Abstract

In particular embodiments, a system for managing a virtualization environment includes host machines, each of the host machines including a hypervisor, user virtual machines (UVMs) and a virtual machine controller. The virtualization environment also includes virtual disks comprising a plurality of storage devices, and being accessible by the virtual machine controllers. The virtual machine controllers conduct I/O transactions with the virtual disks. The system stores an entity-relationship graph representing elements in the virtualization environment. Each of the elements is represented by an entity-type node in the entity-relationship graph, and relationships between the elements are represented by edges between the nodes.

Claims (44)

1. A system for managing clustered systems in a virtualization environment, the system comprising:

a plurality of host machines, wherein each of the host machines comprises a hypervisor, one or more user virtual machines (UVMs) and a virtual machine controller;

one or more virtual disks comprising a plurality of storage devices, the one or more virtual disks being accessible by the virtual machine controllers, wherein the virtual machine controllers conduct I/O transactions with the one or more virtual disks,

wherein the system is further operable to:

store an entity-relationship graph representing elements in the virtualization environment, wherein each of the elements is represented by an entity-type node in the entity-relationship graph, and wherein relationships between the elements are represented by edges between the nodes; and

transform schemas of a plurality of entity databases in the virtualization environment into a unified schema having virtualization environment information by:

converting entity identifiers of entity data in the plurality of entity databases into globally unique identifiers;

re-naming attributes in the plurality of entity databases according to the unified schema; and

converting attributes of the plurality of entity databases to metrics to reduce needed fail-safe updates.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system transforms schemas of each of the plurality of entity databases by suppressing entity updates while allowing metrics data into the entity database.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the activity-type nodes comprises an action-type node, an alert-type node, a metric-type node, or an attributes-type node.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the action-type node comprises information associated with a create action, a power-off action, a clone action, or a migrate action.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the alert-type node comprises information associated with a CPU alert.

6. The system of claim 3 , wherein the metric-type node comprises time series data.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of entity databases include attributes that have fail-safe guarantees.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system transforms schemas of each of the plurality of entity databases by suppressing entity updates when data is received by a specific version of software.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the entity database includes attributes that define a parent-child relationship.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the entity-relationship graph further comprises one or more child entity-type nodes associated with at least one of the entity-type nodes, wherein the one or more child entity-type nodes inherit at least one property from the corresponding entity-type node.

11. A computer-implemented method for managing clustered systems in a virtualization environment, comprising:

storing an entity-relationship graph representing elements in the virtualization environment, wherein each of the elements is represented by an entity-type node in the entity-relationship graph, and wherein relationships between the elements are represented by edges between the nodes, and

transforming schemas of a plurality of entity databases in the virtualization environment into a unified schema having virtualization environment information by:

converting entity identifiers of entity data in the plurality of entity databases into globally unique identifiers;

re-naming attributes in the plurality of entity databases according to the unified schema; and

converting attributes of the plurality of entity databases to metrics to reduce needed fail-safe updates,

wherein the virtualization environment comprises:

a plurality of host machines, wherein each of the host machines comprises a hypervisor, one or more user virtual machines (UVMs) and a virtual machine controller;

one or more virtual disks comprising a plurality of storage devices, the one or more virtual disks being accessible by the virtual machine controllers, wherein the virtual machine controllers conduct I/O transactions with the one or more virtual disks.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the entity-relationship graph further comprises one or more activity-type nodes, each being associated with at least one of the entity-type nodes.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the activity-type nodes comprises an action-type node, an alert-type node, a metric-type node, or an attributes-type node.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the entity-type nodes comprises: a multi-cluster-type node, a cluster-type node, a host-type node, a virtual-machine-type node, a virtual-disk-type node, a protection-domain-type node, a container-type node, a network-interface-card-type node, a disk-type node, or a storage-pool-type node.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein a relationship between elements comprises a parent-child relationship.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the entity-relationship graph further comprises one or more child entity-type nodes associated with at least one of the entity-type nodes, wherein the one or more child entity-type nodes inherit at least one property from the corresponding entity-type node.

17. One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying software for managing a virtualization environment, the software being operable when executed to:

store an entity-relationship graph representing elements in a virtualization environment, wherein each of the elements is represented by an entity-type node in the entity-relationship graph, and wherein relationships between the elements are represented by edges between the nodes, and

transform schemas of a plurality of entity databases in the virtualization environment into a unified schema having virtualization environment information by:

converting entity identifiers of entity data in the plurality of entity databases into globally unique identifiers;

re-naming attributes in the plurality of entity databases according to the unified schema; and

converting attributes of the plurality of entity databases to metrics to reduce needed fail-safe updates,

wherein the virtualization environment comprises:

a plurality of host machines, wherein each of the host machines comprises a hypervisor, one or more user virtual machines (UVMs) and a virtual machine controller;

one or more virtual disks comprising a plurality of storage devices, the one or more virtual disks being accessible by the virtual machine controllers, wherein the virtual machine controllers conduct I/O transactions with the one or more virtual disks.

18. The storage media of claim 17 , wherein the entity-relationship graph further comprises one or more activity-type nodes, each being associated with at least one of the entity-type nodes.

19. The storage media of claim 17 , wherein each of the activity-type nodes comprises an action-type node, an alert-type node, a metric-type node, or an attributes-type node.
