Abstract

Polynucleotides and isolated polypeptides, nucleic acid constructs comprising the isolated polynucleotides, transgenic plants expressing same and methods of using same for increasing abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, vigor, oil content, fiber yield, fiber quality, and/or nitrogen use efficiency of a plant are disclosed.

Claims (28)

1. A method of increasing abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, and/or vigor, of a plant, comprising over-expressing within the plant a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 525 and 5796 as compared to a native plant of the same species which is grown under the same growth conditions, wherein said abiotic stress is salinity stress, thereby increasing the abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, and/or vigor of the plant.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide is set forth by SEQ ID NO: 525.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide is encoded by a polynucleotide which comprises the nucleic acid sequence set forth by SEQ ID NO: 321, 52 or 1109, or a codon-optimized sequence thereof.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide is encoded by a polynucleotide selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 321, 52 or 1109.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising growing the plant over-expressing said polypeptide under the abiotic stress.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the plant over-expressing said polypeptide for an increased abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, and/or vigor as compared to a native plant of the same species which is grown under the same growth conditions, wherein said abiotic stress is salinity stress.

7. A method of producing seeds of a crop, comprising:

(a) selecting a parent plant over-expressing a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 525 and 5796 as compared to a native plant of the same species which is grown under the same growth conditions, said parent plant exhibits an increased trait selected from the group consisting of: increased abiotic stress tolerance, increased yield, increased biomass, increased growth rate, increased and vigor, as compared to a native plant which is grown under the same growth conditions, wherein said abiotic stress is salinity stress, and;

(b) growing a seed producing plant from said parent plant resultant of step (a), wherein said seed producing plant which over-expresses said polypeptide has said increased trait, and;

(c) producing seeds from said seed producing plant resultant of step (b),

thereby producing seeds of the crop.

8. A nucleic acid construct comprising an isolated polynucleotide comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 525 and 5796 operably linked to a heterologous plant promoter for directing transcription of said nucleic acid sequence in a plant cell.

9. The nucleic acid construct of claim 8 , wherein said nucleic acid sequence encoding said polypeptide is set forth by SEQ ID NO: 321, 52 or 1109, or a codon-optimized sequence thereof.

10. The nucleic acid construct of claim 8 , wherein said nucleic acid sequence is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 321, 52 and 1109.

11. The nucleic acid construct of claim 8 , wherein said promoter is a constitutive promoter.

12. The nucleic acid construct of claim 8 , wherein said promoter is a tissue specific promoter.

13. The nucleic acid construct of claim 8 , wherein said promoter is an inducible promoter.

14. A method of growing a crop comprising growing a crop plant transformed with the nucleic acid construct of claim 8 , wherein said crop plant is derived from parent plants that have been transformed to express said polypeptide and that have been selected for at least one trait selected from the group consisting of: an increased abiotic stress tolerance, an increased yield, an increased biomass, an increased growth rate, and/or an increased vigor as compared to a native plant which is grown under the same growth conditions, and said crop plant which comprises said nucleic acid construct having said increased abiotic stress tolerance, said increased yield, said increased biomass, said increased growth rate, said increased and/or vigor, wherein said abiotic stress is salinity stress, thereby growing the crop.

15. A plant cell transformed with the nucleic acid construct of claim 8 .

16. The plant cell of claim 15 , wherein said plant cell forms part of a plant.

17. A transgenic plant comprising the nucleic acid construct of claim 8 .

18. The method of claim 7 , wherein said amino acid sequence is set forth by SEQ ID NO: 525.

19. The method of claim 7 , wherein said polypeptide is encoded by a polynucleotide which comprises the nucleic acid sequence set forth by SEQ ID NO: 321, 52 or 1109, or a codon-optimized sequence thereof.

20. The method of claim 7 , wherein said polypeptide is encoded by a polynucleotide selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 321, 52 or 1109.

21. The method of claim 7 , wherein said polypeptide is encoded by the polynucleotide set forth by SEQ ID NO: 321.

22. The nucleic acid construct of claim 8 , wherein said amino acid sequence is set forth by SEQ ID NO: 525.

23. A plant cell transformed with the nucleic acid construct of claim 22 .

24. A transgenic plant comprising the nucleic acid construct of claim 22 .
