Abstract

A multi-port memory device in communication with a controller includes a memory array for storing data provided by the controller, a first port coupled to the controller via a first controller channel, a second port coupled to the controller via a second controller channel, a processor, and a processor memory local to the processor, wherein the processor memory has stored thereon instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to: enable data transfer through the first port and/or the second port in response to a first control signal received from the first controller channel and/or a second control signal received from second controller channel, decode at least one of the received first and second control signals to identify a data operation to perform, the identified data operation including a read or write operation from or to the memory array, and execute the identified data operation.

Claims (28)

1. A multi-port memory device in communication with a controller, the multi-port memory device comprising:

a memory array for storing data provided by the controller;

a first port coupled to the controller via a first controller channel;

a second port coupled to the controller via a second controller channel;

a processor; and

a processor memory local to the processor, wherein the processor memory has stored thereon instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

enable data transfer through the first port and the second port in response to a first control signal received from the first controller channel and a second control signal received from the second controller channel;

decode the received first and second control signals to identify a first data transfer request and a second data transfer request to perform, each of the identified first and second data transfer requests comprising a read or write operation from or to the memory array;

determine that a memory access of the second data transfer request overlaps that of the first data transfer request;

execute the identified first data transfer request; and

while engaged in execution of the first data transfer request, without blocking access through the second port, queue the second data transfer request in a buffer internal to the multi-port memory device until after a completion of execution of the first data transfer request.

2. The multi-port memory device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to:

transmit a first status signal to the controller via the first port and a second status signal to the controller via the second port, in response to enabling data transfer through the first port and/or the second port, the first and second status signals indicating a busy state of each of the first and second ports.

3. The multi-port memory device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to:

transmit a first status signal to the controller via the first port, in response to enabling data transfer through the first port; and

transmit a second status signal to the controller via the second port, in response to enabling data transfer through the second port.

4. A method of performing data transfer in a multi-port memory device in communication with a controller of a storage node, the method comprising:

receiving, by a processor of the multi-port memory device, a first control signal through a first port of the multi-port memory device that is coupled to the controller via a first controller channel, the first control signal indicating a first data transfer request from the controller of the storage node;

receiving, by the processor, a second control signal through a second port of the multi-port memory device that is coupled to the controller via a second controller channel, the second control signal indicating a second data transfer request from the controller of the storage node;

enabling, by the processor, a first data transfer through the first port;

decoding, by the processor, the first control signal to identify the first data transfer request;

decoding, by the processor, the second control signal to identify the second data transfer request;

determining, by the processor, that a memory access of the second data transfer request overlaps that of the first data transfer request;

initiating, by the processor, the first data transfer to or from a memory array of the multi-port memory device according to the identified first data transfer request; and

while engaged in processing of the first data transfer request, without blocking access through the second port, queuing, by the processor, the second data transfer request in a buffer internal to the multi-port memory device until after a completion of execution of the first data transfer request.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising transmitting, by the processor, first and second status signals from the first and second ports indicating a busy state.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising transmitting, by the processor, a first status signal from the first port indicating a busy state and a second status signal from the second port indicating a ready state.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein determining that the memory access of the second data transfer request overlaps that of the first data transfer request comprises determining, by the processor, that the first and second data transfer requests access a same memory page of the memory array.
