Abstract

An image of a check that is in the field of view of a camera is monitored prior to the image of the check being captured. The camera is associated with a mobile device. When the image of the check in the field of view passes monitoring criteria, an image may be taken by the camera and provided from the mobile device to a financial institution. The image capture may be performed automatically as soon as the image of the check is determined to pass the monitoring criteria. The check may be deposited in a user's bank account based on the image. Any technique for sending the image to the financial institution may be used. Feedback may be provided to the user of the camera regarding the image of the check in the field of view.

Claims (57)

1. A server computing device comprising:

a network interface configured to receive a digital image depicting a document captured by an image capture device included on a mobile computing device;

a processor in communication with the network interface, the processor configured to:

analyze the document depicted in the digital image with respect to a same monitoring criterion previously applied by the image capture device, wherein the monitoring criterion monitored the document in a field of view of the image capture device;

determine whether the document depicted in the digital image satisfies the monitoring criterion;

when the document depicted in the digital image is determined not to satisfy the monitoring criterion, control the network interface to transmit a feedback message to the mobile computing device, wherein the feedback message includes an instruction for satisfying the monitoring criterion;

when the monitoring criterion is determined to be satisfied, implement image processing on the digital image to obtain target information related to the document depicted in the digital image.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring criterion comprises monitoring of the document in the field of view of the image capture device to determine whether a corner of the document depicted in the digital image is detected in the field of view of the image capture device.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feedback message is executable by the mobile computing device to display the instruction for satisfying the monitoring criterion on a display screen of the mobile computing device, wherein the written instruction requests a user to position the document in a field of view of the image capture device.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feedback message is executable by the mobile computing device to output an audio signal presenting the instruction for satisfying the monitoring criterion through a speaker of the mobile computing device.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the digital image is part of a video stream received from the mobile computing device; and

wherein the processor is configured to:

analyze the document depicted in frames comprising the video stream with respect to the monitoring criterion;

determine whether the document depicted in the frames satisfies the monitoring criterion; and

when the document depicted in the frames is determined to satisfy the monitoring criterion, control the network interface to transmit an image capture command to the mobile computing device for controlling the image capture device to capture a still image.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

process a check deposit based on the target information obtained from the document.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the target information includes an account number related to a financial institution.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein to analyze the document depicted in the digital image with respect to the monitoring criterion, the processor is further configured to:

measure a distance from an edge of the depicted in the digital image to an edge of a field of view of the image capture device; and

compare the distance to a predetermined value to determine whether skew is present in the digital image.

9. A method for monitoring a digital image, the method comprising:

receiving, through a network interface, a digital image depicting a document captured by an image capture device included on a mobile computing device;

analyzing, by a processor, the document depicted in the digital image with respect to a same monitoring criterion previously applied by the image capture device, wherein the monitoring criterion monitored the document in a field of view of the image capture device;

determining, by the processor, whether the document depicted in the digital image satisfies the monitoring criterion;

when the document depicted in the digital image is determined not to satisfy the monitoring criterion, controlling the network interface to transmit a feedback message to the mobile computing device, wherein the feedback message includes an instruction for satisfying the monitoring criterion;

when the monitoring criterion is determined to be satisfied, implementing image processing on the digital image to obtain target information related to the document depicted in the digital image.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the monitoring criterion comprises monitoring of the document in the field of view of the image capture device to determine whether a corner of the document depicted in the digital image is detected in the field of view of the image capture device.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the feedback message is executable by the mobile computing device to display the instruction for satisfying the monitoring criterion on a display screen of the mobile computing device, wherein the written instruction requests a user to position the document in a field of view of the image capture device.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the feedback message is executable by the mobile computing device to output an audio signal presenting the instruction for satisfying the monitoring criterion through a speaker of the mobile computing device.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the digital image is part of a video stream received from the mobile computing device; and

wherein the method further comprises:

analyzing, by the processor, the document depicted in frames comprising the video stream with respect to the monitoring criterion;

determining, by the processor, whether the document depicted in the frames satisfies the monitoring criterion; and

when the document depicted in the frames is determined to satisfy the monitoring criterion, controlling the network interface to transmit an image capture command to the mobile computing device for controlling the image capture device to capture a still image.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

processing, by the processor, a check deposit based on the target information obtained from the document.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the target information includes an account number related to a financial institution.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein analyzing the document depicted in the digital image with respect to the monitoring criterion, comprises:

measuring a distance from an edge of the depicted in the digital image to an edge of a field of view of the image capture device; and

comparing the distance to a predetermined value to determine whether skew is present in the digital image.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising computer-readable instructions for analyzing a document that, when executed by a processor of a server computing device, cause the processor to:

receive a digital image depicting a document captured by an image capture device included on a mobile computing device;

analyze the document depicted in the digital image with respect to a same monitoring criterion previously applied by the image capture device, wherein the monitoring criterion monitored the document in a field of view of the image capture device;

determine whether the document depicted in the digital image satisfies the monitoring criterion;

when the document depicted in the digital image is determined not to satisfy the monitoring criterion, control the network interface to transmit a feedback message to the mobile computing device, wherein the feedback message includes an instruction for satisfying the monitoring criterion;

when the monitoring criterion is determined to be satisfied, implement image processing on the digital image to obtain target information related to the document depicted in the digital image.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the digital image is part of a video stream received from the mobile computing device; and

wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium further comprises computer-readable instructions for analyzing the document that, when executed by the processor of the server computing device, cause the processor to:
