Abstract

A training method and apparatus are disclosed. The training method may include converting a firearm capable of firing live ammunition to a pneumatic training device incapable of firing live ammunition. The training method may further include cycling a pneumatic training device through one or more cycles. Each of the cycles may simulate an actual firing of the firearm. Each of the cycles may also include triggering a trigger assembly of the pneumatic training device, using a charge of a pressurized gas to reset the trigger assembly, and advancing a counter of the pneumatic training device. After a certain number of cycles have been completed, a next cycle may be attempted, but not completed. Accordingly, the training method may enable a user to safely and realistically practice reloading, jam or malfunction clearing, or the like.

Claims (43)

1. A training method comprising:

cycling a pneumatic training device through one or more cycles, each of the one or more cycles comprising

triggering a trigger assembly of the pneumatic training device,

using a charge of a pressurized gas to reset the trigger assembly and cycle a bolt of the pneumatic training device, and

advancing a counter of the pneumatic training device, wherein the counter comprises a rocker and a toothed wheel and the advancing comprises (1) the bolt contacting and pivoting the rocker and (2) the rocker rotating the toothed wheel one increment; and

preventing, by the counter after the toothed wheel has been rotated a selected amount, the pneumatic training device from returning to a ready-to-fire condition.

2. The training method of claim 1 , wherein the preventing comprises mechanically blocking the bolt of the pneumatic training device from returning to battery.

3. The training method of claim 1 , wherein:

the pneumatic training device comprises a slide and frame of a handgun; and

the slide of the handgun forms the bolt of the pneumatic training device.

4. The training method of claim 3 , wherein:

the pneumatic training device comprises a magazine well and a magazine assembly positioned within the magazine well; and

the counter forms part of the magazine assembly.

5. The training method of claim 4 , wherein:

a size of the magazine assembly substantially matches the size of a conventional magazine corresponding to the handgun; and

the number of cycles within the one or more cycles is equal to a number of rounds stored within the conventional magazine.

6. The training method of claim 4 , wherein the magazine assembly further comprises a container containing a pressurized fluid.

7. The training method of claim 6 , wherein the pneumatic training device further comprises an actuator assembly occupying a space within the slide previously occupied by a barrel of the handgun.

8. The training method of claim 7 , wherein each cycle of the one or more cycles comprises passing the charge of the pressurized gas from the container to the actuator assembly.

9. The training method of claim 8 , wherein the using comprises using, by the actuator assembly, the charge of the pressurized gas to reset the trigger assembly.

10. The training method of claim 1 , wherein:

the pneumatic training device comprises a magazine well and a magazine assembly positioned with the magazine well; and

the preventing comprises releasing the magazine assembly from a fully seated position within the magazine well.

11. The training method of claim 10 , wherein the releasing vents a charge of a pressurized gas from the pneumatic training device.

12. The training method of claim 11 , further comprising returning the pneumatic training device to battery by executing a tap and rack drill.

13. A training device simulating selected functionality of a firearm, the device comprising:

parts of a firearm, the parts comprising (1) a frame comprising a trigger assembly and a magazine well and (2) a bolt selectively cycling with respect to the frame;

a magazine assembly secured within the magazine well;

the magazine assembly having a counter comprising a rocker (1) positioned so as to be contacted by the bolt during the cycling and (2) mounted so as to pivot from a first position to a second position and back to the first position with each cycle of the cycling;

the magazine assembly wherein the counter further comprises a toothed wheel positioned and rotatably mounted proximate the rocker such that pivoting of the rocker from the first position to the second position and back to the first position induces one increment of rotation of the toothed wheel; and

the magazine assembly wherein the counter further comprises a lock that is released after a particular number of increments of rotation have been induced in the toothed wheel, the lock, while released, preventing the training device from returning to a ready-to-fire condition.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the lock selectively moves between a fixed position and a released position.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the counter further comprises a biasing member biasing the lock toward the released position.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the lock in the released position mechanically blocks the bolt from returning to battery.

17. The device of claim 13 , wherein:

the firearm is a handgun; and

the slide of the handgun forms the bolt.

18. The device of claim 13 , wherein the particular number of increments of rotation is equal to a number of rounds stored within a conventional magazine corresponding to the firearm.

19. The device of claim 13 , wherein:

the frame comprises a magazine release;

the magazine assembly comprises an indentation into which the magazine release extends; and

the lock forms at least one boundary of the indentation.

20. The device of claim 19 , wherein lock, when released, moves the at least one boundary in a manner that enlarges the indentation.
