Abstract

An intravascular catheter is provided, including a flexible elongate body; an expandable element positioned on the elongate body; a substantially linear thermal segment located proximally of the expandable element, the thermal segment defining a first flexibility, where the thermal segment is positioned between two portions of the catheter body each including a flexibility less than that of the thermal segment; a first fluid flow path in fluid communication with the expandable element; and a second fluid flow path in fluid communication with the thermal segment.

Claims (31)

1. A method of treating cardiac tissue, the method comprising:

positioning an expandable element of a medical device proximate a pulmonary vein and expanding the expandable element in the pulmonary vein to substantially occlude the pulmonary vein;

positioning a substantially linear thermal segment of the medical device proximate an atrial wall, the thermal segment being more flexible than at least one medical device segment adjacent to the thermal segment;

applying a compressive force from a proximal portion of the medical device to the thermal segment, the compressive force causing the thermal segment to deflect towards the atrial wall; and

circulating cryogenic fluid through a first fluid flow path in fluid communication with the expandable element to ablate the pulmonary vein.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying a compressive force includes applying an axial force in a distal direction along a longitudinal axis of the medical device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substantially linear thermal segment is a non-expandable thermal segment.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one medical device segment adjacent to the thermal segment includes a first medical device segment proximal to the thermal segment and a second medical device segment distal to the thermal segment.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the second medical device segment is between the thermal segment and the expandable element.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the medical device includes an elongate body having a longitudinal axis, a first transverse wall within the elongate body between the first medical device segment and the thermal segment, and a second transverse wall within the elongate body between the second medical device segment and the thermal segment, each of the first transverse wall and the second transverse wall lying in a plane that is substantially orthogonal to the elongate body longitudinal axis.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the medical device further includes a first fluid flow path in fluid communication with the expandable element and a second fluid flow path in fluid communication with the thermal segment.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first fluid flow path is operable independently from the second fluid flow path.

9. A method of treating cardiac tissue, the method comprising:

positioning an expandable first thermally transmissive region of a medical device proximate a pulmonary vein, the medical device including an elongate body;

positioning a non-expandable second thermally transmissive region of the medical device proximate an atrial wall, the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region including a first deflection profile and being disposed between a first adjacent medical device body segment and a second adjacent medical device body segment, each of the first and second adjacent medical device body segment including a deflection profile different from the first deflection profile, the first adjacent medical device body segment being between the expandable first thermally transmissive region and the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region;

applying a compressive force from a proximal portion of the medical device to the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region, such that the compressive force causes the thermal segment to deflect toward and come into contact with the atrial wall;

circulating cryogenic fluid through a first fluid flow path in fluid communication with the expandable first thermally transmissive region to ablate a portion of the pulmonary vein; and

circulating cryogenic fluid through a second fluid flow path in fluid communication with the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region to ablate a portion of the atrial wall, the first fluid flow path and the second fluid flow path being fluidly isolated from each other.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the elongate body of the medical device includes a longitudinal axis, the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region including a linear thermal segment that is coaxial with the elongate body longitudinal axis.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region is more flexible than each of the first and second adjacent medical device body segments.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the medical device further includes a radiopaque marker positioned at a boundary between the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region and one of the first and second adjacent medical device body segments.

13. A method of treating cardiac tissue, the method comprising:

positioning an expandable first thermally transmissive region of a medical device proximate a pulmonary vein, the medical device including an elongate body having a proximal portion, a distal portion, and a longitudinal axis;

positioning a non-expandable second thermally transmissive region of the medical device proximate an atrial wall, the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region including a first deflection profile and being disposed between a first adjacent medical device body segment and a second adjacent medical device body segment, each of the first and second adjacent medical device body segment including a deflection profile different from the first deflection profile, the first adjacent medical device body segment being between the expandable first thermally transmissive region and the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region, the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region, the first adjacent medical device body segment, and the second adjacent medical device body segment together having a continuous fixed diameter;

applying a compressive force from a proximal portion of the medical device to the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region, such that the compressive force causes the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region to deflect toward and come into contact with the atrial wall;

circulating cryogenic fluid through a first fluid flow path in fluid communication with the expandable first thermally transmissive region to ablate a portion of the pulmonary vein; and

circulating cryogenic fluid through a second fluid flow path in fluid communication with the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region to ablate a portion of the atrial wall, the medical device further including a first transverse wall within the elongate body between the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region and the first adjacent medical device body segment and a second transverse wall within the elongate body between the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region and the second adjacent medical device body segment, each of the first transverse wall and the second transverse wall lying in a plane that is substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal axis, the first transverse wall preventing a flow of fluid dispersed within the non-expandable second thermally transmissive region to the expandable first thermally transmissive region.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first and second fluid flow paths being fluidly isolated from each other.
