Abstract

A metal or metal-ion battery composition is provided that comprises anode and cathode electrodes along with an electrolyte ionically coupling the anode and the cathode. At least one of the electrodes includes active material particles provided to store and release ions during battery operation. Each of the active material particles includes internal pores configured to accommodate volume changes in the active material during the storing and releasing of the ions. The electrolyte comprises a solid electrolyte ionically interconnecting the active material particles.

Claims (34)

1. A metal or metal-ion battery composition, comprising:

anode and cathode electrodes,

wherein at least one of the electrodes includes active material particles comprising active material that is provided to store and release ions during battery operation,

each of the active material particles including internal pores configured to accommodate volume changes in the active material during the storing and releasing of the ions; and

an electrolyte in contact with and ionically coupling the anode electrode and the cathode electrode,

wherein the electrolyte is a composite electrolyte comprising a first electrolyte infiltrating the anode electrode and a second electrolyte infiltrating the cathode electrode without an interlayer that comprises a liquid or solid electrolyte being arranged between the first and second electrolytes,

wherein at least one of the first or second electrolytes is a solid electrolyte,

wherein the first electrolyte is a first type of electrolyte and the second electrolyte is a second type of electrolyte that is different than the first type of electrolyte, and

wherein at least one of the first or second electrolytes ionically interconnects the active material particles.

2. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein each of the active material particles comprises a porous, electrically-conductive scaffolding matrix within which the active material is disposed, wherein the scaffolding matrix structurally supports the active material, electrically interconnects the active material, and accommodates the changes in volume of the active material.

3. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein each of the active material particles comprises a dendritic or curved, electrically-conducting backbone configured to structurally support the active material.

4. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein both the anode and the cathode electrodes include the active material particles.

5. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein the volume changes in the active material during the storing and releasing of the ions is more than about 10%.

6. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein one of the first or second electrolytes forms a coating on the active material particles, and wherein a third electrolyte is disposed on the coating on the active material particles.

7. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein the solid electrolyte comprises (i) an Li 2 S-containing solid electrolyte material, (ii) a garnet-type solid electrolyte material, or (iii) a mixture of the Li 2 S-containing solid electrolyte material and/or the garnet-type solid electrolyte material with a polymer electrolyte.

8. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein the solid electrolyte in the first and/or second electrolytes comprises a melt-infiltration solid electrolyte.

9. The battery composition of claim 1 , further comprising an electrically-conductive matrix disposed throughout the solid electrolyte, whereby additional ion storage in the solid electrolyte is facilitated in proximity of the electrically-conductive matrix.

10. The battery composition of claim 9 , wherein the electrically-conductive matrix forms a structural support for the active material particles.

11. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein each of the active material particles comprises a shell at least partially encasing the active material and the internal pores, the shell being substantially permeable to the ions stored and released by the active material.

12. The battery composition of claim 11 , wherein the internal pores are formed as part of the shell.

13. The battery composition of claim 11 , wherein the internal pores are formed inside of the shell within the active material.

14. The battery composition of claim 1 , wherein the first electrolyte corresponds to a first solid electrolyte.

15. The battery composition of claim 14 , wherein the second electrolyte is a liquid or polymer electrolyte.

16. The battery composition of claim 14 , wherein the second electrolyte is a second solid electrolyte.

17. The battery composition of claim 16 , wherein one of the first and second solid electrolytes forms a first layer encasing the active material particles and a third solid electrolyte forms a second layer overlaying the first layer.

18. The battery composition of claim 16 , wherein both the anode and the cathode electrodes include the active material particles, and wherein the first solid electrolyte ionically interconnects the active material particles of the anode electrode and the second solid electrolyte ionically interconnects the active material particles of the cathode electrode.

19. A metal or metal-ion battery composition, comprising:

anode and cathode electrodes, wherein at least one of the electrodes includes active material particles comprising active material that is provided to store and release ions during battery operation, each of the active material particles including internal pores configured to accommodate volume changes in the active material during the storing and releasing of the ions;

an electrolyte ionically coupling the anode and the cathode, wherein the electrolyte comprises a solid electrolyte ionically interconnecting the active material particles; and

an electrically-conductive matrix disposed throughout the solid electrolyte, whereby additional ion storage in the solid electrolyte is facilitated in proximity of the electrically-conductive matrix.

20. The battery composition of claim 19 , wherein the electrically-conductive matrix forms a structural support for the active material particles.

21. A metal or metal-ion battery composition, comprising:

anode and cathode electrodes, wherein at least one of the electrodes includes active material particles comprising active material that is provided to store and release ions during battery operation, each of the active material particles including internal pores configured to accommodate volume changes in the active material during the storing and releasing of the ions, wherein each of the active material particles comprises a porous, electrically-conductive scaffolding matrix within which the active material is disposed, wherein the scaffolding matrix structurally supports the active material, electrically interconnects the active material, and accommodates the changes in volume of the active material; and
