Abstract

A system for mapping a multilayer network having a server layer and a client layer is provided. The system includes a framework configured for comparing information obtained from a first traffic counter of a client port to information obtained from a second traffic counter of a server port to thereby determine if the client port and the server port are linked.

Claims (43)

1. A system for mapping a multi-layer communication network having an optical layer and an internet protocol (IP) layer, the system comprising:

a first traffic counter located at a port of the optical layer;

a second traffic counter located at a port of the IP layer; and

a controller comprising a processor configured to execute instructions for:

receiving by the processor traffic data from the first traffic counter and the second traffic counter;

calculating by the processor a traffic pattern in the port of the optical layer and a traffic pattern in the port of the IP layer from the traffic data received from the first traffic counter and the second traffic counter;

comparing by the processor the traffic pattern in the port of the optical layer to the traffic pattern of the port of the IP layer;

calculating by the processor a match value from the compared traffic patterns representing a likelihood of a match between the optical layer port and the IP layer port indicative of connected ports; and

determining by the processor that the port of the optical layer and the port of the IP layer are connected when the match value exceeds a predefined threshold value.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein said traffic patterns are the traffic counts of said first and second counters over plural time periods.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein said comparing is by identifying a similar spike in said traffic patterns of said ports.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said traffic patterns are slopes of traffic data counts over said time period and said slopes are approximated by lines, obtained by using a minimum squares algorithm, having a minimum sum of distances from traffic data counts over said time period.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said comparing is by determining an averaged difference between traffic counts of said first traffic counter and said second traffic counter.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said processor is configured to execute instructions for identifying IP ports of a single link bundle that are routed through the same path of the optical layer and using said IP ports interchangeably to reroute traffic, wherein said IP ports have substantially the same capacity.

7. A system for mapping a multi-layer communication network having an optical layer and an internet protocol (IP) layer, the system comprising:

a first traffic counter located at a port of the optical layer;

a second traffic counter located at a port of the IP layer; and

a controller comprising a processor configured to execute instructions for:

receiving by the processor traffic data from the first traffic counter and the second traffic counter;

calculating by the processor a traffic pattern in the port of the optical layer and a traffic pattern in the port of the IP layer from the traffic data received from the first traffic counter and the second traffic counter;

comparing by the processor the traffic pattern in the port of the optical layer to the traffic pattern of the port of the IP layer;

calculating b the processor a match value from the compared traffic patterns representing a likelihood of a match between the optical layer port and the IP layer port indicative of connected ports;

determining by the processor that the port of the optical layer and the port of the IP layer are connected when the match value exceeds a predefined threshold value, and

identifying by the processor IP ports of a single link bundle that are routed through the same path of the optical layer.

8. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said traffic patterns are the traffic counts of said first and second counters over plural time periods.

9. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said comparing is by identifying a similar spike in said traffic patterns of said ports.

10. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said traffic patterns are slopes of traffic data counts over said time period and said slopes are approximated by lines, obtained by using a minimum squares algorithm, having a minimum sum of distances from traffic data counts over said time period.

11. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said comparing is by determining an averaged difference between traffic counts of said first traffic counter and said second traffic counter.

12. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said processor is configured to execute instructions for using said IP ports interchangeably to reroute traffic, wherein said IP ports have substantially the same capacity.

13. A system for mapping a multi-layer communication network having an optical layer and an internet protocol (IP) layer, the system comprising:

a first traffic counter located at a port of the optical layer;

a second traffic counter located at a port of the IP layer; and

a controller comprising a processor configured to execute instructions for:

receiving by the processor traffic data from the first traffic counter and the second traffic counter;

calculating by the processor a traffic pattern in the port of the optical layer and a traffic pattern in the port of the IP layer from the traffic data received from the first traffic counter and the second traffic counter;

comparing by the processor the traffic pattern in the port of the optical layer to the traffic pattern of the port of the IP layer;

calculating by the processor a match value from the compared traffic patterns representing a likelihood of a match between the optical layer port and the IP layer port indicative of connected ports;

determining by the processor that the port of the optical layer and the port of the IP layer are connected when the match value exceeds a predefined threshold value, and

identifying IP ports of a single link bundle that are routed through the same path of the optical layer and using said IP ports interchangeably to reroute traffic, wherein said IP ports have substantially the same capacity.

14. The system according to claim 13 , wherein said traffic patterns are the traffic counts of said first and second counters over plural time periods.

15. The system according to claim 13 , wherein said comparing is by identifying a similar spike in said traffic patterns of said ports.

16. The system according to claim 13 , wherein said traffic patterns are slopes of traffic data counts over said time period and said slopes are approximated by lines, obtained by using a minimum squares algorithm, having a minimum sum of distances from traffic data counts over said time period.

17. The system according to claim 13 , wherein said comparing is by determining an averaged difference between traffic counts of said first traffic counter and said second traffic counter.
