

5. The electronic device as in claim 4 , wherein the one or more factors comprise at least one of:

an output from the sensor; and

a default haptic priming cue.

6. The electronic device as in claim 1 , wherein the processing device is adapted to cause the haptic priming and alert system to provide the haptic alert after the haptic priming cue is provided.

7. The electronic device as in claim 1 , wherein the haptic output device is an actuator.

8. The electronic device as in claim 1 , wherein the haptic priming cue has at least one of a duration or a magnitude below a threshold value representing a threshold of conscious human perception.

9. The electronic device as in claim 1 , further comprising:

an audio sensor operably coupled to the processing device; and

a motion sensor operably coupled to the processing device; wherein

the processing device is further adapted to output the haptic priming cue at an intensity level determined based on at least one of an input from the audio sensor or an input from the motion sensor.

10. The electronic device as in claim 9 , wherein the detected user activity is detected based on the input from the motion sensor.

11. A method for priming a haptic alert of an electronic device, the method comprising:

detecting an alert condition that indicates the electronic device should output the haptic alert;

in response to detecting an occurrence of the alert condition, determining whether to output a haptic priming cue before the haptic alert based on at least one of:

an elapsed time from a user interaction with the electronic device;

a detected user activity;

a motion of the electronic device; or

an operational state of the electronic device;

in response to a determination to output the haptic priming cue:

outputting the haptic priming cue before producing the haptic alert on the electronic device, the haptic priming cue being below a threshold of conscious human perception that is selected so that the haptic priming cue is imperceptible or barely perceptible to a user for an entire duration of the haptic priming cue; and

after outputting at least a portion of the haptic priming cue, outputting the haptic alert on the electronic device; and

in response to a determination not to output the haptic priming cue, outputting the haptic alert on the electronic device without outputting the haptic priming cue; wherein

the haptic priming cue has at least one of a distinct intensity or waveform from the haptic alert.

12. The method as in claim 11 , further comprising, prior to outputting the haptic priming cue, determining at least one of an intensity or a duration of the haptic priming cue.

13. The method as in claim 12 , wherein the intensity or the duration of the haptic priming cue is based on at least one of:

a type of haptic alert to be produced;

the motion of the electronic device;

an environmental condition; or

the operational state of the electronic device.

14. The method as in claim 11 , further comprising determining whether there is a response to the haptic priming cue.

15. The method as in claim 14 , further comprising modifying the haptic priming cue if there is no response to the haptic priming cue.

16. The method as in claim 11 , further comprising:

determining if there is a response to the haptic alert; and

modifying the haptic alert if there is no response to the haptic alert.

17. The method as in claim 16 , further comprising ending the haptic alert if a time period for outputting the haptic alert ends and a user has not responded to the haptic alert.

18. The method as in claim 17 , wherein the time period for outputting the haptic alert is based on one or more characteristics of the haptic alert.

19. The method as in claim 18 , wherein the one or more characteristics comprises at least one of a duration of the haptic alert or an intensity of the haptic alert.

20. The method as in claim 11 , wherein one or more characteristics of the haptic alert is based on one or more characteristics of the haptic priming cue.

21. The method as in claim 11 , wherein the haptic priming cue is output on the electronic device based on a signal received from an external processing device.

22. The method as in claim 11 , wherein in response to the determination to output the haptic priming cue,

after outputting the haptic priming cue and, after a delay of time, outputting the haptic alert on the electronic device.

23. The method as in claim 11 , further comprising:

detecting an environmental condition of the electronic device through at least one of a light sensor or a motion sensor; and

determining at least one of an intensity or a duration of the haptic priming cue based on the environmental condition of the electronic device prior to outputting the haptic priming cue.
