Abstract

Medical devices for operating an end effector including a housing, a drive shaft, a drive body and a drive link. The drive shaft is moveable relative to the housing to actuate the end effector. The drive body is operably coupled to the drive shaft. The drive body includes a proximal collar and a distal collar. The drive link includes a proximal cam surface and distal cam surface, and the drive link is operatively coupled to the housing and actuatable to translate the drive shaft with respect to the housing. The proximal cam surface is configured to interface with the proximal collar when the drive link displaces proximally to translate the drive body in a proximal direction, and the distal cam surface is configured to interface with the distal collar when the drive link displaces distally to translate the drive shaft in a distal direction.

Claims (43)

1. A medical device for operating an end effector, the medical device comprising:

a housing that forms at least a portion of a handle;

a drive shaft that is moveable relative to the housing to actuate the end effector;

a drive body operably coupled to the drive shaft, wherein the drive body is configured to translate with respect to the housing, the drive body having a proximal collar and a distal collar; and

a drive link operatively coupled to the housing, the drive link actuatable by an actuator,

wherein the drive link is actuatable to translate the drive shaft with respect to the housing, and wherein the drive link includes a proximal cam surface and a distal cam surface opposite the proximal cam surface,

wherein the proximal cam surface is configured to interface with the proximal collar when the drive link displaces proximally to translate the drive body in a proximal direction,

wherein the distal cam surface is configured to interface with the distal collar when the drive link displaces distally to translate the drive shaft in a distal direction,

wherein the proximal cam surface is defined by a first curvature defined by a first radius with a first center point and the distal cam surface is defined by a second curvature defined by a second radius with a second center point that is the same as the first center point.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second center points are arranged on a common axis that is perpendicular to a plane through a longitudinal axis along which the drive body translates and which intersects the drive link.

3. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the drive link is pivotably coupled to the housing at a pivot axis, and wherein the common axis is parallel to the pivot axis.

4. The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the drive link is pivotably coupled to the housing along a pivot axis, and wherein the common axis is configured to pass below the pivot axis of the drive link.

5. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first radius is equal to the second radius.

6. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first radius is not equal to the second radius.

7. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the drive link comprises a yoke.

8. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the drive link comprises a yoke having a first leg spaced apart from a second leg, and wherein the drive body includes a minor diameter surface extending between the proximal collar and the distal collar, and wherein the minor diameter surface is configured to be received between the first leg and the second leg.

9. The medical device of claim 8 , wherein a distal face of the proximal collar and a proximal face of the distal collar are parallel.

10. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the drive body comprises a spool portion including the proximal collar, a minor diameter surface and the distal collar.

11. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein a distal face of the proximal collar and a proximal face of the distal collar are planar.

12. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the drive link is pivotably coupled to the housing along a pivot axis, and wherein the first and second center points are arranged on a common that axis passes through a plane perpendicular to a translation axis of the drive body and which passes through the pivot axis of the drive link.

13. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the drive link is pivotably coupled to the housing, and wherein the first and second center points are arranged on a common axis that is configured to pass through an axis of translation of the drive body.

14. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the drive link is pivotably coupled to the housing, and wherein the first and second center points are arranged on a common axis that is configured to pass through an axis of translation of the drive body twice.

15. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein a distal face of the proximal collar contacts the proximal cam surface at a position tangent to the proximal cam surface over a range of motion of the drive link.

16. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein a proximal face of the distal collar contacts the distal cam surface at a position tangent to the distal cam surface over a range of motion of the drive link.

17. The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising jaws coupled to a distal end of the drive shaft and wherein the jaws are configured to be displaced from an open position to a closed position.

18. The medical device of claim 17 , wherein the first and second center points are arranged on a common axis that is configured to pass through a longitudinal axis of translation of the drive body twice during displacement of the jaws from the open position to the closed position.

19. A medical device comprising:

a housing;

a drive link pivotably coupled to the housing at a drive link pivot axis, the drive link having a drive surface on a face; and

a drive body configured to translate relative to the housing, the drive body having a face to receive the drive surface,

wherein the drive surface is defined by a curvature defined by a radius with a center point, the drive surface includes a distal cam surface, the drive link has a proximal cam surface opposite the distal cam surface to interact with a second face of the drive body, the proximal cam surface is defined by another curvature defined by another radius with the center point, and when the drive link passes through its range of travel, the center point passes through, at least one of:

a plane perpendicular to a translation axis of the drive body and which passes through the drive link pivot axis; and

a longitudinal axis of translation of the drive body.

20. The medical device of claim 19 , wherein the center point is configured to pass through the translation axis of the drive body twice when the drive link passes through its range of travel.

21. A medical device comprising:

a housing;

a drive link pivotably coupled to the housing at a drive link pivot axis, the drive link having a drive surface on a face; and

a drive body configured to translate relative to the housing, the drive body having a face to receive the drive surface,

wherein:
