Abstract

A retroreflecting display that enables the formation of a real image in free space includes a first light source that generates a first light output; a first beam splitter module; and a retroreflector module opposite the first light source.

Claims (45)

1. A retroreflecting display comprising:

a first light source that generates a first light output;

a first beam splitter module; and

a retroreflector module opposite the first light source;

wherein the first light source transmits the first light output to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the first light output into a first reflected component and a second transmitted component of the first light output;

wherein the first beam splitter module transmits the second transmitted component to the retroreflector module; wherein the retroreflector module retroreflects the second transmitted component back to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the second transmitted component into a third reflected component and a fourth transmitted component; wherein the third reflected component converges to a first visible real image in free space; further comprising a second light source and a second beam splitter module, the second light source oriented at a ninety-degree angle relative to the first light source ; wherein the second beam splitter module is oriented at a ninety-degree angle relative to the first beam splitter module; wherein, prior to reaching the first beam splitter module, the first light output is transmitted in part by the second beam splitter module; wherein the second light source transmits the second light output to the second beam splitter module; wherein the second beam splitter module splits the second light output into a fifth reflected component and a sixth transmitted component of the second light output; wherein the second beam splitter module reflects the fifth reflected component to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the fifth reflected component into a seventh reflected component and an eighth transmitted component; wherein the retroreflector module retroreflects the eighth transmitted component back to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the eighth transmitted component into a ninth reflected component and a tenth transmitted component; wherein the ninth reflected component converges to a second visible real image in free space.

2. The display of claim 1 , wherein the first visible image is a two-dimensional real image.

3. The display of claim 1 , wherein the first light source is a volumetric display; wherein the first visible image is a three-dimensional real image.

The display of claim 3 , wherein the volumetric display has first and second layers; wherein the three-dimensional real image comprises a first two-dimensional image in a first plane and a second two-dimensional image in a second plane parallel to and separated by a non-zero distance from the first plane.

The display of claim 1 , wherein the first light source comprises a moving two-dimensional display resulting in display of, at a first time and position, a first two-dimensional image, and, at a second time and position, a second two-dimensional image; wherein the first and second positions are separated by a non-zero distance; wherein the first and second two-dimensional images are perceived as a single three-dimensional image.

The display of claim 1 , wherein the first light source is separated from the first beam splitter module by a first distance; wherein the second light source is separated from the second beam splitter module by a second distance different from the first distance, resulting in a non-zero separation between the first and second visible real images.

7. The display of claim 1 , wherein the first beam splitter module transmits and reflects equal power.

8. The display of claim 1 , wherein the retroreflector module comprises a cat's eye retroreflector array.

9. The display of claim 1 , wherein the retroreflector module comprises a dihedral corner reflecting array.

10. The display of claim 1 , wherein the retroreflector module comprises a microlens array that increases focusing performance of the retroreflector module; wherein the microlens array comprises structures perpendicular to the retroreflector module that block errant reflections.

11. The display of claim 1 , further comprising a transparent assistant display positioned between the first visible real image and the first beam splitter module.

12. The display of claim 1 , further comprising a transparent assistant display positioned between the first visible real image and the first beam splitter module.

13. A retroreflecting display comprising:

a first light source that generates a first light output;

a first beam splitter module; and

a retroreflector module opposite the first light source;

wherein the first light source transmits the first light output to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the first light output into a first reflected component and a second transmitted component of the first light output; wherein the first beam splitter module transmits the second transmitted component to the retroreflector module; wherein the retroreflector module retroreflects the second transmitted component back to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the second transmitted component into a third reflected component and a fourth transmitted component; wherein the third reflected component converges to a first visible real image in free space; wherein the first beam splitter module comprises a reflective polarizer, a quarter waveplate adjacent the reflective polarizer, a linear polarizer adjacent the quarter waveplate, and an anti-reflective coating adjacent the linear polarizer.

14. A retroreflecting display comprising:

a first light source that generates a first light output;

a first beam splitter module; and

a retroreflector module opposite the first light source;

wherein the first light source transmits the first light output to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the first light output into a first reflected component and a second transmitted component of the first light output; wherein the first beam splitter module transmits the second transmitted component to the retroreflector module; wherein the retroreflector module retroreflects the second transmitted component back to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the second transmitted component into a third reflected component and a fourth transmitted component; wherein the third reflected component converges to a first visible real image in free space; wherein the first beam splitter module comprises a first non-polarizing beamsplitter, a first linear polarizer adjacent the first non-polarizing beamsplitter; a second non-polarizing beamsplitter adjacent the first linear polarizer; a quarter waveplate adjacent the second non-polarizing beamsplitter, a second linear polarizer adjacent the quarter waveplate, and an anti-reflective coating adjacent the second linear polarizer.

15. A retroreflecting display comprising:

a first light source that generates a first light output;

a first beam splitter module; and

a retroreflector module oriented at ninety degrees relative to the first light source;

wherein the first light source transmits the first light output to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the first light output into a first reflected component and a second transmitted component of the first light output; wherein the first beam splitter module reflects the first reflected component to the retroreflector module; wherein the retroreflector module retroreflects the first reflected component back to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the first reflected component into a third reflected component and a fourth transmitted component; wherein the fourth transmitted component converges to a first visible real image in free space; wherein the first beam splitter module comprises a reflective polarizer, a quarter waveplate adjacent the reflective polarizer, a linear polarizer adjacent the quarter waveplate, and an anti-reflective coating adjacent the linear polarizer.

16. The display of claim 15 , wherein the first visible image is a two-dimensional real image.

17. The display of claim 15 , wherein the light source is a volumetric display; wherein the first visible image is a three-dimensional real image.

18. The display of claim 17 , wherein the volumetric display has first and second layers; wherein the three-dimensional real image comprises a first two-dimensional image in a first plane and a second two-dimensional image in a second plane parallel to and separated by a non-zero distance from the first plane.

19. The display of claim 15 , wherein the light source comprises a moving two-dimensional display resulting in display of, at a first time and position, a first two-dimensional image, and, at a second time and position, a second two-dimensional image; wherein the first and second positions are separated by a non-zero distance; wherein the first and second two-dimensional images are perceived as a single three-dimensional image.

20. The display of claim 15 , wherein the first beam splitter module transmits and reflects equal power.

21. The display of claim 15 , wherein the retroreflector module comprises a cat's eye retroreflector array.

22. The display of claim 15 , wherein the retroreflector module comprises a dihedral corner reflecting array.

23. The display of claim 15 , wherein the retroreflector module comprises a microlens array that increases focusing performance of the retroreflector module; wherein the microlens array comprises structures perpendicular to the retroreflector module that block errant reflections.

24. A retroreflecting display comprising:

a first light source that generates a first light output;

a first beam splitter module; and

a retroreflector module oriented at ninety degrees relative to the first light source;

wherein the first light source transmits the first light output to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the first light output into a first reflected component and a second transmitted component of the first light output; wherein the first beam splitter module reflects the first reflected component to the retroreflector module; wherein the retroreflector module retroreflects the first reflected component back to the first beam splitter module; wherein the first beam splitter module splits the first reflected component into a third reflected component and a fourth transmitted component; wherein the fourth transmitted component converges to a first visible real image in free space; wherein the first beam splitter module comprises a first non-polarizing beamsplitter, a first linear polarizer adjacent the first non-polarizing beamsplitter; a second non-polarizing beamsplitter adjacent the first linear polarizer; a quarter waveplate adjacent the second non-polarizing beamsplitter, a second linear polarizer adjacent the quarter waveplate, and an anti-reflective coating adjacent the second linear polarizer.
