Abstract

A modular electrical connector with separately shielded signal conductor pairs. The connector may be assembled from modules, each containing a pair of signal conductors with surrounding partially or fully conductive material. Modules of different sizes may be assembled into wafers, which are then assembled into a connector. Wafers may include lossy material. In some embodiments, shielding members of two mating connectors may each have compliant members along their distal portions, such that, the shielding members engage at points of contact at multiple locations, some of which are adjacent the mating edge of each of the mating shielding members.

Claims (48)

1. A cable assembly comprising:

a plurality of modules held in a two dimensional array, each of the plurality of modules comprising:

a cable comprising

a first end and a second end,

two conductive elements extending from the first end to the second end, each conductive element being surrounded by a cable insulator component, and

a shield member holding together the two cable insulator components;

an insulative portion attached to the two conductive elements of the cable; and

a contact tail extending from the insulative portion and configured to make electrical connection to a circuit board, wherein the contact tail is attached to the at least one conductive element at the first end of the cable.

2. The cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cables of the plurality of modules are twinax cables.

3. The cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the insulative portion is at the first end of the cable.

4. The cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

the contact tails of the two conductive elements are positioned for edge coupling.

5. The cable assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a conductive structure at the first end of the cable, wherein the conductive structure surrounds at least a portion of the insulative portion, and the conductive structure is configured to make electrical connection to the circuit board.

6. The cable assembly of claim 5 , wherein:

the conductive structure is electrically coupled to the shield member holding together the two cable insulator components.

7. The cable assembly of claim 5 , further comprising:

a lossy member attached to the conductive structure.

8. The cable assembly of claim 1 , wherein the insulative portion is a first insulative portion, and each of the plurality of modules further comprises a second insulative portion at the second end of the cable.

9. The cable assembly of claim 8 , wherein the first insulative portion is at the first end of the cable, and each of the plurality of modules further comprises a mating contact portion held in the second insulative portion and attached to the at least one conductive element at the second end of the cable.

10. The cable assembly of claim 9 , wherein the mating contact portion comprises a tubular mating contact.

11. The cable assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a conductive structure at the second end of the cable, wherein the conductive structure surrounds at least a portion of the second insulative portion.

12. A cable assembly configured for connection to a circuit board, the cable assembly comprising:

a housing comprising a surface configured for mounting adjacent to the circuit board;

a plurality of cables supported by the housing, each cable of the plurality of cables comprising

conductive wires, the conductive wires being surrounded by a cable insulator, and

a shield member surrounding the cable insulator; and

a plurality of terminating components attached to conductive wires of the plurality of cables, wherein:

the plurality of terminating components extend through the mounting surface and are arranged in a two-dimensional array, and

the plurality of terminating components are configured to make electrical connection to the circuit board.

13. The cable assembly of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of cables are twinax cables.

14. The cable assembly of claim 12 , wherein the housing comprises a plurality of openings sized and arranged to receive modules comprising respective ones of the plurality of terminating components.

15. The cable assembly of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of cables extend from the housing in a direction perpendicular to the surface.

16. The cable assembly of claim 12 , wherein each of the plurality of cables further comprises a ground structure around the cable insulator.

17. An electrical connector, comprising:

a housing;

a mating interface comprising a first plurality of pairs of mating contacts and a second plurality of mating contacts supported by the housing,

a plurality of twinax cables comprising wires extending from a first end to a second end, wherein the first ends of the wires of the plurality of twinax cables are attached to the first plurality of mating contacts;

a plurality of first contact tails attached to the second ends of the wires of the plurality of twinax cables; and

wherein:

the second plurality of mating contacts are formed at first ends of a plurality of conductive elements;

the plurality of conductive elements have second ends; and

a plurality of second contact tails are formed at the second ends of the plurality of conductive elements.

18. The electrical connector of claim 17 , wherein:

the plurality of second contact tails are press fit contact tails.
