Abstract

A clot retrieval device ( 9501 ) for removing clot from a blood vessel comprises an inner elongate body ( 9503 ) and an outer elongate body ( 9504 ) at least partially overlying the inner elongate body ( 9503 ). The device also comprises an elongate member or shaft ( 9502 ) having a proximal end which extends exterior of a patient so that a user can retrieve the stent-basket device and captured clot by retracting the shaft ( 9502 ). The outer elongate body ( 9504 ) and the inner elongate body ( 9503 ) are connected to the distal end of the shaft ( 9502 ) and are expandable relative to the shaft ( 9502 ) from a collapsed delivery configuration to an expanded deployed configuration. The outer elongate body ( 9504 ) is expandable relative to the inner elongate body ( 9503 ) to a radial extent which is greater than the radial extent of the inner body ( 9503 ) in the deployed configuration.

Claims (48)

1. A method of removing clot from a vessel, the method comprising:

delivering a clot retrieval device across the clot, wherein the clot retrieval device includes:

an inner body having a collapsed delivery configuration and an expanded deployed configuration; and

an outer body extending along a longitudinal axis and at least partially overlying the inner body, wherein the outer body comprises

a first scaffolding section,

a second scaffolding section connected distal of the first scaffolding section by a hinged strut element, and

a clot inlet mouth between the first and second scaffolding section;

the first and second scaffolding sections of the outer body being expandable to a radial extent which is greater than the radial extent of the inner body in the deployed configuration to define a clot reception space between the inner body and the separate first and second scaffolding sections;

expanding the clot retrieval device so that one or both of the first scaffolding section and the second scaffolding section longitudinally urge at least a portion of the clot through the clot inlet mouth into the clot reception space; and

inhibiting migration of the clot into the inner body to allow a flow of blood through the inner body in the expanded deployed configuration.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the outer body further includes a third scaffolding section positioned between the first scaffolding section and the second scaffolding section, wherein the third scaffolding is connected distal of the first scaffolding section by a second hinged strut element.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the clot inlet mouth is a first clot inlet mouth, the first clot inlet mouth being positioned between the first scaffolding section and the third scaffolding section, the outer body further defining a second clot inlet mouth positioned between the third scaffolding section and the second scaffolding section.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein expanding the clot retrieval device includes expanding the clot retrieval device so that at least one of the first scaffolding section, the third scaffolding section, and the second scaffolding section deform at least a portion of the clot, the deformation forcing a portion of the clot through at least one of the first clot inlet mouth and the second clot inlet mouth into the clot reception space.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the outer body includes a distal capture net.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the first and second scaffolding sections of the outer body in the deployed configuration is between 2 and 18 times larger than a diameter of the first and second scaffolding sections of the outer body in the collapsed delivery configuration.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first scaffolding section and the second scaffolding section comprise a plurality struts in the form of closed cells.

8. A method of removing clot from a vessel, the method comprising:

delivering a clot retrieval device across the clot, wherein the clot retrieval device includes:

an inner body having a collapsed delivery configuration and an expanded deployed configuration; and

an outer body extending along a longitudinal axis and positioned at least partially about the inner body, wherein the outer body comprises

a first scaffolding section,

a second scaffolding section connected distal of the first scaffolding section by a hinged strut element, and

a clot inlet mouth between the first and second scaffolding section;

the first and second scaffolding sections of the outer body being expandable to a radial extent which is greater than the radial extent of the inner body in the deployed configuration to define a clot reception space between the inner body and the separate first and second scaffolding sections;

urging the clot in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the clot retrieval device so as to direct at least a portion of the clot through the clot inlet mouth into the clot reception space; and

inhibiting migration of the clot into the inner body to allow a flow of blood through the inner body in the expanded deployed configuration.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the outer body further includes a third scaffolding section positioned between the first scaffolding section and the second scaffolding section, wherein the third scaffolding is connected distal of the first scaffolding section by a second hinged strut element.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the clot inlet mouth is a first clot inlet mouth, the first clot inlet mouth being positioned between the first scaffolding section and the third scaffolding section, the outer body further defining a second clot inlet mouth positioned between the third scaffolding section and the second scaffolding section.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein urging the clot in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the clot retrieval device includes urging the clot in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the clot retrieval device so as to direct at least a portion of the clot through at least one of the first clot inlet mouth and the second clot inlet mouth into the clot reception space.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein a distal end of the outer body includes a distal capture net.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein urging the clot in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the clot retrieval device includes deforming the clot.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein a diameter of the first and second scaffolding sections of the outer body in the deployed configuration is between 2 and 18 times larger than a diameter of the first and second scaffolding sections of the outer body in the collapsed delivery configuration.

15. The method of claim 8 , wherein each of the first scaffolding section and second scaffolding section comprise a plurality struts in the form of closed cells.

16. A method of removing clot from a vessel, the method comprising:

delivering a clot retrieval device across the clot, wherein the clot retrieval device includes:

an inner body having a collapsed delivery configuration and an expanded deployed configuration; and

an outer body extending along a longitudinal axis and at least partially overlying the inner body, wherein the outer body comprises

a first scaffolding section,

a second scaffolding section connected distal of the first scaffolding section by a first hinged strut element,

a first clot inlet mouth between the first and second scaffolding sections;

a third scaffolding section connected distal of the second scaffolding section by a second hinged strut element,

a second clot inlet mouth between the second and third scaffolding sections;

the scaffolding sections of the outer body being expandable to a radial extent which is greater than the radial extent of the inner body in the deployed configuration to define a clot reception space between the inner body and the scaffolding sections;

expanding the clot retrieval device so that one or more of the first, third, and second scaffolding sections deform at least a portion of the clot, the deforming forcing a portion of the clot through at least one of the first and second clot inlet mouths into the clot reception space; and

inhibiting migration of the clot into the inner body to allow a flow of blood through the inner body in the expanded deployed configuration.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein a distal end of the outer body includes a distal capture net.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein a diameter of the first, second, and third scaffolding sections of the outer body in the deployed configuration is between 2 and 18 times larger than a diameter of the first, second, and third scaffolding sections of the outer body in the collapsed delivery configuration.
