Abstract

Various devices related to a therapeutic ultrasound device for use during a medical procedure to cauterize tissue are disclosed. The high intensity focused ultrasound device can include a transducer for producing high intensity focused ultrasound. The transducer includes a shell configured to receive an acoustic stack. The acoustic stack includes a piezoelectric layer, a matching layer, and a plurality of electrodes. The transducer includes an air-filled pocket formed between the inner surface of the shell and the piezoelectric layer of the acoustic stack, wherein the air-filled pocket is configured to ensure high efficiency of the transducer.

Claims (40)

1. A therapeutic ultrasound transducer comprising:

an acoustic stack comprising:

a piezoelectric layer,

a matching layer, and

at least one electrode located between at least the piezoelectric layer and the matching layer; and

a shell having an inner surface, wherein the inner surface defines an opening that receives the acoustic stack,

wherein the acoustic stack and the inner surface of the shell form a pocket between the piezoelectric layer of the acoustic stack and the inner surface of the shell,

wherein the inner surface of the shell further comprises a lining, wherein the lining electrically isolates the inside surface of the shell from the acoustic stack, and

wherein the therapeutic ultrasound transducer is configured to generate at least about 200 Watts of power and to operate at a frequency of between about 1 MHz and about 10 MHz.

2. The therapeutic ultrasound transducer of claim 1 , wherein the lining comprises a heat resistant polymer.

3. The therapeutic ultrasound transducer of claim 1 , wherein the therapeutic ultrasound transducer has a width between about 3 millimeters and about 15 millimeters.

4. The therapeutic ultrasound transducer of claim 1 , wherein the therapeutic ultrasound transducer has a length between about 5 millimeters and about 15 millimeters.

5. The therapeutic ultrasound transducer of claim 1 , wherein the matching layer has a surface that is at least one of nonstick or biocompatible.

6. The therapeutic ultrasound transducer of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic stack further comprises an adhesive layer that attaches the piezoelectric layer and the matching layer.

7. The therapeutic ultrasound transducer of claim 1 , wherein the pocket is filled with a gas.

8. The therapeutic ultrasound transducer of claim 1 , wherein the piezoelectric layer comprises a plurality of slots, wherein the plurality of slots are configured to provide a uniform acoustic field.

9. A transducer comprising:

an acoustic stack comprising:

a piezoelectric layer,

a matching layer, and

at least one electrode located between at least the piezoelectric layer and the matching layer; and

a shell having an inner surface, wherein the inner surface defines an opening that receives the acoustic stack,

wherein the acoustic stack and the inner surface of the shell form a pocket between the piezoelectric layer of the acoustic stack and the inner surface of the shell,

wherein the inner surface of the engagement assembly further comprises a lining, wherein the lining electrically isolates the inside surface of the shell from the acoustic stack, and

wherein the transducer is configured to provide therapeutic ultrasound directed to a target.

10. The transducer of claim 9 , wherein the transducer is configured to generate at least about 200 Watts of power.

11. The transducer of claim 9 , wherein the transducer is configured to operate at a frequency of between about 1 MHz and about 10 MHz.

12. The transducer of claim 9 , wherein the matching layer has a surface that is at least one of nonstick or biocompatible.

13. The transducer of claim 9 , wherein the acoustic stack further comprises an adhesive layer that attaches the piezoelectric layer and the matching layer.

14. A transducer configured to generate therapeutic ultrasound comprising:

an acoustic stack comprising:

a piezoelectric layer,

a matching layer adhered to the piezoelectric layer,

at least one electrode located between at least the piezoelectric layer and the matching layer; and

a shell having an inner surface, wherein the inner surface defines an opening that receives the acoustic stack, and wherein the inner surface of the shell includes a lining that isolates the inside surface of the shell from the acoustic stack,

wherein the acoustic stack and the inner surface of the shell form a pocket filled with gas between the piezoelectric layer of the acoustic stack and the inner surface of the shell.

15. The transducer of claim 14 , wherein the transducer is configured to generate at least about 200 Watts of power.

16. The transducer of claim 14 , wherein the transducer is configured to operate at a frequency of between about 1 MHz and about 10 MHz.

17. The transducer of claim 14 , wherein the inner surface of the first body portion further comprises a lining, wherein the lining electrically isolates the inside surface of the shell from the acoustic stack.

18. The transducer of claim 14 , wherein the matching layer has a surface that is at least one of nonstick or biocompatible.
