Abstract

A bin monitoring system functions both as a device for lifting the bin and as a weighing system for monitoring or measuring the level of feed or other product in a bin. Various embodiments and methods of retrofitting the bin monitoring system to existing bins are provided. Further, the accuracy provided by various embodiments enables one to accurately predict when the bin will be empty. Thus, a feed mill, for example, can be aware of anticipated needs days in advance, allowing the feed mill to better optimize its scheduling and deliveries.

Claims (30)

1. A monitoring system useable with an object having a weight and a leg that supports the object above a foundation, the monitoring system comprising:

a frame configured to be securable to the foundation;

a load cell interconnected to the frame;

a threaded bolt adjustably positioned with respect to and interconnected to the frame;

a mechanical connector that is interconnected to the frame and can be secured to the leg; and

a first plate arranged and configured to be positioned against a first side of the leg;

wherein the monitoring system is configured such that tightening the threaded bolt via rotation of the threaded bolt correspondingly lifts the leg and applies a load of the leg to the load cell.

2. The monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein an upper end of the load cell is moveably mounted to the frame with the threaded bolt to allow the load cell to be raised and lowered relative to the frame when the threaded bolt is rotated.

3. The monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring system is configured to apply the object weight to a lower end of the load cell.

4. The monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein at least part of the threaded bolt is positioned above the mechanical connector.

5. The monitoring system of claim 1 , further comprising a second plate configured to be positioned against a second side of the leg.

6. The monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the first plate includes a plurality of apertures through which fasteners can be positioned.

7. The monitoring system of claim 6 , wherein the mechanical connector includes a plurality of apertures that can be aligned with the plurality of apertures of the first plate.

8. The monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the mechanical connector has a planar surface arranged for abutting against the leg and the first plate is oriented parallel to the planar surface.

9. The monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the mechanical connector and the threaded bolt are aligned along a common axis.

10. A monitoring system useable with an object having a weight and a leg that supports the object above a foundation, the monitoring system comprising:

a frame configured to be securable to the foundation;

a load cell interconnected to the frame;

a threaded bolt adjustably positioned with respect to and interconnected to the frame;

a mechanical connector that is interconnected to the frame and can be secured to the leg;

wherein the mechanical connector and the threaded bolt are aligned along a common axis; and

wherein the monitoring system is configured such that tightening the threaded bolt via rotation of the threaded bolt correspondingly lifts the leg and applies a load of the leg to the load cell.

11. The monitoring system of claim 10 , wherein an upper end of the load cell is moveably mounted to the frame with the threaded bolt to allow the load cell to be raised and lowered relative to the frame when the threaded bolt is rotated.

12. The monitoring system of claim 10 , wherein the monitoring system is configured to apply the object weight to a lower end of the load cell.

13. The monitoring system of claim 10 , wherein at least part of the threaded bolt is positioned above the mechanical connector.

14. The monitoring system of claim 10 , further comprising a first plate arranged and configured to be positioned against a first side of the leg.

15. The monitoring system of claim 14 , further comprising a second plate configured to be positioned against a second side of the leg.

16. The monitoring system of claim 14 , wherein the first plate includes a plurality of apertures through which fasteners can be positioned.

17. The monitoring system of claim 16 , wherein the mechanical connector includes a planar surface and a plurality of apertures in the planar surface that can be aligned with the plurality of apertures of the first plate.

18. The monitoring system of claim 17 , wherein the first plate is oriented parallel to the planar surface.
