Abstract

An implant assembly including a curved mesh cage and angled endplates. The implant assembly offers a safe and secure mesh cage while providing lordosis/kyphosis angling at the center of the construct instead of at the end of the cage only. One or more angled endplates may be included which allow the surgeon to make a construct unique to the patient's anatomy. The endplates press-fit into corresponding holes in the mesh cage for a secure fit.

Claims (28)

1. An implant assembly for engagement between a first vertebral body and a second vertebral body, said implant assembly comprising:

a tubular cage having an outer surface and an inner surface, wherein the cage extends from a first end to a second end, contains a plurality of openings extending from the outer surface to the inner surface, and wherein a longitudinal axis of the cage is curved;

a first endplate configured to engage the first vertebral body and press-fit into the first end; and

a second endplate configured to engage the second vertebral body and press-fit into the second end,

wherein the first endplate and second endplate each comprise one or more tabs configured to limit torsional movement of the first endplate and the second endplate relative to the cage, and

wherein the one or more tabs of the first endplate extend towards the second endplate and the one or more tabs of the second endplate extend towards the first endplate.

2. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cage, the first endplate, and the second endplate have a same cross-sectional configuration.

3. The implant assembly of claim 2 , wherein the cross-sectional configuration is selected from circular, oval and kidney shaped.

4. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cage has a length selected from a plurality of pre-defined lengths or is cut to length.

5. The implant assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of openings are radial and open into a hollow passage traversing the cage along the longitudinal axis.

6. The implant assembly of claim 5 , wherein the first endplate has an upper surface and a lower surface, wherein the lower surface of the first endplate is configured to be tapered to engage the first end of the cage.

7. The implant of claim 6 , wherein the upper surface of the first endplate is configured to have at least one protrusion to engage the first vertebral body.

8. The implant assembly of claim 7 , wherein the second endplate has an upper surface and a lower surface, wherein the upper surface of the second endplate is configured to be tapered to engage the second end of the cage.

9. The implant of claim 8 , wherein the lower surface of the second endplate is configured to have at least one protrusion to engage the second vertebral body.

10. An implant assembly for engagement between a first vertebral body and a second vertebral body, said implant assembly comprising:

a mesh cage having a passageway extending from a first end of the cage to a second end of the cage, wherein a plurality of radial openings are disposed through an outer surface of the mesh cage into the passageway;

a first endplate having a first tapered surface configured to press-fit into the first end; and

a second endplate having a second tapered surface configured to press-fit into the second end,

wherein the first endplate and second endplate each comprise one or more tabs configured to limit torsional movement of the first endplate and the second endplate relative to the cage, and

wherein the one or more tabs of the first endplate extend towards the second endplate and the one or more tabs of the second endplate extend towards the first endplate.

11. The implant assembly of claim 10 , wherein the cage, the first endplate, and the second endplate have a same cross-sectional configuration.

12. The implant assembly of claim 11 , wherein the cross-sectional configuration is selected from circular, oval and kidney shaped.

13. The implant assembly of claim 10 , wherein the cage has a length selected from a plurality of pre-defined lengths or is cut to length.

14. The implant assembly of claim 10 , wherein the cage is curved along a longitudinal axis of the implant assembly.

15. The implant assembly of claim 14 , wherein the first endplate has an upper surface and a lower surface, wherein the lower surface of the first endplate is configured to be tapered to engage the first end of the cage.

16. The implant of claim 15 , wherein the upper surface of the first endplate is configured to have at least one protrusion to engage the first vertebral body.

17. The implant assembly of claim 16 , wherein the second endplate has an upper surface and a lower surface, wherein the upper surface of the second endplate is configured to be tapered to engage the second end of the cage.

18. The implant of claim 17 , wherein the lower surface of the second endplate is configured to have at least one protrusion to engage the second vertebral body.
