Abstract

A composite rim is used in spoked wheels, such as bicycle wheels. The composite rims has molded-in spoke holes. The composite rim is manufactured using a unique fabricating technique. The construction of the composite rim dramatically improves the bearing and loading strength of the composite rim over prior composite rims, which drill the spoke holes therein after fabrication of the rim hoop.

Claims (49)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a rim having

a plurality of spoke holes,

a polymer matrix,

at least one layer of reinforcement fibers aligned in a common orientation within the polymer matrix, and

wherein the reinforcement fibers immediately adjacent to the spoke holes bend away from the common orientation around the spoke holes to transfer load around the spoke holes.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the rim has an interior surface; and

the interior surface of the rim immediately adjacent and surrounding the spoke holes is generally concave.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising:

a plurality of spokes passing through the spoke holes;

a plurality of nipples, wherein each of the nipples is coupled to a corresponding one of the spokes; and

wherein the nipples have curved surfaces contacting the interior surface surrounding the spoke holes that is generally concave.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising:

a hub coupled to the spokes, wherein the spokes extend from the hub in a generally radial direction.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcement fibers immediately adjacent to the spoke holes are substantially continuous around the spoke holes.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the rim has a circumferential direction; and

the common orientation is in the circumferential direction of the rim.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the rim has a radial direction; and

the common orientation is in the radial direction of the rim.

8. An apparatus, comprising:

a rim having

a spoke hole,

a composite material having laminates of reinforcement fibers, and

wherein the reinforcement fibers immediately adjacent to the spoke hole are substantially unbroken around the spoke hole.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the reinforcement fibers immediately adjacent to the spoke hole is continuous around the spoke hole.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the reinforcement fibers immediately adjacent to the spoke holes bend around the spoke hole.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the reinforcement fibers extend in a common orientation; and

the reinforcement fibers immediately adjacent to the spoke hole deviate from the common orientation around the spoke hole.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein:

the rim has a circumferential direction; and

the common orientation is in the circumferential direction of the rim.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the reinforcement fibers immediately adjacent to the spoke hole is continuous in the circumferential direction of the rim.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein:

the rim has a radial direction; and

the common orientation is in the radial direction of the rim.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the reinforcement fibers immediately adjacent to the spoke hole is continuous in the radial direction of the rim.

16. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the rim has an interior surface; and

the interior surface of the rim immediately adjacent and surrounding the spoke hole is generally concave.

17. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising:

a bicycle wheel including

the rim,

a hub,

a spoke coupled to the hub, the spoke extending through the spoke hole, and

a nipple coupling the spoke to the rim.
