Abstract

Needle assemblies are generally discussed herein with particular discussions extended to needle assemblies having a tip protector with a plurality of wall surfaces for preventing contact with the needle tip from a side. Aspects of the tip protectors discussed herein include a first protector body having an arm for blocking a needle tip surrounded by a second protector body having a plurality of wall surfaces.

wherein the crimp, the material build up, the bend or the combinations thereof on the needle is configured to engage the perimeter defining the opening in a protective position in which the first arm free end extends across the lengthwise axis of the needle; and

wherein the third arm contacts the interior wall surface of the catheter hub and the tip protector is removably held in the cavity of the catheter hub in the ready to use position.

2. The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the third arm has a tab, a dimple, or a projection on a surface thereof.

3. The catheter assembly of claim 2 , wherein the tab, dimple, or projection on the surface of the third arm has an opening formed through a surface thereof.

4. The catheter assembly of claim 1 , further comprising two axially extending wall surfaces each having at least two edges and wherein the two axially extending wall surfaces are attached to the proximal wall of the tip protector.

5. The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the short arm has an apex biased against the interior wall surface of the catheter hub.

6. The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the tip protector further comprises a distal wall having an opening having the needle passing therethrough.

7. The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the third arm has smooth edges for contacting the interior wall surface of the catheter hub.

8. A catheter assembly comprising:

a catheter hub comprising a wall having an interior wall surface defining a cavity having a tip protector disposed therein;

a catheter tube having a distal opening extending distally of the catheter hub;

a needle, which has a lengthwise axis, a sharpened needle tip, and a crimp, a material build up, a bend or combinations thereof, passing through the catheter hub, the tip protector, and the catheter tube with the sharpened needle tip extending distally of the distal opening in a ready to use position;

the tip protector comprising a first arm, a second arm, and a third arm and each of the three arms having a structure with a fixed end that is fixed from moving and a free end that is movable and wherein the free ends of the three arms are independently movable relative to one another; wherein at least two of the arms are biased against the interior wall surface of the catheter hub to removably secure the tip protector in the cavity of the catheter hub in the ready to use position; the tip protector comprises a proximal wall and a perimeter defining an opening having the needle passing therethrough;

wherein the crimp, the material build up, the bend or the combinations thereof on the needle is configured to engage the perimeter defining the opening in a protective position in which the free end of at least one of the arms extends across the lengthwise axis of the needle;

wherein the free end of the third arm is located proximally of the fixed end of the third arm in both the ready to use position and the protective position; and

wherein at least one of the at least two arms that are biased against the interior wall surface of the catheter hub is the third arm.

9. The catheter assembly of claim 8 , wherein the at least two arms that are biased against the interior wall surface of the catheter hub have different arm lengths.

10. The catheter assembly of claim 8 , wherein the three arms have different arm lengths.

11. The catheter assembly of claim 8 , wherein each free end has an end edge.

12. The catheter assembly of claim 8 , wherein the at least two arms that are biased against the interior wall surface of the catheter hub are diametrically opposed.

13. The catheter assembly of claim 8 , further comprising two sidewalls attached to the proximal wall of the tip protector.

14. The catheter assembly of claim 8 , wherein the tip protector further comprises a distal wall having an opening having the needle passing therethrough.

15. The catheter assembly of claim 8 , wherein the free end of the first arm and the free end of the second arm are located distally of the proximal wall.

16. The catheter assembly of claim 8 , wherein a plane bisects the needle in two-halves, which includes a first half side and a second half side and wherein the at least two arms that are biased against the interior wall surface of the catheter hub are on the first half side of the needle.

17. A catheter assembly comprising:

a catheter hub comprising a wall having an interior wall surface defining a cavity;

a catheter tube having a distal opening extending distally of the catheter hub;

a needle, which has a lengthwise axis, a sharpened needle tip, and a crimp, a material build up, a bend or combinations thereof, passing through the catheter hub and the catheter tube with the sharpened needle tip extending distally of the distal opening in a ready to use position;
