Abstract

A surgical instrument includes a housing that supports an elongated shaft. A selectively movable drive rod extends through the elongated shaft and carries a cam pin in a longitudinal direction. An end effector for surgically treating tissue is supported by the elongated shaft and includes upper and lower jaw members pivotally coupled to one another about a pivot axis. The upper jaw member includes a first pair of laterally spaced flanges, and the lower jaw member includes a second pair of laterally spaced flanges defining a camming slot for engaging the cam pin. The flanges are arranged in an offset configuration where one flange of the upper jaw member is positioned on a laterally exterior side of a corresponding flange of the lower jaw member, and the other flange of the upper jaw member is positioned on a laterally interior side of the other flange of the lower jaw member.

Claims (46)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

a drive rod extending from the housing and including a generally u-shaped profile along at least a portion of a length of the drive rod; and

a pair of jaw members, at least one of the pair of jaw members operably coupled to a distal portion of the drive rod by a cam pin, at least one of the jaw members defining a cam slot configured to receive the cam pin such that longitudinal movement of the drive rod translates the cam pin through the cam slot to move at least one of the pair of jaw members relative to the other one of the pair of jaw members.

2. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the drive rod includes the generally u-shaped profile.

3. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , further comprising a knife configured to move longitudinally within the drive rod.

4. The surgical instrument according to claim 3 , wherein the drive rod is configured to guide longitudinal movement of the knife.

5. The surgical instrument according to claim 3 , wherein the distal portion of the drive rod is configured to guide longitudinal movement of the knife.

6. The surgical instrument according to claim 3 , wherein the drive rod includes an overfold configured to guide longitudinal movement of the knife.

7. The surgical instrument according to claim 6 , wherein the distal portion of the drive rod includes the overfold.

8. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of jaw members are arranged in a nestled configuration.

9. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein a first jaw member of the pair of jaw members includes a first pair of laterally spaced flanges and a second jaw member of the pair of jaw members includes a second pair of laterally spaced flanges, the first pair of laterally spaced flanges disposed between the second pair of laterally spaced flanges.

10. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein each of the pair of jaw members includes a curved tissue engaging portion.

11. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , further comprising an elongated shaft coupled to the housing, the drive rod configured to move longitudinally within the elongated shaft.

12. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein each of the pair of jaw members includes a sealing plate coupled thereto configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to tissue.

13. The surgical instrument according to claim 12 , wherein at least one of the pair of jaw members includes a stop member configured to maintain a gap distance between the sealing plates.

14. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the drive rod includes two opposing sidewalls connected by a connector portion to define the generally u-shaped profile.

15. The surgical instrument according to claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of the drive rod includes an overfold that is disposed opposite the connector portion and that extends from one of the two opposing sidewalls.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , further comprising a flange that laterally extends from at least one of the two opposing sidewalls of the drive rod.

17. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

a drive rod extending from the housing and including a generally u-shaped profile along at least a portion of a length of the drive rod;

a pair of jaw members, at least one of the pair of jaw members operably coupled to a distal portion of the drive rod such that longitudinal movement of the drive rod moves at least one of the pair of jaw members relative to the other one of the pair of jaw members;

a knife configured to move longitudinally within the drive rod; and

an overfold disposed along at least a portion of the length of the drive rod and configured to guide longitudinal movement of the knife.

18. The surgical instrument according to claim 17 , wherein the overfold is disposed at the distal portion of the drive rod.

19. The surgical instrument according to claim 17 , wherein the pair of jaw members are arranged in a nestled configuration.

20. The surgical instrument according to claim 17 , wherein a first jaw member of the pair of jaw members includes a first pair of laterally spaced flanges and a second jaw member of the pair of jaw members includes a second pair of laterally spaced flanges, the first pair of laterally spaced flanges disposed between the second pair of laterally spaced flanges.

21. The surgical instrument according to claim 17 , wherein each of the pair of jaw members includes a curved tissue engaging portion.

22. The surgical instrument according to claim 17 , further comprising an elongated shaft coupled to the housing, the drive rod configured to move longitudinally within the elongated shaft.

23. The surgical instrument according to claim 17 , wherein each of the pair of jaw members includes a sealing plate coupled thereto configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to tissue.

24. The surgical instrument according to claim 23 , wherein at least one of the pair of jaw members includes a stop member configured to maintain a gap distance between the sealing plates.

25. The surgical instrument according to claim 17 , wherein the drive rod includes two opposing sidewalls connected by a connector portion to define the generally u-shaped profile.

26. The surgical instrument according to claim 25 , wherein the overfold is disposed opposite the connector portion and extends from one of the two opposing sidewalls.

27. The surgical instrument of claim 25 , further comprising a flange that laterally extends from at least one of the two opposing sidewalls of the drive rod.

28. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

a drive rod extending from the housing and including a generally u-shaped profile along at least a portion of a length of the drive rod, the drive rod including two opposing sidewalls connected by a connector portion to define the generally u-shaped profile;

a pair of jaw members, at least one of the pair of jaw members operably coupled to a distal portion of the drive rod such that longitudinal movement of the drive rod moves at least one of the pair of jaw members relative to the other one of the pair of jaw members; and

an overfold portion disposed opposite the connector portion and extending from one of the two opposing sidewalls.

29. The surgical instrument according to claim 28 , further comprising a flange that laterally extends from at least one of the two opposing sidewalls of the drive rod.

30. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

an elongated shaft coupled to the housing and defining a longitudinal axis;
